Sports Personality of the Year: Contenders revealed for 2020 BBC award

If Hamilton didn't win it it would have felt wrong. This year he became the most successful F1 driver of all time. That is as about as significant an achievement as you can get.11
-
Hamilton - yuk3
-
Next year could be absolute carnage with The Olympics, Euros, Lewis chasing a record breaking 8th World Title and a World T20 that if we won would surely put Eoin Morgan right in contention.1
-
Delighted we didnt get a Ryan Giggs repeat (Henderson) which was the only thing I could see stopping Lewis. As a lot of you know I work closely with him and his team. These awards DO matter to him, because it drains to see so many negative comments across social media, and the abuse he gets sent on his social channels is horrific. It hurts him, and his parents.
He's only human, so tonight I know for a fact that it will make him smile to receive an award from the British public.8 -

It's the perennial debate best performer sportsman or sports personality? We seem to have it every year.
Hamilton is a definite contender for best performer but best personality is another debate.

Imagine having people who have never met you cast judgement on your personality and saying all kinds of things about you on social media.
And i say that for all people in the public eye. My experience tells me what you think somebody is like is not always an accurate representation5 -

Our learned neighbours showing their exceptional intellect again.
Hamilton ‘the token black’ wins.
Yes that’s right, the statistically greatest competitor of all time in his sport and probably one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet described by the scum as a ‘token black’ in a UK public vote for our sportsman of the year.
Seeing as the guy who wrote this can’t even spell surprise properly we perhaps shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s because of attitudes like this that Lewis is continuing to push for greater equality in his sport in particular, which has historically been so unequal in its diversity.

Our greatest sportsman, arguably of all time, wins and out come the critics - so predictable. We should all be proud of him, although seriously we don't deserve him.Well done Lewis - I'm proud of you mate.18

Top man.
I guess that makes sense in Britain in 2020...
Doubt many of his fans pay much attention to it to be honest. I've not watched it for years.
He's a breath of fresh air in the bland media trained sporting world these days and massive respect for him to pick himself up from where he was with his mental health and demons and achieve what he has this year. Very inspirational.
I respect him for the fact that he doesn't need the twee SPOTY to validate his worth and as he says he receives the plaudits from his fans and the boxing world which is enough for him.
I am pleased he has put some of his problems behind him, though.
Understandable from his viewpoint.
Delighted Lewis won.
Precedent set for the team prize then, any team who wins the top division should now automatically be given the award, shouldn't they? All other football teams who have won the award have been given it for multiple trophies (including Liverpool) or remarkable achievements - Man Utd as first English European champs. Leicester for beating the odds.
Hearing that fan moan that she had "missed out" made me want to throw something at the TV. Yes, just four League cups, the three FA cups, the two Champions Leagues and a UEFA cup to celebrate, you poor, long suffering little precious. They wonder why people don't like them?2 -
Well done Lewis1

Sir Lewis soon1

F1 lacks diversity, though in the case of drivers surely the main barrier is financial not racism as it's such a horrendously expensive sport, meaning that there will always be average drivers only there because they bring money with them

But then It's always surprised me the number of times the European Ryder Cup team has won team of the year (5 times), when it's a 2 horse race!1 -

We have a specialism in F1 and work with lots of drivers and teams on their brand partnerships.
Lewis being one.
Also manage a lot of brand partnerships in football (Man City, Real Madrid, Champions League etc), golf, tennis and rugby.
I love sport so it’s something I’m passionate about8 -
Lewis Hamilton is obviously exceptional at what he does, the stats prove it. I just cannot warm to him. I don’t dislike him, but he’s not someone I enjoy listening too nor watching (F1 zzzzz).
Congratulations too him.0 -

I love sport so it’s something I’m passionate aboutI only ask because when I took my then 11 year old to the Canadian Grand Prix last year and I’d booked F1 experience or something , we had a pass to the Paddock for the day on the Friday or Saturday and we were milling around it was really quiet at the end of the day and no punters about and Pierre came by and I asked for a quick photo with my son and he said no he was in a rush (it would have taken 10 seconds ) having had a few beers throughout the day I embarrassed myself and son by saying ‘you’re kidding me , fuck off “
afterwards I presumed he’s under instructions not to stop because if you stop for one then it could be a gazillion but that wasn’t the situation we were in but Pierre is only young .
anyway my son who is more mature and understanding than me holds no grudge and gets the hump when I say I hope he fucks up and crashes 🤷♂️What are the instructions for drivers with fans , are there any ?5 -

All I do know is that F1 drivers are under immense time pressures during a weekend. Literally from Thursday to Sunday every single minute is accounted for.But that’s a proper shame. You can be busy without speaking like that to someone.2 -
Hamilton just became one of the greatest sportsmen, not just in the UK, but the world, with his recent achievements.
His 'personality' is irrelevant. His achievements are exceptional.
A worthy winner.5 -

If you want to be the best then you have to be a bit cold hearted and ruthless
Nothing wrong and doesnt hurt being nice at times.
But that approach to winning is so ingrained into you, you dont have time to develop a nice / nice personality.
Always remember the late Phil Sherwen on "Chasing Legends" (a Documentary about Mark Cavendish and Team Columbia in the Tour de France one year), he was saying how Sprinters are like Boxers, they go in with a fighting attitude because its the nature of the Sport, they dont turn round and say: "Oh I'll do my best and see what happens"... and unfortunately they come across as a bit of a prick doing so2 -
F1 isn't exactly full of warm personalities. Plenty of the drivers come across as arrogant and why wouldn't they be when they take part one of the mostly highly skilled and dangerous sports on earth. When Ford were involved in F1 donkies years ago Johnny Herbert visited the Dagenham plant where my dad worked and all of the people that met him said what an epic bellend he was. Beyond arrogant apparently.
Hamilton isn't someone I can particularly warm to either but as a sportsman he is up there with the very best this country has ever produced.1
