Could i ask all those asking for Nathan Jones's head for recommendations for humble pie retailers as I have repeatedly said Gillesphey will cost us a place in the playoffs as his errors will cost ua too many points. Yesterday his header won us points and he had an overall good game.
Long may his concentration and improved performances last and would be delighted to find a quality humble pie vendor ideally in the greenwich/blackheath/charlton area but willing to travel
Last night was the first game I'd been to for a while. A few thoughts:
- Peterborough didn't play on Saturday, so they should have been a bit more refreshed. But we were all over them and should probably have won by more, which is not too shabby fitness-wise. - Really impressed with Coventry in the 'quarterback' role - it makes me so much more confident when we have the ball at the back if he drops in to receive it, because he can then turn and play the ball forward to get something going. - Gillesphey looked a bit iffy at first, but was very solid for the rest of the game. I'm really pleased for him that he got the winner, and I wonder if his reluctance to take the acclaim at the end of the game was because his poor performances have been playing on his mind. Maybe signing McIntyre will spur him on. - Felt like it was an off day for Thierry Small, who needs to get his head up more - Ramsay's ability to wiggle out of tight spots is remarkable - When Docherty's header was deflected down and over the bar I thought "That's it, it's not our night". Gilbert had played the ball down the inside channel for Campbell to cross it, and it was Gilbert's impressive corner that we scored from. I'd definitely be happy to see Gilbert start a game if someone like Berry needs a rest. - We lost something after Godden went off - if we're chasing a goal, taking him off and bringing on Leaburn and Aneke isn't the best way to do it.
I'm still not sure this group is on the same level as our last promotion-winning squads. But huge credit to Nathan and the boys for putting together this run and giving us hope again.

I doubt that, as he's had a run of about four games where he's played well. On the commentary Tel said something about him being a quiet lad being the reason he hung back.
And I agree with whoever said that Gilbert's corner was the best one we've seen in some time, possiby all season. Much more pace on the ball than the floaty ones that never lead anywhere. If he takes them regulary I'm sure some will be over hit, but generally they'll be much more of a threat. BTW, if he was actually aiming at Gillesphey, then it was even better.
So much to like about this side and squad, let alone how we are set up and playing. Our fitness through to 90+x minutes is also helping us no doubt.
The teams around us know we are the form to beat so it won’t be easy but we are proving game in and game out now that we have all the disciplines you need to beat whoever is put in front of you - organisation, solid defending, ability to mix up styles in game (playing through the thirds + long diagonals) and pace threats going forward.
Such a great period in the season for us, let’s help make it last!
All ifs and buts, but if we’d hung on to winning positions away at Barnsley and Blackpool, and found a winner in a game we dominated at home vs Stockport, we’d be 3rd tonight.
That is very Iffy.
And so is this paragraph:
If cafc hadn't mugged Bolton and the Shrewsbury striker hadn't missed a sitter late on when 0-0 then no momentum and we are stranded in mid table as players lose belief and the Charlton crowd and CL do what's in their DNA and moan; TBF all clubs have fan/critics who pile on with the comparisons to animal shit with no constructive criticism.
We have scored many more goals after 80 minutes than we have conceded. Manic Nathan and the players are on the same page.
Because Small on the right and TC on the left are using the width, they are being double marked at times leaving more space in the middle and suddenly Just like magic we are having more shots at goal. Both need to be encouraged even if it doesn't come off.
It was no disrespect to Edwards but that was a good move to switch Thierry and TC back to their natural side against tiring full backs.
NJ at 1-1 late on when it was looking like the Posh hoodoo was alive and kicking: raised both arms to give more effort then did the opposite with his arms going down to indicate, "calm down, calm down "😀
No one wants Charlton to be successful more than Jones as his whole reputation as a manager depends on it after his disappointing spells at Stoke and the Saints.
Just for you Nathan Jones as I stick to science. "🙏🏻 May your God go with you 🙏🏻" Amen.
Great hard grafted result and we should have scored two more. referee was a complete Novice 🤡 Clown. the second penalty was not a penalty a free Kick outside the Box at the most.
When I walked out of the Valley on the 3rd December after losing to Crawley, I genuinely thought the season was over, and it would be 6 more months of league one mid table mediocrity.
What a turnaround!
COYA
And how many on here were saying that Jones had to go?!
I was one and will quite happily eat humble pie for the rest of the season. The turnaround has been incredible and not just the results, we are decent to watch too.
I wasn't. I hate the churn of managers we've had, and I've been desperate to see us get some stability. But I was very quiet on that run of form that lead to the Crawley match, as I didn't have a single argument to defend they guy. But here we are! Happy days.
I was very much thinking like you, albeit I wasn't quiet about some of NJ's more self-defeating public remarks. Anyway, while NJ deserves a lot of credit for turning the form around and finally showing us the type of team he wants us to be, he in turn should be acknowledging the role of someone else who has been key to getting us there...
For years, more than 20 for sure, since the season we missed Scott Parker for the first two months I've a "minor injury" I've been banging on about the need to invest in the medical and fitness side. It seemed to be a minority pre-occupation on here, and indeed in the boardroom; but there's a simple logic at work. What's the point of spending money on good players if they are regularly unavailable? This was something that Methven at least asked publicly; I waited for action to back up the words, but along came Dr Will Abbott. We started the season looking fit. Miles and Chuks were clearly carefully managed back to availability. We lost Edwards due to a criminal assault, and during the bad autumn run it looked as though our jinx was back. Bu Ramsey returned on the optimistic end of the schedule, and now we have a full squad barring Ahadme. I cannot recall the last time we went into February with such a fit squad. And if you doubt the importance of that, just go and check out how things look at Huddersfield right now, where their expensive transfer window signing is one of several key players unavailable.
What's more, in these last two games I can't think of a time when a player went down needing treatment (AMB aside). That's pretty remarkable too. Early yesterday Godden seemed to catch his ankle near the touchline, probably down to that bloody pitch, and Terry on commentary was fretting about him- but he shook it off without treatment. We all fret about the games coming thick and fast, and whether some players need resting. Well based on their fitness, the answer is a clear "no". I find this pretty damn amazing, and it gives us a huge advantage at this stage of the season.
NJ has done a great job but I hope he acknowledges the great job done by Will Abbott in getting our medical and fitness regime into shape.
Don’t laugh but second place is up for grabs. Big games against Wycombe and Wrexham at the end of the season but the way we’re playing, who knows 🤞
Wouldn't say 'up for grabs' but we're definitely not out of that race - we have got some tough away games coming up though so I think play offs is more realistic.
Feared the worst at first, the teams come out to a near empty Valley and started the game in a similar flat way. Jones made a couple of mistakes in first 3 mins, and their lightening striker blitzed past him and Gillesphey early on with ease.
But after about 10-15 mins we settled into the game and seemed to raise it about 3 gears. We were unlucky not to have at least a couple of goals lead by halftime, and when the goal and sending off happened, it seemed like a game over situation.
Fair play to Peterborough, they had what looked a very young team and showed fantastic spirit playing with 10 men. The done the necessary slowing and we didn’t really get to grips with trying to stretch them. I wasn’t sure of the subs, Godden’s movement and in-box awareness seemed much more likely to lead to a late goal than lumping to Chuks and Miles, but we got what we needed from that corner.
For just 6 or 7 thousand in the ground we made a fair old racket at the end. Such a shame the team continue to get so low turnouts, without the freebies I counted just 42 people in my block and the adjacent block, though it was nice to stand and not worry about anyone behind. Just one executive box in use in the ground too so commercially it seems just as bad.
As others have said the team is unrecognisable from a couple of months ago. It’s been an amazing turnaround, transition, whatever you want to call it. It was another good, well worked and deserved victory last night, this is the most we have played as ‘a team’ where everyone knows their role so quite a long time.

