I wasn’t able to watch today so can’t comment on the match and am grateful for this post match thread. Having said that and recognising that a wins a win and three points is always welcome I really don’t understand the rose tinted view that’s creeping back here. We’ve been god damned awful all season and in reality for some years now and frankly after supporting Charlton since 1961 my ambitions and hopes are way way above scraping a 2 - 1 home win against Cambridge United and getting all gooey eyed over the hope that something is changing. It’s not and won’t until we see an alignment of the investors, the SMT and the first team manager all working in harmony. Strikes me we don’t have any of that. I’m hopeful that the owners have ambition but I’ve seen nothing in the other two key elements to give me hope we’re moving forward.
Without getting gooey eyed though wearing rose tinted glasses, two wins from the last two games is better than the alternative and, yes, represents a change from preceding weeks. What I find hard to understand is why some feel the need to snuff out any hint of optimism expressed by others.
Fair enough but it’s not about “snuffing out a hint of optimism in others” it’s all about facing up to a reality. Before the Northampton game the mood and expectations on this forum were about as low as we’ve seen. Whoop de do, we’ve had two games and two wins where the football was acceptable and not the complete tripe previously served up. An improvement ? Certainly but that doesn’t detract from the fact that CAFC are at our very best mediocre and I’d say that goes for the whole football club not just the first eleven. Once we fall into getting optimistic about a 2 - 1 home win against the second worse defence in the league, incidentally the worst being Northampton then we’re starting to accept that mediocrity and Methvens job is done. Think on this. We’re approaching our next game thinking it’s going to be mightily tough and any kind of result will be a good one. This is against and I don’t mean this in a disparaging way against Wycombe Wanderers. Just my opinion but for me Jones has proved his preferred style of football is totally unacceptable. He’s been forced (by the owners, fans ?) to try something else. It’s how we should have been playing from the start. His arrogance and stubbornness have virtually killed off our season. I don’t believe Jones has a good working relationship with Scott. In fact I think there is a lot of friction. We won’t achieve much without every part of the club pulling together. I don’t see we’re close to that.
We scored in the first 30 seconds yesterday. Scored 7 goals in 2. 1 conceded in 4 games. People complained last year that we conceded too many - now we have one of the best defenses in the league. People complained that we didn't score in the first half - complained we don't score enough - then when we do they find something else to complain about.
Wycombe are top of the league and in fantastic form, so yes, playing the top team in the league is always going to be tough?
Honestly the relentless negativity on here is something else.
As is the ridiculous unfounded optimism
It's not unfounded you lemon. 8 points from 12. We need to keep it up and I don't see anyone saying we are the finished article or speaking of automatics or anything. The original point you responded to is spot on - you're just snuffing out any form of optimism.
Ok so you disagree with my take on things. That’s fine but why the insult ? Give your head a wobble mate.
We won, but my god we need a midfielder who can carry the ball (forwards). No creativity. We don't have a midfielder who can beat a man and create something. Coventry nearly always passes square or backwards, even when there is a great option by taking a chance on moving it forward. Its so frustrating. They might have lost, but i thought Cambridge, just like Crawley were better on the ball than us. Personally, I don't think Nathan Jones has much idea at all.
We were up to some shithousery, as Braziliance mentioned , not that I’m keen on it but it’s part of the game but I’m sure when all our players are down it’s genuine injuries but the oppo all feign it . we gotta get involved in the dark arts just as it happens to us

Everybody does it to a degree, par for the course. However, I still say I'd be fking embarrassed if we went to the lengths Blackpool did. That was utterly, utterly taking the piss.

Still makes me "raging" when I think about that 😜
How many times did Morrison throw himself / drop to the ground trying to win free kicks?
It's not a hanging offence but we all agreed it was Gillesphey who missed the first tackle for their goal but I said it was Berry who missed the 2nd tackle before the ball was passed wide but I noticed another poster said Doherty, and even Blucher wasn't certain it was Doherty.
To save me watching it again what is the consensus ?
Watching the highlights programmes on the television yesterday it felt to me that there were more empty spaces to be seen in stadiums across the land. Maybe that was because people have sky television. Or because fixtures yesterday were awkward for those who have arrangements over this holiday period. I know for certain that seven season ticket holders around me weren’t there, but I do know they will be counted in the numbers posted in the attendance. It wasn’t a runaway one yesterday, but getting a win is excellent. If we can only drop eleven points from all our remaining matches I am pretty sure we will get automatic promotion.
Boxing Day used to be one of the best football days of the season, but family commitments and lack of transport options make it tricky. Much prefer New Years Day for a home match as there's little else going on that day
i know i've banged on about it a bit but the move to 3pm from 12 is not good - that, the fact it was on tv, low key opposition and that we've been hard to watch this season and u end up with a poor crowd - guess we should be thankful we weren't one of the 8pm kick offs
TC giving it to the away fans after his goal was the highlight for me. He’s a shy guy so that shows he’s got confidence on the pitch, long may it continue!
For a home Boxing Day game (flagship fixture) I thought the crowd was particularly disappointing and the atmosphere as flat as I can remember.
The last few seasons have done irreparable damage in my opinion. Miles off being a competitive promotion candidate, playing in an awful league, and all of our neighbours having relative success.

