It took ten or twelve minutes to settle the game down before Charlton went on to dominate the first half, going ahead on 19 minutes through a lovely bit of team play that put Daniel Kanu in position to slide the ball past the keeper from six yards. Unfortunately, despite shot after shot peppering the Cheltenham goal, the Addicks failed to extend their lead.
In the second half, Charlton absorbed a lot of pressure as Cheltenham fought their way back into contention. The Addicks were flat in comparison to earlier in the match as Cheltenham wrestled momentum back to their side. The Cheltenham equaliser came on 70 minutes as they waltzed through the Charlton back line and stabbed homem from close range.
Substitutions were made on 79 minutes, which proved pivotal, with Tyreeq Backinson coming on for the out-of-sorts Karoy Anderson. Backinson put the Addicks back in front on 86 minutes, finding himself on the end of a George Dobson cross, which he controlled and fired home from within the box. Only four minutes later the seemingly inevitable happened, with Alfie May scoring a tap in through Thierry Small’s selfless pass. The ball was gifted to Small through a slip up by the Cheltenham right back, which let Small through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Small put May in, which was a just reward for his industriousness. The third goal ensure the three points, with the Addicks moving up to 14th in the table.

Thierry Small my hero
Get Small signed up on a longer contract
A win is a win. 3 points and very little else matters. But we made bloody hard work of that!
A shockingly bad first 15 minutes but then the first sign of quality and a tremendous passage of play created the opening goal. Then we carved them open multiple times without being able to find the second.
It was the reverse in the second half when we looked tired and anxious, created little, conceded but then scored two late goals.
Thierry Small very good again. Karoy Anderson looked tired and we improved after Bakinson replaced him. I felt that Nathan Jones should have replaced him earlier.
Just hoping for another win at The Valley on Saturday to keep the momentum going.

We won and looks like we'll be back in this division next year.
The way we struggled for large parts of the second half worries me when planning for next season.
Watson and Ramsey are two good RB options for us to have.
The only surprise is that we didn’t score those goals first half.
Small has made an incredible start to his Charlton career. Fantastic.
I think I'd rather have the runs on the board.
Young Corey had an absolute nightmare tonight. His passing was just awful. He should have been taken off at least 20 minutes before he was. And as soon as Bakinson came on things improved.
Huge shout outs to Small - his fitness and athletism was unreal tonight. Sign him up now please - Coventry and Tennai Watson - considering he is playing with an injury he was very good.
Hopefully we are nearly safe now.
- We should have been 2 or 3 up at half time
- There’s no worry as I trust this group
- It’s a tough place to come, I’ve never won here before
- May had a lot of chances, big chances to score, pleased he scored at end
- Chuks picked up a little something at Derby. Just got to be careful so he doesn’t break down
