POST MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Leyton Orient : Saturday 17th August 2024 : KO 12:30

The main talking point of the first half was Sean Clare's late challenge on Josh Edwards, which only earned Clare a booking despite Edwards being stretchered off. We had a couple of scruffy chances, and Orient caused us trouble at the back on a couple of occasions, but it wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination. Second half we looked a bit better, particularly once Godden and Chuks came on, although there wasn't a lot in it to be honest, and Luke Berry got a 92nd minute winner with a shot into the bottom left corner to put us top of the league for the moment.

Can’t question the fight in this team. Don’t give a damn how we get there, all that matters is the 3 points.

Hoping we hear news soon on Edward’s, thankful to have a great 2nd option in Small

As I said on the Match thread, could do with Dixon signing, raw yes, but a little bit of magical energy is the missing piece

A deserved win after Orient tried to slow the game down throughout.

After last season, what a feeling to have back to back clean sheets in the league!

Concerned about Edwards. He didn't look good when going off. Disgusting from Clare, he should be ashamed of himself flying in like that.
  • Job done... We didnt create endless chances, pepper their Goalkeeper or score on mulitple occasions, like many on here will hate this season, but it doesnt matter... WE GOT THE JOB DONE!!

Would have been criminal had we lost that, apart from a few forays throughout the game, we were in absolute control. We do need to be more clinical when we get into good positions, our crossing could be better, the likes of Adahme could go looking for the ball, rather than waiting for it to come to him.

But this was a classic fixture that we'll get time and time in League One this season, teams are going to sit back, frustrated us by getting men in the way, and putting their men on the ground to waste time... Orient's tactics were nothing new today.

We finally found a way today though, we didnt just find a way... We held on to it, last season we'd have been ahead and we'd have fallen apart, either losing or ending with a 1-1 draw, but our defence is doing the job it needs to be doing.

Goals win you games... Clean Sheets win you promotion

WE ARE TOP THE LEAGUE (For now)

Just watched the goal back. Nice finish right into the corner, but their keeper seemed to go down in instalments trying to get to it.

A win is a win and another clean sheet too. But blimey, it was a tough watch at times.

As gutting as it is to lose Edwards, Small is an absolute terror for the opposition. Constantly looking to attack.

Really hope this is the start of something special this season. Just a couple more quality additions and I think we'll be real contenders.

Yeah bet the Goalkeeper will be annoyed with having conceded that at his near post... Proper snuck past him

Didn't look good, was in a protective boot and on crutches at the end

Take that. Feel much more confident about our defence. Hope Edwards injury is not to serious. Two out of two. Good win.

Tell you one metric we were far far superior than Orient in - fitness.

They were so leggy in the final part of that match, where as we just seemed to be getting stronger.
Think that’s ultimately what won us the game. It was attack v defence for the last 20 minutes and it was only a matter of time until the goal came

We ground them into submission and finally got the goal our effort and desire deserved.

Love to see a Charlton side that works their bollocks off and wins games of football by overworking and overpowering the opposition.
The NJ method. It isn't pretty but if your players are super fit it's very effective at this level.

You're not here to have fun. Honestly though, that's now three games played, one with a very changed team, and we've only conceded one goal, and that one was a worldie. We really don't look troubled at the back and now we just have to work on the midfield and forward cohesion. Two league games in of 44, I think we can give them some time to gel there. The only stat that really counts is 6 points from 6, and I really doubt we're at our best. Would be a perfect day if not for the Edwards injury. Fingers crossed it's not too bad but I'm not hugely hopeful. I was already annoyed at the two years of rubbishness from Clare, didn't need this as well from him

I like Mannion, saves well, commands his box and good distribution, however I'll admit that he hasn't been tested that much yet

Good 3 points, but we made really hard work of it, thought Chucks and his pure physical presence had a huge effect on the game.

Thought the referee was another duffer, Clare definitely should have got sent off for his diabolical tackle.

We are top of the league lol.

The ref has assistants so inexcusable he missed that sending off. Then he basically gave Beckles a free pass to foul Aneke as much as he wanted too. Felt he lost contol of the game in parts. I am sure Clare didn't mean to hurt Edwards but it was a dangerous challenge on the high end of dangerous seeing how late he was. You have to punish that severely for the legitimacy of the sport. Clare shouldn't get away with it but probably will.

Deserved that win and played some good stuff at times. I've mentioned before that we will get better as the season goes on and if we can add a couple more decent additions then great but we are a million miles from last year, for the better!

Coventry on corners isn't working. He played well though!

Certainly have reasons to be optimistic for sure.

Yeah will feel for him a bit if we get a No.1 Goalkeeper in, but its too early to put any faith in him - He's good coming from crosses though.

Better second half, not a great attacking performance but to be fair Orient were just trying every trick in the book to slow or delay the game, awful side. Thought Jones and Gillesphy were excellent and Coventry too in the second half. Not sure Campbell and Adahme are the strike duo to take us up hoping Godden will fit right in. Good effort till the end though and we deserved the win more than them.

Nice to see a keeper actually claim a couple of crosses wasn't it
