I have no doubt adding some attacking flair into the mix is the next step. But it doesn’t happen overnight if your entire focus was on fixing the defending first.
We are seeing small shoots of it recently. It will only improve further with time. Or at least that’s the theory.
He’s a good manager and he deserves our trust to know what he’s doing.19 -

We’ve played 3-5-2, a box 4-4-2, a diamond 4-4-2 and now gone back to 3-5-2 that shifts to 4-2-3-1 in attack but with a more balanced style rather than a defensive route one.
I wasn’t happy with the football but realised a few games back we were still keeping games tight, it only needed a few tweaks, some better players being fit and at some point there would be games in which we scored first, and in the first half.
We’re now more enjoyable to watch, not just because of the results but during games as we have a team playing decent football. These players looked worse than they are, particularly the midfield, because of the route one style.12 -
If he manages to get 15/15pts on this little mini run, I might even buy a ticket (as long as it's not too chilly) - I'll give him that...1

I'm not convinced that Rylah or Dixon cannot make an impact if TC or Small aren't available.
Wingers are vilified for lack of end product, but you only need one moment of brilliance to create a goal. Both have it in their lockers.3 -
This is is my first comment on this post.I don’t think in a month of Sundays we will get a better manager than what we’ve currently got.I think he can get us into the playoffs.6

Building from the back is how you build sustainable success. Teams who are successful don't concede too many goals. For years we have conceded too many and have needed a manager who could fix that. Jones started that last season and has done a good job of continuing it this season. The problem was he took it to an extreme and it was to the detriment of all other aspects of our play and a lot of our players.
His post-match comments often gave the impression he was either being belligerent or was just in denial about our playing style. It wasn't a recipe for encouraging fans to keep the faith because the was little hint he was going to change the things we could all see needed changing. I don't think anyone in the fanbase really had an appetite for another managerial change, but the circumstances we were in it just felt like it was building towards another sacking (I fully expected to see him gone after Crawley). Questioning if NJ was still the right man for the job, given where things were 3 games ago, was never an unreasonable position.
Happily, he has made some adjustments, in particular ditching the ultra-long ball style, and it has yielded good results. That has vindicated those who called for more patience. Fair play if you were in that camp, although I would suggest no one predicted the turnaround we have seen to be quite so dramatic. It's a funny old game.4 -

The pleasing thing is these past few games show they are 100% behind him. And long may it continue.

My criticism was playing the 3 central strikers together for two matches which was a disaster.
I think NJ had a lightbulb moment and we really did start to get players in wider positions more. Both Campbell and Small have gone past defenders in recent matches out wider !
Like many I predicted 7th to 10th back in early August and we need to be more consistent than just 3 matches but if we can keep important players fit then we may at least go close to the play offs.1 -

Now we have seen what more open and attacking football can do and his plan does look better with that hindsight/knowledge - but the fact that he genuinely did seem to be burning bridges and that his hand was at least partially forced by availability issues means that I still can't help feeling that good fortune is just as much to thank for the turnaround as some sort of 4D Chessmaster management vision.
Either way it's working now, long may it continue and hopefully a good January will see astute movement to continue the recent improvements. But I won't apologise or change my mind for saying that for several months beforehand, the football was atrocious because it really really was. Good results now don't and won't retroactively make some of those prior games any better.

You and Callum are Yin and Yan so perhaps you are the light and dark that forum's attract and need 🤔
For 10+ plus that I've been on CL you always talk in extremes so it was no surprise but TBF to you most of us were discombobulated with the type of football being played which made all our players look worse than they probably are; Some are quite limited !
Why it took NJ 20 games to realize there's some bog standard full backs in the 3rd tier and they need exploiting is a mystery to you and me and most.
Other than ultra positive Callum, everyone on CL was posing questions about the turgid football being dealt other than the games against Bolton and Birmingham before the last 3 games and even Cambridge was mainly dire after the two gifts from the keeper but at least we did attack wider with Campbell pace ( you don't rate him) and Small can have his moments as shown against WW.
We are in agreement that if say Leaburn and Lloyd Jones get injured again, it will be mid table mediocrity for yet another season.
I'm sticking with 7th to 10th as i get too disappointed with my glass half full glass when it spills. I assume your Glass is smashed 🙁
Healthy and happy new year to all and 3 points at Crawley 🤞🏻I will always go home and away it's what I have done my whole life but all I want in return is a club to be proud of not the shit show its been for so long now.
Happy new year to you and all and like you said 3 points at Crawley please.16 -
Need to keep Lloyd Jones fit for our defence to function.3

