My 3rd run after my enforced lay off, last monday I managed 1.5 miles before collapsing in heap, wednesday it was 2.5 and the same result, the weekend was a beer enforced washout, today after reading some of what you folk have been running and in what times I decided to push it again to see what I was capable of, I managed 4.5 miles including shootershill at the end of the run, and I took a leaf out Latimers book and watched my breathing pattern, regular as clockwork, IN THOROUGH MY MOUTH AND OUT THOROUGH MY AR%E. ;-) all in 50 something minutes, my offical timekeeper was having a bath!!!
Been out again today, and I'm having to walk after just a few minutes of jogging. Same leg, same problem, despite giving it a rest and doing loads of pre-exercise stretching. Not happy.
anyone else got any injury problems? i am getting relly bad pains in my right shin (shinsplints?) have played footy for the last 30 years and never had a problem, getting new trainers this week hopefully that will help.
i have a problem everytime i run on a downhill section i get a shooting pain in my little toe everytime i put pressure down with my left foot. Feels like a nerve thing, and when i press around afterwards its the part on the sole just before the sole that is tender.
Other than that, my main problem is recovery. My muscles simply ache for days afterwards.
I got thrown off track and didn't run for 6 weeks. Started again last week and did 3 miles on Wednesday, but it took everything out my legs. When i went out again on Sunday i had to stop after 0.7 miles and walk home because my legs were completely empty.
Last night i did my best run yet, 3.5 miles and felt really pleased afterwards even though it took me 40 minutes, and got overtook by a 6 stone woman wearing a rucksack, and realising i'm dragging myself round rather than actually running.
The realisation though that there are just 51 days left, realistically 13/14 training runs left in me allowing for rest, and i need to add an extra 10 miles into those 14 runs soon fears me with dread.
I had my longest break in four months training from last Thursday till last night six days off in total to concentrate on Drinking & Smoking. Went out last night & did 8 miles in 64 minutes, could have gone longer but started to feel a twinge in groin & I have a Football match Sunday so decided to leave it at that. I am telling you guys do some Core Stability exercises, it will assist in your running, well it has mine anyway.
AFKA, I had the same problem about six months ago when I tried to start running again after almost a 2 year break. After a couple of weeks, it gets easier and easier. Just make sure you stretch properly before and afterwards. I always find that I get a lot of aches if I dont drink enough water. I almost force myself to drink 2 or 3 pints of water beforehand, take a small bottle of water with me for the run itself and then drink 2 or 3 pints as soon as I get back.
Was talking to Bungle last night and he wants to start coming out running with me a couple of times a week to get in shape for the RTTB. If you want to come with us, you are more than welcome.
There's absolutely no shame in running 11 min/mile pace - thats good given your lack of training.
the problem with your foot had plagued me for years, it kept me out of running for a long time. I still get it now and again. I never found any particular cause (had x-rays etc to try and diagnose it) but found they when it occurred a couple of days of no running solved it. I eventually put it down to being a bit heavier than I should be, as when I started running again properly and dropped a pound or two the problem seemed to ease off a fair bit. Which is no help to you at all I realise.
Personally I have done nothing since Sunday as I started a new job this week and am struggling for time, but should be back on the case tomorrow.
The key thing with those of you behind a bit on training is to slow the pace down or even alternate run/walk on your training days and get some mileage in. Instead of running three miles and feeling like crap for the rest of the week. Run two and walk two alternately, you get some more mileage down but will still be able to do some more a day or two later.
Apparently not. I had months of physio, and then various tests, before I went under the knife for it. Thought it was sorted (managed to run around ok for the charity match at the Valley) but since I've been trying to run on the roads, it's flared up again. Bl00dy annoying
Sorry if I appear to to be gloating, I`m not, but mapping my progress on here makes try that bit harder each time I go for my run. This evening I wanted to pack it in after less than a mile but for what ever reason decided to continue, before I knew it I was on Blackheath!! round the back of the church and home again, just used "map my run" to find a total of 7.70 miles in approximately 80 minutes, after a 5/6 week lay off I`m well pleased.
Done a 10k run tuesday,on a gradient of 2.5% in the gym followed by 20 lengths in the pool, run took 62mins,however when we do this i am just going to do it at a slow pace as our aim is just to do it.
Nice progress TCE and Tavern. Medders, i had a chat with a physio last night and she said bad running shoes MAY add to shin splint problems, so fingers crossed my new ones help. Did you have an operation for this problem?
Glass - yes mate, look up 'compartment syndrome'. Things seemed to get better after the op but now I'm back to square one. I only had the front compartments released, so looks like I may need the others done too. Got measured out for shoes and explained the issue to the fitter, but the problem hasnt got any better with them. Fingers crossed they do the trick for you though
I managed my first 10 miler last night in 12 min/mile pace and finished in a fraction over 2 hours. Absolutely chuffed to bits that I managed it and feel confident now that I'll be able to to complete this half-marathon in 50 days time or so in under 2 hrs 40 lol (I hope!)
Unsurprisingly the legs were a little stiff this morning but were fine after a long hot soak in the tub.
Off to chill at Lords to watch the FP Trophy Final now with a few beers. From the healthy to the not so healthy.
(BTW - I've solved the blistering problem. Under my twin skin socks, I've been applying a few plasters then literally wrapping my feet in zinc oxide tape. Not at all pleasant when removing the tape at the end of the run but its definitely stopping the blisters!)
If anyone is interested in the route I took, check out: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-kingdom/bexley/580772796520
Another tip to avoid blisters is to use petroleum jelly/vaseline or equivalent, try also a bit of talcum powder in your socks to - that absorbs some moisture.
Went out again this morning at "silly oclock" and things were looking good for my best ever, distance wise. I have just "mapped my run" to find that on exactly 8 miles I just stopped, I walked for some 100 yards and tried again but nothing! absolutely fecked, I ended up walking some 2.5 miles home, I`m hoping its a motivational thing rather than a stamina thing but we`ll see next time out.
TCE you have not been back running after your injury for that long. 8 miles is fine and even the 2.5 mile walking will help. You did just over 10 miles, and you probably did nearer 11 because mapmyrun does tend to under-estimate distance. Basically with a bit of walking you do around 80% of the distance and there is 7 weeks before the race. You should be fine.
Personally I did about 12miles today, a bit further than anticipated but was a good run. Most of it along the banks of the thames past the pictueresque container depot, the artistic power station, and finally the fragrant sewage works. All good fun and the off-road stuff gives the joints a bit more of a workout. Don't feel too bad, a bit stiff but pretty much okay. Was quite nice listening to the brits doing us proud in Beijing whilst out running.
Hope everyone else is training okay, should get all the details of the half marathon itself through in another three weeks. I am looking forward to it. My tip today is a mental one.
Enjoy it. Not an easy one I am sure, especially when you have been on your feet for 40minutes and know you have the same again at least to go, but look at you surroundings, it's surpirsing how much more you see even in the crappiest of areas when you are running when compared to driving. Today I saw so damned large rats out near littlebrook power station and nearly trod on an indecisive bunny. You don't get that on your daily commute.
mapped my run for tonight, 5.2 miles, which is nearly 2 miles longer than i've covered before. Pretty sure i'm going to have a walk a bit, but i need to start getting mileage under my belt now.
Strangely, i feel quite nervous, and have done before most of my runs. Not sure whether its because there is an actual goal at the end of all this and its coming around fast, or i would be the same if i was just 'running for fun', but i find i'm constantly analysing my breathing, pains in my legs, feet etc.