Good post.
On your attendance point, a cold Tuesday night in February is what we would expect for a mid-table Division 3 game, which is what we were just a few games ago. Keep up this run and the crowds will swell - as we all know, initiatives around the edges to increase crowd size have a tiny effect, consistently winning matches and building hope of promotion puts bums on seats.

Some good points here but I think Football needs to look at how they can make the best of the current Sky deal with regards to actual fan attendance. Thankfully we only have Barnsley as a home midweek night game left but in future I'd like to see some tinkering around the fixture list if possible. Some consideration should be given to the distance and travel arrangements that fans have to face on these midweek games. If we would have played Orient at home last night the actual attendance would have been over 10000, yes both clubs are in good form but their close proximity would have increased the attendance in any case. I also think we use our Autumn months, where stepping outside your door does not require three layers of winter warmers just to survive the evening, for silly cup games that I can't even remember the names of. And lastly, when using public transport, especially the trains, how many take a look at the forecast and think, we'll if my last Services are cancelled due to the weather then I ain't getting home, it's a consideration, I live in Canterbury, by train I walk back in the door at midnight, by car I'm hoping that the A2/M2 are not having a cone evening but I'm still home at 23.00. Some thought needed by the Football authorities please, but I'm not hopeful.

If it had been a saturday (and the game on TV) I probably would have watched it at home. It was only because parking is possible on an evening match that I decided to go. The TV situation must really be putting people off. A combination of crap weather/Free TV & Greenwich councils war on parking is discouraging attendance. Also I used to use the Loopy train service, until that was binned, so that I could to avoid the parking restrictions.
Im glad I went but Im not sure if I will renew the season ticket next year because Im tempted to miss so many games. I think its different if you meet up with mates and make more of a evening of it.

Is it really what we expect? It seemed like a very sparse Valley to me. Given that we are on a winning streak and playing some really good football I'd like to have seen more fans there? Is it just a Charlton thing caused by years of disappointment and some horribly boring football earlier in the season or is it Sky?
And just to say that is the best any defender has played Small all season #EDUN
Was it ? I thought it was 50/50 as Small won the early rounds as Edun got turned inside out and got a card for a late tackle but our Ex showed determination and bounced back with a spirited display.
I think @PragueAddick is spot on about recovery from injuries and fitness. It is quite a turn around from previous seasons, and I would say that Nathan Jones and his team have turned us into a side that can see out games strongly generally, and not melt and fade away. Would it be appropriate to say that this season we are very much a second half team? I imagine statistics would say that. My brother reckons that getting into play off contention, because essentially they are sportsmen, has galvanised the team more than previously with something now to win, and something now to lose.
Contrary to received wisdom I now regard Birmingham away as a must win, or at least get a point. However a defeat even though it would be a huge drag, would not be a wrist slitter. We have a chance, in this third competitive meeting of the season, to do the double over Birmingham.
When I walked out of the Valley on the 3rd December after losing to Crawley, I genuinely thought the season was over, and it would be 6 more months of league one mid table mediocrity.