The first tackle it can happen, the second tackle you clatter into the man to take away the potential of being exposed.
Didn’t go to this or the Northampton game, so won’t offer an opinion on either of those games.
I think the whole winning two yet still complaining just stems from years of consistent crap that we’ve been served up. We’ve had little mini revivals or mini bouts of form under Adkins, Jackson, Garner, Holden and Appleton
as good a win as Northampton was, I genuinely felt very little joy when I heard the scoreline, and was equally as nonplussed when I heard we had taken a 2 goal lead y’day. I, as I am sure many of you have tried to be positive numerous times over the last 4/5 years, but until we start playing good football, consistently, I’m pretty much done with actively getting behind this team.
i understand that may be very negative to some, but how many odd wins/handful of okay performances have we seen in recent years, that never sustains itself
I unfortunately don’t see anything about this current bunch that suggests they are the group of players to buck that trend. I don’t have the stats to hand, so could be wrong, but it seems like it’s a tighter league this year, and therefore reflects that we are still within touching distance of the playoffs
Maybe it’s about to turn, and I’ll have to take back the above, but I do foresee yet another mid table finish and the tired old debates again this summer about who we keep, and who would be better if they just had better players around them etc
The thing I always go back to is that consistency. Do we look at our players and think they are capable of putting in consistently decent performances. Berry has a few goals this season to be fair to him, but he’s the type of player that can go missing for a few games at a time. Karoy Anderson, works hard, some games he seems to be able to win the ball more than others, but there’s no consistency to it. You can probably apply this to pretty much every player in the squad, bar some of the really poor like Alan Campbell or Ahadme. There are moments, but individually and collectively, they are never sustained, and because it’s been like this since Bowyer left (imo), it’s very boring
From reading all the posts it reassures me that my view of the team is still confused. On paper we have the spine of a good team, with Jones, Coventry, Leaburn etc. Yet all season the performances just haven't clicked. But no-one is steam rollering us either, so we must be close. Like others I think we need a creative midfielder in January, but also think Ramsays return will be crucial for our balance and attacking play. I honestly think he will play top level football eventually so we need him playing. Can NJ get it to all work, possibly. He has always struck me as polarising, a boss you either massively buy into or think is a bit of a joke. Let's hope this lot do buy into it from now on, as maybe we can go on a run now. Yes maybe I've had one too many at Xmas, but it's good to dream.....
When you look at the table, we are right in the play off mix now. A couple of games ago we were looking at it as possible but unlikely. Then 6th place had to be our goal but after just a few games 5th has come into play too. It probably says a lot about the league but you can go down quite far in the table and see teams that won't have given up on the play offs. What has happened to Peterborough though? I thought they would be higher than they are.

feels to me like we are at a cross roads. I think the Wycombe game is huge. should we win, or even draw with a good performance, we have a little platform going into Crawley away, a big game at home to reading. if, and in dreaming here we could get 7 points from those next 3, we would be well and truly in the mix for the latter part of January m, a few decent loan signings in January and who knows.

Great post Cabbles, and as much as he got criticism, Charlie alluded to the fact that the squad needed adding to and some need to leave. I think most people on here have stated that they'd be happy being in or around the play off places at the half way mark, then add what is needed. For me it's a right sided midfielder who can take on a defender and cross the ball, we could then allow Small to go to his natural left side. We also need an experienced goal keeper, get those and we may see a better second half to the season.