This is one of the reasons I have been posting my progress or lack of it on here AFKA, it encourages me to persevere with it or I would have packed it in long ago, the injury to my foot was something I would have used as the excuse I needed to stop, but one things for sure once I have got my ar5e in gear and done the session its a great buzz, I can only imagine the sense of achievement those guys get when they finish a marathon.
great point T.C.E , hearing how you guys are getting on on this thread keeps me going. bang on about feeling great after you have run and i too cant wait to hopefully complete the half marathon. i am sure we are all going to be fine on the day and will joke about the training during our post run booze marathon!!!
Haven't run for 3 weeks due to back problem. Did 4 k on treadmill today and nearly died. Won't give up tho, 7 weeks to go, will muddle through and up the mileage every couple of days to try and get up to 9/ 10 miles a week or 2 before.
I did 5.2 in 54 mins. Had to stop twice though, at first before i'd even completed a mile, then again at 2 miles. Nearly jacked it in there as i was right near home, but kept going and glad i did. Did the last 3 and bit without stopping.
Breathing has been fine throughout, i just get pains and tightness as soon as 400yds into a run, which i have no choice but to stop and walk off.
Its amazing in an hour the not just physical, but phychological roller-coaster i go through. At what stage does this become enjoyable ?
Anyway, i've got a bit more mileage under my belt which i'm pleased with, but i really feel as if i'm pushing my (clearly knackered) body to its physical limits.

But just run 4 miles on the tread and felt okay.
But before the half marathon i have two weddings, a weeks holiday and a 40th birthday party... not exactly helpful.
god how boring is ipswich game going to be.

Same as me mate. Bloody kills. Not something you can run off either.

and there is no way of stretching it out either
