  • The best thing about this thread is that everyone’s comments are all in one place… I don’t have to go scouring through loads of different threads looking for them.

Up to 7th… Nathan Jones’ reds go marching on…
Remember leaving The Valley after the Crawley game thinking that Jones will probably get the Lincoln match, purely because Doherty & Berry were suspended for that Crawley performance. Imagine he will be pleased that two of big summer signings have come back into the team and started to put in big performances.

Jones and the board will be delighted that we have found ourselves back in the play off hunt, in time for the January window. The defence seems fine, just need that additional quality at the top of pitch.
  • I guess he was waiting for his most reliable and influential defender to return before committing to this new way of playing.

Has started to turn it around like was hoping for as wasn't fully onboard with Jones out. Interesting Jan ahead for sure.

This is why you stick by a good manager rather than sacking him at the first sign of poor form
I’d argue it was slight more than the “first sign” of poor form, it was atrocious form full stop.

But either way Jones isn’t getting sacked pretty much regardless of what happens over the rest of the season so I’m not certain the debate on this thread helps us as a club at all.
  • To be fair a lot of people, myself included, wanted to give him a little more time and were opposed to changing managers yet again.
One thing is certain, our style of play has improved greatly in recent weeks.
Whether that was a result of the criticism levelled at him, we'll never know for sure, but it seems highly likely.

Indeed, let's reevaluate in the summer, during the season/after a few wins isn't really the time to dig out others
You’re right, but Callum had people digging him out on this thread after losses so I can understand his perspective.
    Thanks.

Funny how we should evaluate in the summer after a few wins eh…

Allow me to enjoy it folks. Being on this forum wasn’t much fun only a couple of weeks ago, having my name posted all over match threads when we conceded a goal etc.

You should have tried being a Trump supporter over on the political boards mate!
  • I don't think many were seriously calling for him to go. And that's mainly because there was not a lot out there to replace him. And as others have said, we can't keep chopping and changing managers.

I did start to think the players weren't buying into his ethos and that is always the death knell for any manager.
The pleasing thing is these past few games show they are 100% behind him. And long may it continue.

I mean, I just wouldn't go digging people out because we could go on another run of 10 results and it looks muggy.... as is people calling you out for positivity.

Jones football has been absolute dog shit and 3 wins doesn't chage that. If we had been half good so far this season we'd be going into the NY a top 4 team.

Looking forward though, there's definitely optimisim again rather than blind hope. Feels nice to be looking forward to upcoming fixtures... its been a while !.

It’s weird how things work out. Everyone slated Jones for putting Small at RWB against Huddersfield and for persisting with TC up front. Both seem to be working pretty well now

One possibly because of the other

Ie the width and directness small offers helps TC be slightly more effective

    Allez allez allez🎶

  • the Crawley performance was the tipping point for me into Jones needing to go territory. It’s not the defeat but the way we were playing too. I’m delighted to have been proven wrong for now and if we can continue with the type of performance we saw today then I’ll be delighted.

Never go expecting a win but equally can’t stomach endless hoof ball with zero quality. Hopefully we have turned a corner and we will see a much stronger second half of the season.

Loved seeing Mitchell and jones today slamming into each other in a aggressive job well done manner and high fiving after a successful block or header, they have such an understanding of each other and both fight for the shirt and a clean sheet, things you love to see. Such a vast difference to our defence this season.
I said to my cousin they remind me of this:

I now greet my cousin George with similar high fives when I see him.

Some duo them two, proper centre backs.

    You’ve got to be joking?
Maybe I paraphrased that wrong. They might have been saying it but deep down they knew there wasn't any quick fixes. We've walked this road before. Many times.

If we were getting dragged into a relegation fight and he wasn't getting a tune then maybe we'd have had to try something else.
But if Jones goes now realistically who else is there?
we'd only ever end up with another Appleton.

If you read the Vitriol from Nicholas before the 3 game winning run, Nathan Jones must've drowned his puppies, burnt his table tennis table and shagged his...

My criticism was playing the 3 central strikers together for two matches which was a disaster.
I think NJ had a lightbulb moment and we really did start to get players in wider positions more. Both Campbell and Small have gone past defenders in recent matches out wider !

Like many I predicted 7th to 10th back in early August and we need to be more consistent than just 3 matches but if we can keep important  players fit then we may at least go close to the play offs.

Agree. Id add the middle2/3 really seem to know their roles now and are not treading on each others toes.
Coventry in particular has really found his feet. He's not an attack minded, 40 yard baller. His job should only be to protect the back 3 and distribute the ball to the attack minded when he wins it back. Anderson is going to have to really up his game to dislodge Cov for me.

Anderson’s always been box to box or an attacking midfielder under Jones, he’s the competition for Docherty and Berry. Taylor’s the alternative to Coventry.

Can't see it. His distribution is awful and he's poor in front of goal
I see him as a like for like for Coventry myself. Gets a foot in and can cover a lot of ground. Really need to improve his distribution though.
    I see Taylor as a Doch/Berry hybrid
