Will we make the playoffs?

  • If Huddersfield get a win tonight at Northampton and Orient get something at Birmingham then I think it’s starting to look quite difficult again. We really need both to lose.

  • That table is shaping up to be a real dog fight between now and the end of the season.

My hunch is a Reading v Charlton play off final.
My moneys on another Charlton v Sunderland playoff final.
    Some weird people on CL.
    I prefer diverse to weird.
Why write Reading off? They played very well v Birmingham on Saturday. Have some quality, and only 3 points behind us.
I've not written Reading off, but I have written Sunderland off.
    Like I said weird.
It was a joke. Lighten up

What feelings did you have in our other successful and unsuccessful playoff seasons?
Last time we were in the play offs I was 100% confident we would go up. In fact I was so confident that travelling up to Doncaster I saw a bunch of Pompey fans travelling up to Sunderland at the service station for the other play off game I quietly chuckled to myself that they were wasting there time making the trip because we were ultimately going to win the play offs, nearly told one of them too!

This time round i'm feeling confident we'll make the play offs and may even surge for a top 2 finish on the basis 3rd to 6th could be quite tight and wondering if Wycombe may drop into the mix but ultimately think it'll be beyond us. Not as confident as the previous play offs though as I feel one key injury could disrupt the entire way we're set up to play.
I've said for a while this season is feeling like the season Bow took over from Karl Robinson. Started alright but playing some not great football,  slump in the middle, before a resurgence (when Bow took over) to get us back in the mix and make the playoffs. But ultimately didn't have enough to go up.

That's how I feel about this one.
I can see what you mean, to me this feels like the first year Bowyer got us in to the play-offs, where we had a skeleton of a team that showed flashes of ability but just lacking one or two in key areas, then obviously he added the next season and we seemed more steely. I hope i'm wrong though, what is beyond doubt however is that Jones has made some unpopular decision and to be completely honest has been proven right, this squad is miles ahead of where we were last season.

ChatGPT backing us strongly, possibly even autos:

    1. Birmingham City – They remain favourites to finish top. Their consistency throughout the season, strong squad depth, and defensive solidity give them the edge to secure the title and automatic promotion.

    2. Wrexham AFC – Their momentum and attacking prowess, combined with a well-managed squad, suggest they will push for automatic promotion. If they maintain their consistency, second place is within reach.

    3. Charlton Athletic – Their current form suggests a late-season surge, which could see them leapfrog several teams into the top three. If they sustain their momentum, they will be a serious playoff contender.

    4. Huddersfield Town – A well-balanced team with experience and tactical depth, they should comfortably finish in the top six. While they might have been automatic promotion contenders earlier, their recent inconsistencies mean they are likely to settle for a playoff spot.

    5. Wycombe Wanderers – They have been solid all season and remain a strong contender for the playoffs. While their form has dipped slightly, their resilience and squad quality should see them secure a top-six place.

    6. Stockport County – Although there are question marks over whether they can maintain their early-season form, they have built enough of a foundation to hang on to a playoff place.

    Just Missing Out:

    • Leyton Orient – Despite a strong push, they may just fall short if Charlton maintain their form.

    • Barnsley – They are a playoff-calibre side, but with Charlton’s resurgence, they may struggle to hold onto a top-six spot.

This places more emphasis on recent form while still accounting for squad strength, consistency, and fixture difficulty. If Charlton continue their rise, they could even push for a higher spot, but at the very least, they now seem well-positioned for a playoff place.

I can't any of this seriously when it's saying Wycombe will drop to 5th

I still dont have massive faith in their new Manager appointment, then again I thought that Birmingham appointing Davies would be questionable.

Nothing like it whatsoever. Bowyer had to make do for the rest of the season with the squad he inherited. Jones has picked this squad. Bowyer only had to make one simple change to start improving the team and that was to stop expecting one player to hold the line upfront on his own. Jones has, after some trial and error, made his changes and got a core team plus squad that can and does win games. Bowyer got a massive boost by THAT Pompey away game and the fan support that followed after that. TBF, I think Charlton punched above its weight on the back of that support to sneak into the play offs when the team wasn’t really ready for it. The current team/squad if and when it gets into the play offs is far better prepared. If there is one factor that still needs some work it’s the fan buy in and replicating the support Bowyer’s team had then. As a fanbase we are not quite there yet. FFS, we’ve still not got consensus on the replacement words for the line ‘and now we’ve got Lee Bowyer’ and so the ‘Allez, Allez’ song just sounds pathetic and unconvincing. We need to sort that out asap so that everyone can join in and mean it when we sing the Reds are going up.
  • Amuses me every week. How have the covered end persisted with the mumble of the managers name in that song?! It’s got worse as it’s gone on! His name is Nathan Jones, it’s not hard!!

You are talking about the same season..
  • A big difference between this squad and the Powell and Bowyer promotion squads is the  lack of both a 20 goal talismanic striker and a high end (at this level) keeper.

Don't think it's out of the picture Godden hits 20. He's on 10 and spent the first half of the season coming off the bench

Ignoring both Huddersfield and Orient for a second… we win our game in hand against Crawley and that puts us one point behind Stockport in 4th.

I think we’ll be ok regardless of results tonight. The only real kick in the nuts would be if Orient get three points somehow - relying on Birmingham taking points off of everyone around us. Even a draw there tonight is fine.

We're four clean sheets short of what we achieved in 2018/19, and six short of 2011/12, with 14-games to play this season, we should be able to achieve that.

The Goalkeepers / Defence aren't doing much wrong this season.

So, basically, we’re not going to make the playoffs….
  • beating Wrexham at Wembley would be the ultimate was to go up.

I think we are gonna meet them in the Play Off semi's though and do them over 2 legs

Sure there are differences and I don't disagree about those differences, fan feeling isn't the same as when Bow took over (although we did struggle to sell tickets for the home leg of the playoff semi) but there are significant similarities not least having ground to make up after a slump, the squad lacking depth and that little bit of quality to make them real promotion squads.
  • Currently watching Northampton vs Barnsley on SkySports+ my word Barnsley are absolutely awful
  • Huddersfield losing 2-0 to Wigan could end up being rather beneficial to us
  • Looks like L’Orient are leading a charmed life. And they’ve had a player sent off

Anyone know when our play off games are likely to be and the final? I’m in Greece 17th May to 24th be gutted to miss it. (We are definitely getting there).

Praying League One final is the Sunday plane lands back in the UK 3am so that’ll be fine, few hours kip then on to Wembley

The link suggests that the League One Final will be on the Sunday, it wont surprise me either, as they usually do it in League level order, either with the Championship going first, or last depending on whether there is a Major Tournament in the summer.
