Pleased with the result and the endeavour in the first half, but second half wasn't great and a little too much of the mehball we've seen a little too much of this season. Wasn't really hanging on in my book, but we have mistakes on our locker and thankfully we kept it tight enough for all 3 points. All that mattered today was the result, so we keep the very lofty (and probably quite unlikely) dream of 6th place alive. To give ourselves the best chance, we need to go on a run - we have methods to diffuse the better sides and now can start to find goals against the lesser sides. As I've said elsewhere, I'll forgive all the unattractive football if that ever elusive 6th place remains in reach come the last few months of the season.
NJ hasn't won me back yet - the prickliness towards any "unfair" criticism remains somewhat grating, and the decision to not make any substitutions until very late was odd. If he turns this into a run over the 7-8 games and brings in a couple of players that fix some of our more glaring attacking deficiencies, then he'll be getting further away from my assessment that we should get rid. I think he and and squad should have that playoff place as the carrot to chase, but we'll see how we go.
Few players still today not showing enough consistency, but results are all that matter. Wycombe should test the character again - a point would be nice as a minimum.
This forum never changes. You dare to suggest that a performance wasn’t great and is just a load of ‘some people are never happy, I feel sorry for you’.
God forbid that there should ever be any nuance.
I feel the same in reverse when we suffer a loss. Never any nuance.
I wasn’t able to watch today so can’t comment on the match and am grateful for this post match thread. Having said that and recognising that a wins a win and three points is always welcome I really don’t understand the rose tinted view that’s creeping back here. We’ve been god damned awful all season and in reality for some years now and frankly after supporting Charlton since 1961 my ambitions and hopes are way way above scraping a 2 - 1 home win against Cambridge United and getting all gooey eyed over the hope that something is changing. It’s not and won’t until we see an alignment of the investors, the SMT and the first team manager all working in harmony. Strikes me we don’t have any of that. I’m hopeful that the owners have ambition but I’ve seen nothing in the other two key elements to give me hope we’re moving forward.

There’s no nuance in saying we were holding on which is just blatantly untrue

Agreed. Just because you win, it doesn't mean you can't criticise the performance.
And on the flip side, there are games we've lost where we've played well. Sunderland away at the start of the 18/19 season left me feeling very positive for the season, despite us losing.
Unable to watch today, so can’t give an opinion on the performance, but going by the match thread it would seem that we were once again rather lucky to get the three points. First half sounded good, and we all expected a re-run of Northampton… not to be though. Really looking forward to the Wycombe game, should be a good test to see if this is just a flash in the pan, or a real change in fortunes. We shall see…🙏
My little view for what it's worth. At half time I thought "I have no complaints about that at all", thought the first half was very good, we were very threatening going forward at pace and I thought that they had mistakes at the back. Morrison is a thug. Second half a bit different and our midfield disappeared for a while, but we got back into it. Docherty ver good again I thought.
Back to back wins was important after our very poor run, the Wycombe game will be a litmus test to see where we are. Getting any sort of result will point to a corner having been turned.
Consecutive wins is obviously very welcome but ultimately I’m left feeling a bit flat at the end of that. 2-1 at home to a terrible team doesn’t fill me with hope for the next few games. I don’t think Wycombe will be too concerned at the prospect of playing us.
They genuinely weren’t that bad?
They’ve lost 8 out of 11 away from home - that’s what I meant by a terrible team. The fact that we hung on for a 2-1 win tells you something about us, doesn’t it?
Not really to be honest.
We battered then in the first half. Then old habits and fragilities kicked in and we became nervous and played on the back foot.
We had our chances in the second half to make it more comfortable as well as cambridges opportunities.
We hung on relatively comfortably in the end.
not great but job done
Battered them? Can't remember their keeper having to make a save all game. Some may think my comments negative after a win and I accept that but at no point were we even close to battering them.
You must have a dodgy memory. We had better chances for 3-1 than they did 2-2 but for a couple of good saves from their bloke.
Surely the better chances would have been for 3-0 not 3-1 as he certainly didn't have a save to make second half, closest we came was a deflected Small shot that squirmed past the post.
Edit - Apologies, remember now a long range Docherty effort he had to save.
He made two good saves from Luke Berry as well that you’ve forgotten about, both came after the Cambridge goal. Docherty’s effort was before their goal and would’ve been 3-0.
They didn’t have another shot on target the rest of the game.
I can't remember either of the saves from Berry. I'm sure I was there too. Maybe I wasn't after all 🤔
I think it's best you don't go anymore then. Plain as day that their keeper made a good save from Berry & held onto a couple of long range efforts from Doc & Berry (?). Then again I had a good view on the sofa about 10ft away from my 49 inch tv.
It was a great save, Berry got his foot right through it.
Good first half against a very poor Cambridge side , second half apart for 15-20 minutes when they scored and we made them look like Real Madrid , thought we looked comfortable and for once I wasn’t worried they would equalise, onto Wycombe COYR
2 wins on the bounce, an aggregate scoreline of 7-1 and all people can do is complain!
My suggestion to those is get a new hobby!
So you can sit in The Valley all on your own. Enjoy that experience. 🙄
Better than sitting with a few thousand people that only moan even when we win! Some wins are ugly (Today) some are fantastic and we smash teams (Saturday) but people who say they take "zero enjoyment" from us winning need to seriously re-assess their life choices

