That was quite random. As I was having a piss at the time, had wondered what triggered it!

An emotional night for Alfie May. His reaction to scoring the 3rd goal felt a bit like the Dennis Law goal for City that sent United down, and after the final whistle he was doubled up for quite a while, as if we had just lost a cup final or been relegated.

I think he would have preferred it if Small has lashed it in himself  :)

Relief last night at FT.  Tinge of sadness this morning.  What a wasted season this has been... 9 points from the last 5 games against some really good sides, all brought about by... being energetic and doing the basics well.  Even accounting for injuries, it's a scandal that this group of players have ever been flirting with the drop.  We should have walked into the playoffs this year.

Excited to see what Jones can do with a few extra faces and a proper pre-season in them.

Coventry, Gillesphey, Edmonds-Green, Small, Ramsay and Bakinson weren’t here earlier in the season, and they’ve made a big difference.
Despite all the stick Scott got in January and February it appears to have been a pretty good window.

January was a good window considering you are only getting players who's career's have stagnated for various reasons or are young who needs games.

Many showing with games they are decent now match fit.

I personally never criticised Andy Scott for the January window as many of the players had good pedigrees BUT he was the main man who thought Michael Appleton was the right fit for a club on the slide.

He was 100% wrong and that was a poor judgement call.

It is so so nice to look at that form table and not see a patch of red for us in the centre column.

I don't disagree to be honest, I think it's looking like a good window.  Think they've all been terrific and Small in particular looks like a steal.  But look at Anderson, Thomas, Kanu, Watson etc, and compare performances pre- and post-Jones.  It's night and day.  Even with the squad we had in December, coached properly we should have been more than capable of competing up the top end of this division imo.
  • We really must address the GK situation in the summer. Isted always has an error in him. For last nights goal conceded the original shot on goal was virtually no more than a pass strength attempt that was put in when it wasn’t held by Isted. Not good enough. We need GK who inspires confidence. Neither of our two do.
There was a big deflection off of Lloyd Jones as it went through his legs, making it very difficult for Isted. Personally don't think he can be blamed for that goal - our defenders should be following up, they didn't and their man did to score.
Thanks. I didn’t notice a deflection so that changes things for me with regard to their goal but even so, we must look to bring in a first choice GK for next season. Personally I’d keep Isted as number two and try and get a fee if possible for Maynard-Brewer.

I get the impression that Appleton was chosen because the SMT thought he was a safe pair of hands and kept the budget low. When it became obvious that things were going spectacularly wrong I think the owners took advice outside of the SMT and decided to get hands on. I suspect Scott is under more scrutiny than he previously was.

We should be thankful to Appleton, you know. If he hadn’t been so inept, we would never have got Nathan Jones.
Agree. They currently enjoy identical win ratios with us, which only goes to show, I don't know what. Anyway, it wont stay that way for long, hopefully not beyond Saturday. The trend is clear and I hope NJ isn't tempted elsewhere before he's got us back into the Championship at least, and at last.

Appleton was always going to be a disaster 99% of the supporters knew that. I honestly don’t think even he wanted to be here and was just taking a wage. The bloke has a losing mentality especially when you consider he actually thought draws or narrow losses were a good result against “top top teams” like Lincoln etc this squad has always under performed this season and should be easily in the playoff positions a totally wasted season imo but onwards and upwards next season NJ will romp this league

Loved the way he held onto the post, tapped it to the tune of the drum and gave a cheeky smile and thumbs up in the 94th minute  :) he loves this club.

A pretty poor game of football but the result is all and an absolutely vital win which puts us 7 points clear of the bottom 4. But for the late error on Saturday, we'd have won 3 away games on the bounce, which is a hell of a turnaround, given that we'd only managed 1 out of the previous 15. That tells you something about a manager who has got the players going full throttle.

