Mitchell just made me realise how good Lloyd Jones is
Jones is 10x the player, rolls royce of a player
Yep Jones is our best player, some people only notice it when he’s not there.

As for Mitchell, he was awful - I take full responsibility as I said during the week that I thought he was one of the few players that might be able to make the step up to the championship. Regretting those comments now!
Mitchell’s 23 and was thrown in having not had much game time in the last few months. He still has the potential to step up to the Championship.

He seems to have developed a strange 'gait' - been wondering if he has some underlying injury issue going on which is why he's been dropped out of the picture for a while to allow him to rest up a bit?

At the moment there are three things that may play against him, he's not quick, he's not the best passer of the ball and Zach Mitchell can play in that position. If we lose Thierry Small at the seasons end bringing Zach into the back three and moving Ramsay back out wide would not be disaster.

Genuinely forgot he's only 23, feels like he's in his 30's for some reason.

Yeah agree, though he could still find the right club and play at Championship level even if it’s not with us or if it takes a few years. Michael Morrison and Tom Lockyer weren’t particularly quick or talented with the ball, I don’t think the Championship level is so high that every CB is quick and a good passer, though it helps.

Also being dropped for so long might have damaged confidence .  It’s not long ago that Jones fell off a cliff and looked horrendous .  The damage was done before Mitchell came on yesterday

Maybe he can, but I can see why Millwall never played him in the Championship, as he lacks mobility.

Similar things were said about Jones last season, he's only 23, no guarantees but he could become a championship level centre half

Yeah agree, he needs regular game time at L1 level and to show he can be consistently good at this level, just as Jones has really stepped up another level after last season (where he was still decent for us and had potential but needed to show he could offer more).

Jones was pretty woeful last season, but has turned his skillset around. Perhaps he was carrying a knock.

Any chance NJ could be asked about Mitchell in an interview? Interested to hear whether we receive any more information or just hear that 'his situation has not changed since a few months ago'.

I can understand that it might not be a useful question going into the playoffs.

"Alex Mitchell has joined Plymouth Argyle on a season-long loan.

Always expected the centre-back, 23, to make a temporary move away from Charlton.

Mitchell has always shown a strong desire to play first-team football, even going back to when he was on Millwall's books."
  • Didn’t realise he was only 23, needs to be playing. Good move for him, suits league one.

No suprise here, ousted by Ramsay and then we also signed Burke to play RCB, his best bet was to be second fiddle to Jones as the central defender, but he's the kind of guy that wants to play football so a loan is best for all parties

Loan rather than a sale, I imagine, means we do still see him in our plans long-term.

Good move, he’s a great defender in league 1, and still at an age where he can develop into a championship centre back

    From PAFC official site:

Argyle have signed central defender Alex Mitchell on a season-long loan from Sky Bet Championship side, Charlton Athletic.

Mitchell’s career began at Millwall, and he went on to have valuable loan spells at Bromley, Leyton Orient, St Johnstone and Lincoln City during his four years at The Den.

The 23-year-old joined Charlton last summer and went on to make 31 league appearances, scoring two goals, as The Addicks gained promotion through the Sky Bet League One play-offs.

Argyle Head Coach Tom Cleverley is delighted to strengthen his defensive department and added: “It is no secret that we have been looking to add defensive options and in Alex we feel we have the perfect addition.

“He is young but has good experience of League One and played an integral part in Charlton’s promotion last season, so brings with him experience of consistently winning.

“We are really pleased to bring him to the club, and he will go straight into the squad for tomorrow’s game.”

David Fox, Argyle's Head of Football Operations, added: “Once we knew Alex was available, we jumped at the opportunity to bring him to Home Park.

“We are aware our defensive record hasn’t been good enough so far this season and bringing in someone of Alex’s experience and ability will hopefully go a long way to rectifying that.

“He is tall and physical, good in both boxes, and just a good defender. He will bring positivity and freshness to the group and instil a winning mentality.

“I want to welcome Alex to Argyle and look forward to seeing him in Green soon.”

Alex will wear shirt number 15 and is available for tomorrow night’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Leyton Orient, subject to EFL approval.

Not sure how i feel about this. Was always a question whether he would do okay in the championship, but with burkes injury history does anyone else think we are a bit light? Maybe a loan to cover.

I guess they think the other Mitchell can step up.

Unless it means we are signing Duffy. Not the Rockferry one.

Not the player I thought he’d be when he signed.

A massive shithouse though which I rate highly.

Hope he does well there and gives Jones something to think about in the Prem next season.

I like zach but I felt alex was the more natural replacement for LJ in the middle. Maybe it came down to AM wanting to play. In NJ we trust.

Very solid player who is only 23. A battler who was a bit unlucky to lose his place. He also seemed to be good for the dressing room.
Shows how quickly football can move on.
    Good luck to him.
