I'm happy with the win and think we earned it on the balance of chances, but I'm disappointed in how we allowed Cambridge to control the game. Our high press never really got to grips with them and they played around us more easily than Birmingham did.
We've had so little to be happy about this season, I'm going to enjoy these back-to-back victories for now. We need to go on a big run and I don't have much confidence that we can, but at least the team are showing signs of improvement and are bagging some wins.
Leaburn hitting form again. TC enjoying his role. Docherty showing patches of heart/ability. Mitchell & Jones both very good.
Still think Gillesphey is a weak link at the back. And re: our midfield - there were two opportunities to play a forward through on goal and they opted to go sideways instead - we need a more creative-minded player in there.
We have a little bit of momentum, but it feels wobbly and like we could easily slip off the rails again. Sunday is a big game.
I wasn’t able to watch today so can’t comment on the match and am grateful for this post match thread. Having said that and recognising that a wins a win and three points is always welcome I really don’t understand the rose tinted view that’s creeping back here. We’ve been god damned awful all season and in reality for some years now and frankly after supporting Charlton since 1961 my ambitions and hopes are way way above scraping a 2 - 1 home win against Cambridge United and getting all gooey eyed over the hope that something is changing. It’s not and won’t until we see an alignment of the investors, the SMT and the first team manager all working in harmony. Strikes me we don’t have any of that. I’m hopeful that the owners have ambition but I’ve seen nothing in the other two key elements to give me hope we’re moving forward.
Without getting gooey eyed though wearing rose tinted glasses, two wins from the last two games is better than the alternative and, yes, represents a change from preceding weeks. What I find hard to understand is why some feel the need to snuff out any hint of optimism expressed by others.
I think you are confusing optimism with hope. We always hope we will win, but our expectation of winning is undermined by crap performances and results, which we had for three months before last Saturday. There are now some moderate signs of improvement, but not enough to be genuinely optimistic.
Took my boys, and a young Chinese friend of my eldest, whose first ever match it was. He really enjoyed it, despite missing the opener as he was just taking his seat. He thought Jones was our best player, and also liked TC. Shame the atmosphere was quite flat though. When buying their tickets on Monday the area near me in CE J Block was sold out, so they sat further back. Turned out there were plenty of empty seats, which I guess was season ticket holders not turning up.
We need to keep this run going if we’re to increase attendances.
I believe we have scored at least two goals as a result of a Josh Edwards long throw (has there been more?), which is a useful weapon we didn't have in our armoury last season.

Fair enough but it’s not about “snuffing out a hint of optimism in others” it’s all about facing up to a reality. Before the Northampton game the mood and expectations on this forum were about as low as we’ve seen. Whoop de do, we’ve had two games and two wins where the football was acceptable and not the complete tripe previously served up. An improvement ? Certainly but that doesn’t detract from the fact that CAFC are at our very best mediocre and I’d say that goes for the whole football club not just the first eleven. Once we fall into getting optimistic about a 2 - 1 home win against the second worse defence in the league, incidentally the worst being Northampton then we’re starting to accept that mediocrity and Methvens job is done. Think on this. We’re approaching our next game thinking it’s going to be mightily tough and any kind of result will be a good one. This is against and I don’t mean this in a disparaging way against Wycombe Wanderers. Just my opinion but for me Jones has proved his preferred style of football is totally unacceptable. He’s been forced (by the owners, fans ?) to try something else. It’s how we should have been playing from the start. His arrogance and stubbornness have virtually killed off our season. I don’t believe Jones has a good working relationship with Scott. In fact I think there is a lot of friction. We won’t achieve much without every part of the club pulling together. I don’t see we’re close to that.
We scored in the first 30 seconds yesterday. Scored 7 goals in 2. 1 conceded in 4 games. People complained last year that we conceded too many - now we have one of the best defenses in the league. People complained that we didn't score in the first half - complained we don't score enough - then when we do they find something else to complain about.
Wycombe are top of the league and in fantastic form, so yes, playing the top team in the league is always going to be tough?
Honestly the relentless negativity on here is something else.
Question mark over Leaburns goal coming from a foul throw ?
Already covered in the match thread. Perfectly legal.
Although you do seem to want to find a reason to give the two points back to the EFL. Very kind of you this time of year.
Re the discussion on the match thread about foul throws, I can honestly say that I didn’t realise you could have your feet on the pitch, as long as your heels were touching the line. Always thought both had to be behind the line for some reason.
But of course it’s consistent with the ball having to be just touching the line, so, obvious really.
Main disappointment was that the crowd didn’t take the opportunity to update our version of ‘Last Christmas’. Previous recipients of our hearts (from memory) include Lyle Taylor, Jayden Stockley and Miles Leaburn. This year I was hoping for Danny Hylton as that scans very well. I suppose we will have to hope that he is still playing for us on Boxing Day next year……
Really dont want to be negative, but their keeper should have stopped both of our goals, had that been AMB we would have been spitting feathers.Their goal was shambolic for us,our 2 attempts to win the ball in midfield before they scored bore resemblance to a key stone cops movie. However ,we take what we are given,3 points, not the greatest game, but we shaded it,although they did for 15-20 minutes in the second half play some really good one touch football.Wycombe will be a different matter, but we can match these top teams as we have shown ,and I would not be surprised if we won this.
looks like charlton v crawley was a turning point for them 3 Losses for crawley since mansfield also used their fixture against us to "reset" as theylike us,have won both games since the 0-0 draw at the alley
When we sacked Appleton we had 30 points from 28 games.
We have 30 points from 21 games this season.
Oh goodie. Dunno what you are on but again today that was unacceptable. Very poor indeed. We won but I got no pleasure out of that. Anyone who thinks that's good enough has low standards.
It was perfectly acceptable. A solid performance apart from their goal and one shot hitting the post. We were pretty comfortable and I never thought they looked like equalising. Even promotion winning teams win plenty of tight games. We certainly looked top half yesterday, rather than heading downwards.
Consecutive wins is obviously very welcome but ultimately I’m left feeling a bit flat at the end of that. 2-1 at home to a terrible team doesn’t fill me with hope for the next few games. I don’t think Wycombe will be too concerned at the prospect of playing us.
They genuinely weren’t that bad?
They’ve lost 8 out of 11 away from home - that’s what I meant by a terrible team. The fact that we hung on for a 2-1 win tells you something about us, doesn’t it?
They've scored 8 away and conceded 22 I think in 11 games. So "on average" they lose 2-1 as they did yesterday.
For a home Boxing Day game (flagship fixture) I thought the crowd was particularly disappointing and the atmosphere as flat as I can remember.
It would help if public transport was available for those that don't live in London. I watched the game on stream and those that bothered to go couldn't have made less noise.
On commentary you could here every player shouting something that rarely happens.

