So we now have
Gibbs Injured between 06/08
Youga Injured between 09/11
Basey injured 2010
Wiggins injured 12/15
Page injured 17/20
We're cursed at left back! Chris Powell and Morgan Fox, the only ones to not get long term injured there!

He's actually played the most games for us since Morgan Fox in that position, has recently surpassed Jay Dasilva's number of games2 -
Who was the fullback who got injured on his Charlton debut ..... and never played again?
Was that Gary Poole or someone else?0 -
Looked out of his depth in the Championship. Dropped down to league 1 and looked outstanding. Was much quicker than most players so could always recover to win the ball back.Dazzler21 said:
Was a bit ropey when he came to us, went on loan to Scunny and never wanted to go back, was a transformed player until that injury that got in his head. He saw specialists all over the world... So weird.DamoNorthStand said:
Forgot about Kelly Youga - very good player.Dazzler21 said:Charlton Left backs to not recover from injuries:

Jeez, we really are cursed at left back. So many really good players whose careers got cut short. I remember a game back in the day, forgotten who it was against, but Youga virtually played as a left winger and he was unplayable. Then it all went nipples northwards after an injury. Wiggins and Jacko on that left side during our promotion season were terrific. Then Page with a fleeting glimpse of what he could have been bless him with that screamer from 20 yards. And then dear old Morgan Fox, the butt of many a joke. He wasn’t much but I’d take him now. Beware any left backs that appear on our radar.1

Poole got injured early on but I don't think it was his debut.Oggy Red said:Who was the fullback who got injured on his Charlton debut ..... and never played again?

I think I recall him scoring a screamer at QPR.3 -

Wasn't the late Geoff Scott, red headed lad from Birmingham was it? Played twice.
Edit; surprisingly in the league Poole played 16 scoring once and Rowett 13 scoring once.

Right back and played quite often didn't he? Thought he was a decent replacement for Mills at the time.Henry Irving said:Greg Shields2 -
We were fine in the 80s and 90s with the likes of Reid, Minto and Barness, though we did lose Jamie Stuart for "other" reasons!Dazzler21 said:So we now have

I thought Greg Shields played for us before Danny Mills.Talal said:

Shields was the replacement for Mills and was our RB in the title season. Kishishev then displaced him in the PLJohnfromNorfolk said:

It’s about time LP got Cut a break physically wise, sadly i don’t think we’ll see him in a Charlton shirt again, his body just keeps letting him down.
All the best Lewis.0 -
Yeah, he was a RB. Came down from Scotland if I remember, settled straight into the 1st team and looked very decent and good on the overlap.Talal said:

Then after about 20 matches he fell out with Curbs for some reason ..... and was never seen again in a Charlton shirt.
You don't cross Curbs. Jason Euell might well agree.

What about the other full back around that time, I think he was Mark Reid?
I remember him flattening a referee in, I think it was a boxing day fixture at Carrow road.
He got away with it claiming it was an accident.0 -
Mark Reid came in the season we left The Valley, and was a fixture at left back for the next 5-6 seasons, a really class act. What happened ar Carrow Road was that our players were chasing the ref after he disallowed a goal and he stopped and turned round, Reid ran into him knocking him flying. We on the terraces that day were all in favour of him putting the boot in, but sanity prevailed and he was cleared of any villainy.
My Rangers mate said that Shields, a lifelong Ger, argued his way out of Ibrox as well. Decent player, but a bit awkward by the sound of it.0 -
Cawley confirms he will not be offered a new deal.

Yeah feel sad about that one... Isnt his fault he's so injury proneDoctorCharlton said:Cawley confirms he will not be offered a new deal.
Really hope it works out for him somewhere
Again though, his pittance of a wage can now go some way to trying to keep more important players7 -
I shame because he is a decent player, but I suppose it was inevitable with his injuries. Can't help but have a nagging feeling that he will go somewhere else, get fit and play really well. Wish him luck.

All the best elsewhere Lewis if you're spying on the forum.4

I hope he does, but I worry that he'll struggle to get a contract anywhere at a decent levelSteveKielyCambridge said:I shame because he is a decent player, but I suppose it was inevitable with his injuries. Can’t see anybody offering him a deal unless it’s on a pay as you play basis - which means he isn’t going to get paid. Shame that a promising career is going to end up in very early retirement.killerandflash said:

Was very good left back and great going forward. Such a pity he had those injuries and I wish him all the best.1

Excellent full back, and very sad for him to be let go. I hope he succeeds elsewhere.0

Sad to see him go, I hope he can continue to play, had the making of a really good player. Two memories, his goal against Plymouth and the red card although struggling to remember who against now, took one for the team.0