I think Shooters that it's not so much rose tinted glasses, more perhaps the supporters getting what they have been calling for all season, a more attacking style of play, this gives people some hope that perhaps the season is not lost. Today's game was eventually tighter than it should have been because Charlton did not show the same intensity at the start of the second half, Cambridge had a really good twenty minutes and we could have lost the lead, mostly down to us not holding onto the ball and not using the easy pass. I don't think anyone is going overboard and Wycombe will be a real test but I'm hopeful we can give them a game, I wouldn't have said that after the Crawley game.
The first half was good. We played well and scored twice. They barely had anything to say. Due to some poor defending on our part, they got back into the game, and it always gets tough when the opponent starts to believe. We managed to see it through, and a win is a win. Now looking forward to the Wycombe game which will be a totally different game

Without getting gooey eyed though wearing rose tinted glasses, two wins from the last two games is better than the alternative and, yes, represents a change from preceding weeks. What I find hard to understand is why some feel the need to snuff out any hint of optimism expressed by others.
Frustrating seeing Jones urging Mitchell to move up as Cambridge attacked but the plonker stayed back and played them onside. 2 of them as well and scored. Put us under pressure and surely they must practice that situation in training.

Just pointing out they hit the post. So they had a better chance than we did for 2-2 rather than than 3-1. Overall a lower quality game, few chances. Minor credit to winners - 3 points is more important.
But… their keeper redeemed himself with a couple of good saves in the second half. Take the keeper out of the game and we would have scored twice; take AMB out and they still would have hit the post and not scored

And do you remember when their No 4 dummied Jones and ran 600 yds up the pitch? What was Jones thinking?!? Stick him in the stocks. And give him a wedgy while you’re at it. Yeah. Git.
Ffs. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Let that frustration fly back to the universe on the wind, on gold covered wings. And before it leaves our solar system, just remind it of this.

Back-to-back wins and no league defeat in 4. Plenty of Wycombe fans will be thinking "we're playing them at just the wrong time". We'd feel the same if the positions were reversed
Wycombe haven't lost in months. Their run has to come to an end sometime & we usually play better against the top teams.
Have you two got some kind of weird Christmas family body swap thing going on? It's unusual for Golfie to be the positive one here.
Happy with the 3 points, not happy with the performance. That's how I see it.
The positives:
- We won (and could have scored 3 or 4) - Miles and TC have scored in back to back games - No injuries
The negatives:
- they're a pants team, so we should have been out of sight - we conceded the lions share of possession, and looked less comfortable on the ball than them - We held on a bit towards the end
Make no mistake, they're a diabolical side. There's a reason they've been in a relegation scrap the last couple of seasons. They seriously lack quality and are on a tight budget from what I've heard. I expect us to beat sides who we have a lot more of a budget than at home.
2 wins out of the mini 5 so far, if we get 7 or 9 points from the next 3, then Jones can give some back a bit. Until then, we still haven't done much and will have just stayed put around mid-table.
It's not as extreme as some people make out. We all watched a game of football, we can all make our own judgment. If you think that was a good performance and a well earned 3 points, fine, if you think the opposite, that's also fine. None of it makes a difference in the grand scheme. It's just a discussion. You'd be very sadistic to support a club as pants as ours for years just to try and be 'right' on a football forum.
Looking forward to the real test against Wycombe on Sunday, win that and we can start looking up rather than down imo, as they're actually a good side, unlike the last few bunch of teams we have played.
A decentish performance for 75 mins. The missing 15 after half time is a bit of a worry, but overall it was reasonably good. No way were we hanging on at the end, we were in the ascendancy. We might have been though had their woodwork-hitting-shot been a fraction more accurate. Thought Jones was a beast at the back and Campbell proved a handful up front. Three points with no bookings or injuries; overall I'm happy with the afternoon's show. Still plenty to work on though.
Won't dwell too much but Berry is such a luxury player. Is he a player we are equipped to accommodate? I'm not so sure. Good in patches, but when the Cambridge storm came he was nowhere to be seen. Like I say, I'm not so sure we've got enough in the tank to let someone stroll about when all around is caving in. Thought Edwards was excellent.

Happy with 3 points, unhappy with where we find ourselves in general.
That's me, it's up to NJ and the lads to change my opinion.
