My update is that I have completed five 7 milers since 13th August and plan to go for another one tonight. My breathing and CV system are coping well but am finding that I have 'lead legs' at times in the run. Any suggestions about gym leg conditioning work would be welcome. I will continue doing three 7 milers a week for the next two weeks then step up to some 10 milers.
My fitness is definitely improving though, no where my best 10 miles in 76 mins, but I am doing 7 miles in about 56 mins so a result around 2 hours for the race is my target.
I understand that a lot of runners walk for a mile at a brisk pace prior to a long run so as to get the body warmed up this has been a benefit to me esp. when doing 10 miles plus
Keep going everyone good to read of your inspirational efforts
The idea of the warm up mile beforehand is a sensible one. There is less need for lots of stretching at the pace most of us are running at (unless the weather is particularly cold), but warming up a little beforehand will almost certainly help.
I tend to do a couple of miles with my son before my long runs, this tends to be at around 9min mile pace, and after a quick drink of water I am ready to hit the roads properly. It helps loosen up and avoids those aches and gripes when you first start running.
The other alternative is to take the first 5-10mins very easy when starting to ease yourself into it.
I did my first ten miler last night, went round in 78 mins but made the huge mistake of not taking out any water. Felt sick afterwards & only after some energy drinks & dinner later that evening started to feel a bit better. Also got cramp in bed for the first time last night which interrupted my sleep on more than one occasion. Will be taking the water bottle out in future !
As someone who left applying too late ( they would not accept the maestro card on the site for some reason) I am technically out of the race, unless I can somehow race unofficially. But what I am doing is I'm going to get all the kids at my school involved in a challenge to run 500+ miles between us with me running round the school field to the the tune of 13 miles. The joy in their little faces as a teacher slowly collapses will be a sight to behold :) I'm going to set a target of a £1000 sponsorship from all the kids for The Demelza appeal. I'm really disappointed I can't do the race with all of you on here, but at least this way I can contribute something and it will also hopefully get some primary kids a bit fitter. And my training is s l o w l y progressing.
Not sure Curb it we will have to measure it out, it will part of a cross curricular maths activity, ha ha well for our site administrator anyway :) Reckon it is about 350- 400 metres all the way round
Well I was all pleased to hear that I will now be able to take part in the race and that is sorted. :) But then I realised that I'm also doing it at school with the kids, so now I'm doing it TWICE.
WHOSE STUPID IDEA WAS THAT!!!
Oh well ;) it's a good cause and at least I will be fit at the end of it. Sort of. Or more likely fit for nothing eh. I'm looking forward to it tho, should be a good day :)
Curb it can you give me more details on the riverfront route please for saturday morning , as the lads want to be stationed at various points to give you some err encouragement
6 weeks left now. Did a slightly shorter 9 1/2 miles today as i had left my proper insoles in the office and my calves felt quite tight. In the end felt very good and covered the route in just under 69mins. All felt great. It was pissing down and points and very windy, but was very impressed.
It will be an easy week this week as I am off to Disneyland Paris for a few days with the wife and kids. Weather is looking good for next week. So I hope you all get some good training runs in.
Tip today is to always be prepared to be surprised by your runs. Today I really didn't fancy it. I felt stiff, didn't have my proper insoles so was paranoid about injury. Went off slow and found myself feeling great after about 20minutes and did the fastest run since I was in my early twenties.
no you wouldnt have seen me. i was back home by 10.25am. the pub werent open.
I ran 8 miles and got home and took to my bed as i felt sick and had the shakes (and no i had stayed in the night before).
mind you i managed a few down the pub later but still felt delirious.
i wont be doing any drinks after this run as its all i can do to stop myself from passing out when ive finished. i've not done anything since as have a cold.

Whisper / email / call / text / carrier pigeon me
You can also by way of support stand by the side of the road screaming RED ARMY, and come for a beer afterwards !
Where's the after sherbert taking place then?
Me and AFKA are going to have ameeting in the pub next week to iron out all the details.
Still good to read everyone's stories on this page though - as well as the encouragement from people who are not even racing.
I'm doing a long riverfront run saturday morning and hope to be passed the oak by 11am else i could be crucified by shag.
But then I realised that I'm also doing it at school with the kids, so now I'm doing it TWICE.