Well you would not be able to stick me in the “relentless negative” camp on here when it comes to the football side at least, but given what happened in the second half, it’s reasonable to be concerned about a few things. Of course its great to apparently continue where we left off with our first half performance but the first part of the second half was borderline pathetic, and a continuation of the “October- November Charlton” as Greg put it on commentary. Do you think Wrexham, two goals up would allow the Cambridge player to skip through them as Gillesphey and Docherty did? Of course not, because Wrexham have Dobbo. What’s more Miles Leaburn, as Brownie said, is still recovering from his injury. Its great that he’s improving. It’s not great that Jones kept him on too long because he knows that the obvious replacement isn’t going to to do the job. It was also not great that Jones didn’t make any subs until it was almost over, when we have two more games in the next 6 days. It doesnt make any sense. Managers who are on their game, think back to Curbs for years, SCP in the promotion season, and Bow until the injuries made the wheels come off, do things that make sense to the average fan. Jones does too many weird things. Yes we have picked up some points. But I’m not going to be optimistic until I see the most senior players being consistent for the whole game, until I see a clear game plan, consistently applied, a balanced squad with a good bench ( as opposed to 3 out and out strikers, only one of whom regularly scores), and the same consistency of information to fans about injuries that even the shower down the road manage to provide.
All I can say about the lack of subs is that I'm expecting 4 or 5 changes to the team on Sunday. Which 1) will be a shame as you shouldn't change a winning team, 2) will be worse than the starting 11 from the past 2 games and 3) if not then the players will be dead on their feet after 60 mins.

Yep I agree, back in my day if you had a corner the ball had to be inside the quadrant! I watched quite a few games over the last few days and it now seems that if the ball is 'casting a shadow' on the outside of the quadrant line then it's legal! What a stupid rule that is!!

The game was much simpler back then. Offside actually meant daylight between the striker and the last defender. Nowadays you can have a goal ruled out in the prem for a bollock being ahead of the last man. Ridiculous

As is the ridiculous unfounded optimism
Is it ridiculous to not write the season of in November and now think, given our proximity to 6th after essentially playing poorly for nearly half a season against almost all of the teams in the League, good or bad, that any improvement on that might bring us into contention? Where I'm at is that I think it's possible is all. If others think that puts me in the rose tinted glasses ridiculously optimistic band of supporters who think all is well with the club, I guess I'll have to live with it, but I know it doesn't.

Not sure that they all will. It was a fairly low energy performance against Cambridge, and we coasted for much of it. One or two players might need resting (maybe Miles, post injury?), but really it’s just like a regular Saturday/Tuesday thing.
It wasn’t really all that long ago that they used to play Christmas Day/Boxing Day, home and away against the same club. I wonder what the attendances were like for the Xmas Day matches?
I think the best way to go about it nowadays with so many subs is to start them and swap them when and if they tire. You do need to use the squad though in this period.
Can't see Leaburn playing all of the games so very much hope Aneke is back to at least take some of the strain for some minutes as we will be seriously weaker the moment we have to put Ahadme back in the starting 11.