Well you would not be able to stick me in the “relentless negative” camp on here when it comes to the football side at least, but given what happened in the second half, it’s reasonable to be concerned about a few things. Of course its great to apparently continue where we left off with our first half performance but the first part of the second half was borderline pathetic, and a continuation of the “October- November Charlton” as Greg put it on commentary. Do you think Wrexham, two goals up would allow the Cambridge player to skip through them as Gillesphey and Docherty did? Of course not, because Wrexham have Dobbo. What’s more Miles Leaburn, as Brownie said, is still recovering from his injury. Its great that he’s improving. It’s not great that Jones kept him on too long because he knows that the obvious replacement isn’t going to to do the job. It was also not great that Jones didn’t make any subs until it was almost over, when we have two more games in the next 6 days. It doesnt make any sense. Managers who are on their game, think back to Curbs for years, SCP in the promotion season, and Bow until the injuries made the wheels come off, do things that make sense to the average fan. Jones does too many weird things. Yes we have picked up some points. But I’m not going to be optimistic until I see the most senior players being consistent for the whole game, until I see a clear game plan, consistently applied, a balanced squad with a good bench ( as opposed to 3 out and out strikers, only one of whom regularly scores), and the same consistency of information to fans about injuries that even the shower down the road manage to provide.
Back to back wins! Happy with the 6 points so far from this hectic period of games.
Really wanted to see some continuity in the shape / tactical perspective following Northampton. Thierry continued to advance down the right, Berry looked to join the forward / run beyond again, however TC wasn’t occupying the wide left position in the first half. In fact, there were many times he popped up on the right.
We addressed it at half time by sending Edwards further forward but that coincided with Cambridge’s half time change of shape. Their change led to Gillesphy being dragged into midfield to follow his man, he and Edwards were then both out of position at the same time. They moved the ball well to exploit the openings.
We had a few stabs at adjusting before settling on one idea and nullifying their adjustments after 10/15 mins. 1) Edwards dropped back again, Gillesphy continued to follow in. 2) Doc rolled out left to cover which left the midfield exposed to a 4 v 2. 3) finally Gillesphy stayed, Doc picked up who Gillesphy was following, TC dropped in to help pick up Korey Smith and that was pretty much that for the rest of the game.
It's not a hanging offence but we all agreed it was Gillesphey who missed the first tackle for their goal but I said it was Berry who missed the 2nd tackle before the ball was passed wide but I noticed another poster said Doherty, and even Blucher wasn't certain it was Doherty.

I will try again.
Was it Greg Docherty ✅or Luke Berry✅ who missed the 2nd tackle for their goal ?
Answer: After watching it again on my phone it appears to be Docherty ✅
Wasn't ✅ Wasnt ❌ Oh, you did that on purpose you funny man.

One goal conceded in four games. How many times did we do that last year when we had Dobbo.
Also Wrexham WERE ahead against Cambridge very recently.
This thread is absolutely baffling. Didn’t think we played badly at all save for a slow start to the 2nd half. Could’ve & Should’ve made it 3-1 but a comfortable home win

It might make sense to NJ if he's already decided that he will mix it up next game and start with say Ahadme and Godden. He may then revert to Leaburn and TC against Crawley which he might be viewing as a definitely winnable game where we should pick up three points. Leaburn, TC etc can't play all three and then Reading too so he may have already decided how he will utilise his squad, barring any injuries arising. Plus, bizarrely, he may have assessed the strenghts and weaknesses of our opponents and choose a team accordingly.

Yeah agree with crowd. Couldn't decide if the early goal killed the "jeopardy", low crowd gave no atmosphere, expectation was to win so no-one was fussed, etc plus all above., but it is repairable .....long term.

One goal conceded in four games. How many times did we do that last year when we had DobboHector & Thomas.
2 lols seems harsh when your post isn't too wide of the mark I'd say.
It's no secret that Coventry has a hole in his game, and it's his creativity. I would say that's where we need to bring someone in to do that though, rather than him doing it himself as he does offer quite a lot.
I also thought Cambridge were better on the ball, just like Crawley, and if you check the statistics, they don't lie. Both of them had better pass accuracy, more passes and more possession. Pretty difficult to ignore.
People will of course say stats don't matter as long as you win, which was the phrase used at the start of the season before it unravelled. You keep the ball more, and don't waste it, it's less likely you concede. Isn't rocket science. Our lanes were way too open at times yesterday, and we needed someone at times to anticipate some of their ambitious passing.

we gotta get involved in the dark arts just as it happens to us
Still makes me "raging" when I think about that 😜
To save me watching it again what is the consensus ?
Maybe it was "Paul Kanchelskis"? Or "John Humphries"?
On to Wycombe.
Somehow in touching distance of the playoffs
I will try again.
Was it Greg Docherty ✅or Luke Berry✅ who missed the 2nd tackle for their goal ?
Answer: After watching it again on my phone it appears to be Docherty ✅
Wasn't ✅
Wasnt ❌ Oh, you did that on purpose you funny man.
Also Wrexham WERE ahead against Cambridge very recently.
They drew 2 all in the end.
