  • Just returned from my run and I'm appear to to be getting back to where I was before the injury, in order to avoid running the hills I drove to Charlton park, where I walked a a circuit to warm up, followed by running 10 cicuits a fellow sufferer at the end told me .9 of a mile = 1 circuit according to this gismo thingy (It looked like a wrist watch), if thats correct then I'm roughly back to where I was :-)
  • i have had the lurgy this week and havent been out once, really want to get out tonight but will probably do more harm than good. Hopefully get out on Sunday
  • Planning to do one sunday as well
  • yep with Smudge
  • I just planned out a route on www.mapmyrun.com and I was shocked to see distance which I thought would be a good 7/8 miles was only 2.5!

I'm going on Sunday as well.
  • i shalld o sunday. cant do my long run saturday as will wreck my day. Got a 4.30pm erotic dance class tomorrow so need to be in good shape for it.
  • what if you injure yourself getting carried away with the exotic dancing and it puts you off your stride for your run on sunday?

[cite]Posted By: Curb_It[/cite]. Got a 4.30pm erotic dance class tomorrow

    WHERE ?
  • Top secret.

no chance of me getting carried away suzi... more like a "hurly burly" dance from me as opposed to Burlesque..
  • I dont know if its just me, my motivation is wavering somewhat at the mo...
I've gone from running 25-30 miles a week for 2 months to only one 6 mile run this week and feeling like sh1te :-(

  • Well after a 10 day spurt of 35 miles I too got a bit a virus infection. That plus a glorious Bank Hol weekend in Utrecht meant that I did not run again until this morning (14 days) . So today my goal was to go for 90 mins along the Brampton Valley Way infact I comfortably managed 100 mins and 11 miles. Whilst my CV and breathing is fine the legs were starting to tire but I am now very positive that I will be able to complete the 13 miles. My plan is to do 7 mile Wednesday and then the same again next Saturday. Must remember fluids the day before especially.
  • after a week off I did approx. 12miles yesterday in about 93mins over some pretty evil hills (one at the start alongside the A2 and one at the end near to Bluewater). Felt hard work throughout although the humidity didn't help. Was a run of reminiscence covering a few areas I used to frequent when I was a kid. Only 5 weeks left now. how many of you looking forward to it?

My tip this week is if you are going to buy new kit to run in on the day then do it in the next week or two. Any nearer the event than that and you are risking chafing and blister hell.
  • any recommendations on what to wear? i need to go and buy my kit.

I didnt do any this weekend at all as my run last weekend wrecked my day.

will do a couple of small ones this week.
  • t-shirt wise, go for a technical fabric. Seams should not rub too much and will not weigh down with sweat like a standard cotton t-shirt should. Essentially go with something you feel comfortable with and also make sure you have done a few runs in whatever you are going to wear beforehand.

Secondly chafing is bad, make vaseline or equivalent your friend. Sudocrem (those with young kids will probably have some) works much better for avoiding painful parts
  • Did my longest run / walk to date on sat evening, just logged it on mapmyrun and pleasantly surprised to find it to be 6.4 Miles.

Took 75 Mins, but pleased to get the mileage under my belt.

Hope to add a mile or 2 more at the weekend.
  • Managed my second 10 miler tonight in just under 2 hours, not fast by any means but hey...

Now for the experts out there, I've got a question regarding the timing of our training. I find when I go out for a run early morning or anytime up to lunchtime then I can be well and truly fcuked after 3-4 miles and feel like I've run a marathon by the time I hit the 5/6 mile mark. If I go out as soon as I get home from work, I struggle but not as badly. If I have dinner as soon as I get in then give it 90 mins or so then I can run 10 miles without not even a struggle.

It's pretty obvious I need to get some fuel in the system for the training - but what would the plan be for race day? Get up at 6am and eat a full meal then eat something else around 8am assuming around 90 mins to digest for the start of the run (what time does it actually start? anyone know?)

I'm a bit worried that if I dont eat I'll die before I even reach half-way...
  • You are right that the problem is lack of fuel. Personally I do my long runs in the morning and tend to eat something (a bowl of cereal usually) about 2 hours before. Along with a cup of strong black coffee. The coffee helps promote a bit of a clear out down below and the food keeps me going during the run.

