12 months ago Wycombe were on a 12 game winless run but they stuck with their manager and we’ve just ended their 19 game unbeaten run a year later. It happens in football all the time and nothing good would have coming from sacking Nathan Jones in October, November or December.10 -

Jones and the board will be delighted that we have found ourselves back in the play off hunt, in time for the January window. The defence seems fine, just need that additional quality at the top of pitch.2 -
What I think you can say for Jones is he's always said we're not far off being a very good side. Sometimes that was almost impossible to see, and based on the fact we kept doing the same thing, completely failing in midfield and chopping and changing the team it felt like the breakthrough would never come. We were always strong at the back and we always got goals (in the second half) but we were so bad as an overall side he seemed delusional. One big player coming back and a tweak that's finally given us some width though and you can actually see what he was driving at.We're still strong at the back but with TC pulling wide and Small hammering up the right our midfielders suddenly have additional space to play the ball into, the diagonal from the back has more space to drop into and when the midfielders receive the ball back the space is less compressed. Counters drag defenders out of position instead of being reliant on one player storming through and because of the outball up the pitch and wingbacks can put crosses in after some space has been created by the wide man. We've actually seen some overlaps. Suddenly the press is better, the defence is more settled and we're getting the best out of Small, TC, Leaburn, Berry and Doc. The side is settled because we're playing well and it's actually fun watching us. The 'worst team in our history' suddenly looks good without any transfers all because of one minor tactical tweak. The challenge now is adapting again once teams figure us out and do something to deal with it, but Jones can argue that this is what he meant after we've just deservedly beaten the team in second and won three in a row6

I guess he was waiting for his most reliable and influential defender to return before committing to this new way of playing.
Has started to turn it around like was hoping for as wasn't fully onboard with Jones out. Interesting Jan ahead for sure.

But either way Jones isn’t getting sacked pretty much regardless of what happens over the rest of the season so I’m not certain the debate on this thread helps us as a club at all.2 -
To be fair a lot of people, myself included, wanted to give him a little more time and were opposed to changing managers yet again.
One thing is certain, our style of play has improved greatly in recent weeks.
Whether that was a result of the criticism levelled at him, we'll never know for sure, but it seems highly likely.4 -

I don't think many were seriously calling for him to go. And that's mainly because there was not a lot out there to replace him. And as others have said, we can't keep chopping and changing managers.
I did start to think the players weren't buying into his ethos and that is always the death knell for any manager.
The pleasing thing is these past few games show they are 100% behind him. And long may it continue.

Jones football has been absolute dog shit and 3 wins doesn't chage that. If we had been half good so far this season we'd be going into the NY a top 4 team.
Looking forward though, there's definitely optimisim again rather than blind hope. Feels nice to be looking forward to upcoming fixtures... its been a while !.2 - Sponsored links:

Fair play on today, a very solid performance against a side who hadn’t lost since August. We did it to Birmingham too though and then went on a pitiful run; our tactics seem to work better against the better, possession/ territory based teams. We also won 3 in a row at the start of the season and that also fell apart.I think the season has been poor for the most part and we are still below where we need to be and were promised, in what is a very weak division. I remain very unconvinced by Jones and his style, tactics and overall management but am buzzing we are back in some kind of competing position again. I’m certainly not counting any chickens given what’s occurred thus far this season, but here’s hoping he can take us on a Bowyer-esque surge and really justify some of his post match bitching!5

Onwards and upwardsThere can be no pretending we have been appalling for large parts of this season, and our points tally and position remain comfortably below the play offs which is the absolute minimum requirement this season.Improvement in both performance and results needs to continue for some time to prove the doubters wrong. 8th place finish and some points of Birmingham and Wrexham is of no interest to me, or indeed the owners, this season.I hope he attempts to win more games, succeeds, and proves me wrong!11 -

These three wins don’t mean everything has been fixed, but the thing I wanted to see Jones do is prove he can arrest slide and turn form around again. Every team goes through sticky patches but what we’d seen this season was too self-inflicted. Jones seemed rigid and stubborn in his long ball tactics and too many of our big summer signings were not contributing enough.
He’s been helped by Lloyd Jones’ return and Leaburn starting to look more up to speed, but, crucially, he has ditched the pure long ball football for a more balanced and pragmatic style and that has seen improvements form the like of Doc and Berry.
I’m encouraged that he’s shown himself to be more flexible than I feared he was and the way we are playing now does feel more sustainable and like a platform to go forwards with. Credit to him for that.
Hopefully we can make some good additions in January to add some more options to the midfield/attack and have a proper go at the play-offs from here. He’s certainly at least bought himself some more patience from me.12 -

It’s weird how things work out. Everyone slated Jones for putting Small at RWB against Huddersfield and for persisting with TC up front. Both seem to be working pretty well now2

You've first of all posted saying you are basically digging through posts to see any negative posts about Jones, which could be seen as antagonising.
Then you've posted leave me be, as its been a rough few weeks?
Not being funny, but everyone is entitled to enjoy that win as much as the next fan, why are you trying to separate yourself like you've gone through some hardships? I think I remember one person or maybe two posting at you when we conceded? Hardly your name all over match threads.
If you are opinionated, you create a lightning rod for your back. Please stop with the siege mentality on a football forum, when fans were rightly calling out the shit football for what it was.
It was horrific, it hasn't been horrific for 4 games, it's been great. Simple.16 -
Loved seeing Mitchell and jones today slamming into each other in a aggressive job well done manner and high fiving after a successful block or header, they have such an understanding of each other and both fight for the shirt and a clean sheet, things you love to see. Such a vast difference to our defence this season.19

Ie the width and directness small offers helps TC be slightly more effective2 -

the Crawley performance was the tipping point for me into Jones needing to go territory. It’s not the defeat but the way we were playing too. I’m delighted to have been proven wrong for now and if we can continue with the type of performance we saw today then I’ll be delighted.Never go expecting a win but equally can’t stomach endless hoof ball with zero quality. Hopefully we have turned a corner and we will see a much stronger second half of the season.1

I now greet my cousin George with similar high fives when I see him.
Some duo them two, proper centre backs.1 -

If we were getting dragged into a relegation fight and he wasn't getting a tune then maybe we'd have had to try something else.
But if Jones goes now realistically who else is there?
we'd only ever end up with another Appleton.0 -
Forums and social media turn everyone mad in terms of having a tribe or a 'stance'.
Who cares? Great thing about this place is that we all want the same thing – Charlton winning.
Everyone was entitled to slag off the terrible football before, and everyone deserves to enjoy this upturn now.
Don't follow Charlton through the prism of the views you and others have put on the internet. It'll drive you mad.10 -

If you read the Vitriol from Nicholas before the 3 game winning run, Nathan Jones must've drowned his puppies, burnt his table tennis table and shagged his...
My criticism was playing the 3 central strikers together for two matches which was a disaster.
I think NJ had a lightbulb moment and we really did start to get players in wider positions more. Both Campbell and Small have gone past defenders in recent matches out wider !
Like many I predicted 7th to 10th back in early August and we need to be more consistent than just 3 matches but if we can keep important players fit then we may at least go close to the play offs.

Coventry in particular has really found his feet. He's not an attack minded, 40 yard baller. His job should only be to protect the back 3 and distribute the ball to the attack minded when he wins it back. Anderson is going to have to really up his game to dislodge Cov for me.1 -

I see him as a like for like for Coventry myself. Gets a foot in and can cover a lot of ground. Really need to improve his distribution though.
I see Taylor as a Doch/Berry hybrid0