It's still not great, but if you have a defensive solid base and two quality young players up top you have a chance to win matches.
Happy to see Leaburn and Campbell get a chance to link up. There was a tactical tweak yesterday to get TC out wide where he is exceptional in this division. It makes me wish we got to see it more tbh. Put one on a plate for Berry and made it look easy.0 -

With Campbell and Small we can now get behind teams and Leaburn is starting to get up to speed after a long injury. I think the defence has been ok but this change makes defences far less comfortable which at this level equates to more goals.0

I knew it wouldn’t be good for my head, and could be considered to be an out and out pile on, which I could do with out.
But whether you still think NJ is the right bloke for the job or not, we have still had a ridiculous amount of injuries this season, still.. some really unfortunate.
I still don’t think the squad depth has a serious amount of quality to maintain a serious promotion push, and I hope we get a few more decent quality players in, in January.
Im trying to not get stressed about Charlton, it’s important, but not the be all, and end all in life, just give the bloke time to sort stuff out.
Stockport and Reading currently occupy 5th and 6th and i wouldn't say their squads have any serious quality. Reading i think are also under a transfer embargo as well.4 -

Hoping we hit rock bottom with the performances against Crawley and Orient.

Let’s not forget, we’ve just been through a horrendous, prolonged period of shocking form. Sacking Jones looked inevitable, but what concerned me more was the ability of the SMT to choose and attract a decent replacement. Also, their spin that all the recruitment and decisions were down to NJ lacked accountability and ultimately is poor leadership. That is still my major worry going forward, the leaders right at the top of the club are not performing. That and an unbalanced squad, if we lose those few players who give us width we’re back to hoof ball.1

I really hope we can improve for you and your son, Nicholas(and all Addicks) as the last 5 seasons have been a really low period compared to the turn of this century when we were an ambitious club with decent home crowds in the Premier.
You wear your heart on your sleeve but I understand your passion and respect your response to my post.
Can Charlton Athletic give more joy and less angst in '25' as we all need a lift.
Nathan Jones has to own the way we played and hopefully the way we started to play with a better shape over the last few games and using the width in a pro active way.
A couple of strong players added and no Leaburn, Lloyd Jones etc leaving would give us all a boost in January with still half a season to go.

I was never really in the Jones out camp - however I was very much questioning his coaching ability - and was miffed that he had ever been picked to manage a premiership team.
Does now feel like we are starting to see some genuinely good phases of attacking play, and I hope that Jones can continue to develop that side of the play.
Reading pressed us really well for phases yesterday, and did a great job of doubling up on us when we got it out on the wings - but as the tired and some gaps started to open up I thought we exploited them very well.
I was actually impressed with Gillespheys passing, thought he kept finding Coventry in nice little pockets quiet often as the game progressed.
I just hope it’s not a false dawn - and Jones can keep us progressing.

I was erring towards sacking Jones mainly due to the style of lump it football we where playing, happy to be proved wrong as the football in the last few games has improved massively, long may it continue.

@Callumcafc you're one of the biggest contributors to this site and you nearly always keep the chat to football. Take all the pokes with a pinch of salt, i've certainly made fun regarding the May/Godden situation. It's the pile ons i cant stand and sadly there are posters who get dug out - not nice when it gets personal.
I think you have enough support to keep your head above water. Besides, we all want the same thing, even @golfaddick i think!

I remember reading from Luton fans that it took Jones a few months to find the right formula with them in 17/18. Then it finally clicked at the end of Jan and they only lost 2 games for the rest of the season. Hopefully that’s a similar situation to us, and personally I’m glad we gave him time. We’re on good form, and with guys like Chuks and Ramsay coming back, there’s a genuine chance at top 6 imo.11

I veered into the Jones out camp a bit later than some having the we can't keep sacking managers view, then I tipped into it for a week but without the upturn went back to the keep him view as I could see the same pattern repeating itself. I am glad we have seen a turnaround and long may it continue. I hate listening to his interviews but he is there to get results, not be liked. He is clearly in a much better position now.2
-
I'm still not convinced that we've turned the corner, despite it feeling like we have.
I also joined the Jones Out camp later than most, but I like to take time to analyse what I'm seeing and I think that it's sensible to not flip flop views. Here's hoping we can see out the next couple of league fixtures, as for me that's what matters, cups are a bit of fun, but usually of little benefit, especially in a promotion chasing season.
If Jones can take at least 9 points from 15 available in a tough January, he'll have my backing to see out the season. *Edit* Obviously a complete collapse after that would change an opinion.2 -