One suggestion I have heard is to have a banana or something similar about an hour before bed to keep your energy levels topped up. This was more aimed at those who get up and do a workout pretty much straight away.

One thing you could try is taking a handful of jelly beans out with you on your earlier runs and taking one every 10-15 minutes during the run to keep energy levels topped up.

I will dig out some advice on eating strategies for the week leading up to the race in the next week or two to give people a few pointers.
  • I did 7 miles in 58 mins last night and "touch wood" the new trainers have stopped the painfull shins. i cant remember who previously mentioned the alphabet stretching but i do this before every run now and it seems to help.
Good advice about food above,is it equaly important to eat something straight after a run ? (banana etc) as i find i am starving afterwards but do not eat anything until i have showered and cooked dinner (30 mins)
  • alphabet stretching ?
  • Im going to get some of those little glucose sachets i've seen about. ian took them during his endurance test. Give you a little kick along the way but yes would be very interested in what to eat before etc.

im slacking at the moment. need to get back into it.

  • i'm sure it was someone on here who told me about alphabet stretching - its simple but effective at reducing shin pains. Sit on a chair and right the letters of the alphabet with your feet!! sounds mad but it really does work.
  • I dunno about the other footballers on here, but i thought all this running training would have kept me quite fit. Did some football training last night (Basically just sprinting & doggies), was shattered after about 30 minutes, first game this Sunday as well, just pleased it's vets.

Regarding the eating habits, no way could I eat before going out running each evening although I eat by much about 2.30pm & run at about 6.00pm so that probably helps. I take my Lucozade drink with me when I run now as remembering to take on enough fluids seem to be my main problem.
  • After sunday's run which I managed to do 11.5 plus 1 walking circuits of Charlton Park, tonight I thought a gentle pace around the park and do maybe 4/5 miles, It turned into bloody hard work running against the wind on one side even harder to keep a slow pace on the other, but I completed 6 miles which I'm well pleased with. I take it that the meet up for a run together prior to the 5th will not happen? as it's getting very close, although the full course has still to be announced, I enjoy reading all the tips and how others are progressing but as said before the motivation to get off my ar5e is wearing thin, Mrs T.C.E helps by doing a healthy dinners on run nights:-(
  • Big turning point for me tonight.

Got the train with Johnboy and mentioned i was close to packing it in. Last run was last Friday, had to stop at less than a mile and could only stretch it out for just over 2 miles total.

Went out tonight with no expectations, and managed to bash out 6.7 miles in 70 minutes (with a stretch and walk after 4 miles). Huge move up for me, had only managed past 3.5 miles on one occasion previously. there was a 30 second spell in the middle where i was actually enjoying myself

Of course, i can barely walk now ! Still not convinced i'm going to make it, i still have to effectively double it in 4 weeks and have a holiday in the middle of that, but its given me a renewed bit of hope.

Ps. Been running in the Charlton 1991 'leisure shirt' - the red white and black modern art monstrosity. Amazing the weird looks it gets !!
  • I found that as well AFKA, for no apparent reason I find somewhere during the run I'm also enjoying myself !!! I devised a playlist of music some to my taste, some others have suggested, but all are up beat, including that "rocky" theme music which is surprisingly motivational, as I run past the Meridian astro pitches tonight a couple of lads were chatting before getting in their cars, and as I passed one shouted "why are you jogging in a swimming hat" (at least if he was going take the pi55, he was original) and it made me smile, but the best was yet to come on my next lap they were still chatting, one of them saw me coming I've never seen a clio being loaded with 4 people and luggage that quickly. Lol
  • its amazing the difference is when you run with someone as opposed to alone. Im hoping the music and atmosphere will uplift me to get round as i think it will for a few of us.

It might be worth grouping together during the run with others off here who are likely to be going at the same sort of pace, as it is certainly easier running with others.
  • quite strange, run last night with a cold water bottle i'd had in the fridge, yet 17 hours on, my fingers are still tingling !
  • sounds like a good idea, anyone aiming to run a mile an hour pace ??
  • Have just checked my Training schedule as of last night since I started training on 4th March I have :-