After 15 minutes of unadulterated hoof ball, we settled down and Dobson, Coventry and Watson combined exceptionally well for Kanu to finish with aplomb. After that, we missed a succession of chances - principally Alfie May but also Thierry Small's header at the far post - and somehow went in only 1-0 up. Most of us were probably thinking that, in the typical Charlton manner, we'd come to rue those misses. Sure enough, Cheltenham came out and gave it a real go in the second half, as we retreated into our shell and started to look leggy as the game wore on. We looked nervous at the back for most of the evening and after conceding a poor equaliser, I'd have been happy with a point, given what was at stake in this game. Happily, we managed to put the game to bed in the last 5 or 10 minutes, which came as an enormous relief.

The result sets us up beautifully for the Carlisle game on Saturday. Without taking anything for granted, another win will push us towards the calmer waters of mid table and provide some further optimism that the team is moving in the right direction. We can also stop nervously checking the results of teams like Port Vale, Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, which is not quite what I envisaged I'd be doing last August.

I enjoyed that. Tired this morning after getting in just gone 1 but worth it.

Great result against a spirited Cheltenham team who lacked quality but did make us work for it.

How Jones has changed this team is an embarrassment to Apples, its night and day in comparison. Hard to pick out individuals as was a good solid team performance but thought that may have been Watson best game for us. Just one of many players Jones has improved.

Anderson and Kanu gave everything once again, but they looked tired, but the subs did well when they come on.

Hopefully, REG is not too much of a bad one as he has been really good but at least we have Jones and Hector coming back.

Only grumble is we had enough chances to have that game wrapped up in the first half and we do still have a switch off in us at the back.

Although I also see great improvement in our play, I still think it’s too early to judge. If you compare NJ’s early results they really aren’t better than Appleton’s. At best you can argue that they are equal because we’ve just played the top 3.
However, Appleton didn’t have Small, Gillesphey, Bakinson or Coventry (EDIT and Edmonds Green)who were instrumental in our win last night. Nevertheless, in his first seven league games Appleton got 4 wins and 3 draws. NJ has got 2 wins, 4 draws and one defeat.

Hopefully we have the foundations now to get out of the relegation mire.

However, my concern is still with the SMT and Andy Scott.

Setting aside the vague messaging to fans, then a power point presentation that your 14 year old could produce better, ticket prices, clubs shop etc. All need an overhaul.

Then you come to the recruitment which has been the worst I've ever seen in 50 years.

Not only did we manage to bring in a few injured players, we also bought in a few ex injured and soon to be injured but to top that our Board said yes to bringing in some players that had less time on the pitch in 2 seasons than the blokes taking the Crossbar Challenge!

Nathan Jones has already shown what's he capable of and hopefully we will finish well but that should not allow the SMT/Scott to get a free pass.

There has to be consequences for ending up in this position in the first place and I hope Nathan gets far more control of player recruitment if we are to progress.

If nothing else the Owners must have realised by now that you cannot do League 1 football on the cheap.

Its good to see we have tighten up and concentrate a bit more since Nathen Jones  and the new players have come in. We should have won Saturday as well but at least now we have strung a few games together without defeat. Hopefully we can  get a few more points on the board and put this season out of its misery. I don't know the thinking behind getting Apples in but I suspect it was a cheap option and NJ not being available at the time of needing yet another manager, a decision that still may cost our place in this league.
I seriously want to be positive about our games but this season has been such let down, its hard to snap out of the doom and gloom mode. I cant get too excited about playing clubs that were non league when we were considered a middling well run decent club.

I believe that Jones will get the say on who comes in and who goes. If Scott is still here then his job would be to approach and negotiate fees and wages paid, but as in the case of Ramsey and Small, if Jones wants them then the club will set the wheels in motion. It's also interesting to see the players not used by Nathan Jones since his arrival, Edun has been benched, Taylor and Louie Watson, have either not featured or slipped down the order and Fiorini has never been anywhere near a first team place. I don't expect Taylor or Edun to be here in August and the loanee's certainly won't, with the players out of contract, the current 29 man squad will be reduced to 17 by the pre season.

Appleton also had CBT & Leaburn for that period. Much easier fixtures too with 5 homes games to boot.

When we got the ball down our passing game was too much for them. Should have been three up by half time. League position much improved; however, as Brownie said post-match, we have to maintain the work rate shown in the last few games against Carlisle, or the excellent results will count for nothing.
