Like everyone else, absolutely glowing after that.

Everyone's covered pretty much everything, except for the one thing that gave me a pang of disappointment. The attendance. After all the noise from the club during the midweek, I was expecting 23k maybe 24k. As was Brownie, btw, and he's part of the club.

There were less Charlton fans there today than for the Burton game.

I remember @Airman Brown would mention that opening fixtures suffer a bit from people being on holiday. But it was a bit of an anti-climatic note to hear at the end of a great day in every other way.

Not sure what we can do about it, other than spread the word.

The season opener has got earlier iver the years.  Yesterday i wwnt to a gym class in the morning where there are normally 25 people all year round, there were 6.

We had our family holiday warly this year but most years we wouldnt make a 9th august game.

Both the season ticket attenders (counted in the total given but still empty seats) and the non-season ticket purchases will have significantly affected and i think the crowd was, given the date in august, very strong.
The season used to start later but we’ve had a July 31st start and very early starts for many years now. L1 and L2 kicked off on August 2nd. Other things being equal we tend to get better crowds in early August than later. Gym classes are available all year round, I assume, and don’t have novelty or rarity value. Take up won’t be related to weather or euphoria.

It was pretty clear that sales stalled for this game after a very positive beginning. I think that’s about price as much as anything, and £35 on the day is a hefty amount for a less committed fan. Hardly a disaster, but the club probably sold about 6,000 home match tickets. Perhaps they would have sold closer to 10,000 if they hadn’t overcooked the pricing?
The point i was making was that the second weekend in august there are a large number of people on holiday not one specific to gym classes but as you know using that as an example for how many people who would normally consider attending a game would not be available to do so.

i do agree with you that the price point is probably too high to maximise revenue. I would rather sell out at a lower price than have seats available at a higher one.
It sounds seductively simple and is the most basic calculation facing any business. Marketing text books are full of case studies showing how it didnt work out,  although in many cases, there were just other things that needed to be done to make the price cut effective. Two obvious things at Charlton would be
    - do “lapsed” fans hear about the price cut?
    - is it as easy as possible to buy a ticket? ( there’s a thread running on exactly this topic)
    -  can they get there as easilyas they recall in the old days?

but first you need to be reasonably sure its the main reason that puts people off. I gave up years ago trying to persuade the club to do the market research that would shed light on that. But I woůld assume they take a look at what other clubs are charging. If Boro and Stoke are overall charging 10% or so less, then that might be a good indicator.

But yeah´ getting off topic. It was good to see a pretty full Valley, trouble is on TV you mainly get to see the West Stand I have a completely irrational dislike of the West Stand

I think that there is some good points made here, there is also the issue of expectation from lapsed fans. Those lapsed fans almost certainly attended the final games of last season, the play offs and final, but the expectation of the majority of fans for this season is almost universally it will be a struggle to remain in the division. The fans who have attended throughout last season watched some pretty dire football leading up to December, the first home game, attracted 15000, in December we played Mansfield and the attendance had dropped by a thousand, we played Crawley in the now infamous night game and it had dropped by 4000. Fans, will attend if we are winning games and I understand Airman's points about pricing but all of that goes in hand with the product on display, contrast QPR's attendance yesterday, almost 6000 less than was at the Valley yesterday. My point is that there is not just one single reason for a below expected attendance, it's multiple.
  • Can't seem to get my head around some people saying Kaminski could have cost us, presumably regarding their "penalty" appeal, as far as I see it he went after the ball, and the guy lifted it over him and proceeded to fall over Kaminski purely by his momentum, I don't know what else Kaminski could do, he didn't "trip" the guys feet or anything like that, it was just a coming together...🤷‍♂️

I agree with this, the ball was long gone and if an outfield player a deffo penalty. But I think keeper's get more leeway because the nature of their game is diving at players feet which limits their ability to stop. Few keepers get booked for fouls in the box.

Noticeable that the back three were pushing well up to the halfway line, helping competition for 2nd ball, which we can get away with due to the pace of Bell and Ramsay. If either is out, I hope NJ will modify his tactics
  • Does seem NJ is disliked by so many opposing fans - he seems to thrive on it. Gets us publicity....
  • As a side issue, did anybody else hear that bunch of Watford fans in Floyd Road after the game singing:-
"We lost last week and we lost today,
We lose at home and we lose away..."
I didn't catch the next bit, but they didn't sound happy  :D

They were singing “Back to back relegations!” at London Bridge. And that was before the game!
  • Though Carey was superb yesterday.

Question (apologies if this has been asked already) , where do he and Knibbs fit in together in this side? Or indeed can they play in the same 11?
Can play both of them behind one solo striker but then you have lots of strikers on the bench and lose some width. One of them could play the Doc role in theory too but would lose some attacking threat obviously

I agree it’s not only about price, but price is a factor. You can't build any argument around the club’s announced attendances, though. Neither the 15,000 nor the 11,000 bear any relation to the actual.

  • Not an expert but would have thought we won’t really see the maximum crowd potential (STH not on holiday etc) until the Blackburn game

First 3pm ko not on tv outside of peak holiday season and whilst Millwall will hopefully get a decent crowd there are always some that don’t fancy it for some reason ( despite the fact the amount of OB make it the safest game of the season)

Comparisons to other bigger clubs like Coventry etc are pointless given they no doubt have a higher waiting list for tickets than we do, so season ticket holders that are on holiday now probably shift them to a mate a lot easier

Form will also help as well obviously for the floating support

The will he do that when they finish 14th comments!!!! probably because if we finish 14th as a newly promoted club, that will be a very successful season!

No sign of lack of sharpness because of 3 weeks lost due to play-offs, although subs were managed well and Tuesday will help those with even shorter pre-season.

EFL are asking for trouble with the lead up to Wembley. A club going straight back down will rightly be aggrieved at their lack of preparation time. Won't be us, I can see us top eight when all up to speed.

Thought it was lovely that the players had Ethan’s name and a heart on their tops. Must have meant a lot to the family.
I've probably missed it, but are there any close up photos of the shirt from yesterday?

I don't understand the, "He only celebrates because he knows somebody is watching!" comments. Who celebrates, as a football manager, on their own in an empty stadium with no players or fans. Such idiotic statements.

There was one Luton fan, however, that responded saying that although he can be a bit of showman, no way is he a fraud. I'll take that from a manger that wants to prove himself at the highest level; my only hope is he finishes the project with us, has learnt his lesson and doesn't jump ship.

Yeah seen a lot of that from fans of clubs rival to Luton and Stoke probably because of his pressers and not having much of a filter so it's that bitterness, saying that even the Hollywood Welsh mob thought he was doing it all for them and the sky cameras.

I guess it's because outside of clubs he's managed he's still not massively "high profile"  wasn't at saints and Stoke long enough for the wider football community to catch on that, actually, hes  just a bit fing mental.

I like it, in a world of predominantly beige managers having one give it is fine by me, especially with the amount of stick he gets.
Think your last sentence sums it up perfectly.

So many cut and paste media trained bore fest managers out there spouting the same crap week in week out, whilst also standing with their hands in their pockets on the touchline trying to look like they have it all under control.

Give me a basket case Welshman any day of the week over that monotonous rubbish

I’m still concerned about Leaburns body language, he just doesn’t seem happy, thought the same before he got injured last season.
