Look at Peterborough United. They have a tiny budget compared to ours but their scouting system is fantastic. Every season they seem to find a player or two from nowhere who scores goals for fun and they play some beautiful football at times.
Ivan Toney , Epohron Mason Clarke , Jack Marriot , Sammi Smodicks , Siriki Dembele , Ronnie Edwards and now they have Kwame Poku who has ten goals already this season and scored at hatrick today in a 6-1 win.

Sure they all have to move on ( for massive profits) in time but their fans get to see some lovely football.

Why cant' we even come close to doing that ?
    Shelvey
    Gomes
    Aribo
    Lookman
    Pope
    Konsa
But we sell them for a quick buck.
The last one of those was Konsa and that was over six years ago and most of those i mentioned for Peterborough were not Academy players , they were scouted from lower leagues. That's really what i was implying.
  • The jones post match interviews always seem to say the same thing - “we need to be better”. But why aren’t we?
    Because we’re worse.

@Hartleypete - What specifically have the owners done wrong then, mate?
Let our best 3 players leave and not replaced them.
Pretty sure that was more down to Jones and the individual players?
  • we need more arm waving from the dugout, definitely a weakness in recent games
  • Anyone who watches that shit week in and week out has my total admiration, although i also question their sanity
  • Did some much needed decorating today to avoid the disappointment, when we get walloped by one of the top 6, that will be the time CM and his merry men will swing the axe, sadly as like everyone who wanted to see a massive change!

And that’s what I got from Charlie’s podcast. He did say on that they would get their chance to play 1st team football and a move that would kick the careers off earlier than others.
Couple that with our first team, we have a formula to stay in the 3rd tier.
One of my friends talked to him at the end of last season and he was impressed with his banter. I did point out to my friend the Netflix series and the fact his past ain’t as great as his talk suggests. Another posh bloke who talked his way into a career.

I see the mighty Southend lost at home to Yeovil today.so not such a great win last week.I confess that for the first time today I looked at the bottom of the league and was pleased when crawley in 21st position didn't win even though they were playing promotion hopefuls huddersfield.

It will take a big transfer window to get this team back on track in January. But 1 The board won’t spend the money,
2 We will be out of the running for even being near a play off spot,
I have little confidence in the board or management structure and the constant excuses after each game when we get beaten. Very disappointing times at the moment.

How far have we fallen? Last week we filled the ground just in case a Hollywood A lister might turn up. That is not the behaviour of fans who aspire to be back in the prem. My grandsons are excited because we are playing Bromley on Tuesday. FFS

  • Every game I see,the opposition have players who i say to myself,"He looks good",the player is usually someone Ive never heard of.Often these guys run the show for their team and cause us problems. What is up with our scouting system,we have paid good money for players and no doubt good wages, for players who will never ever improve this team.We want players who are desperate to improve, not players on their way down, who have played higher league football and are probably financially stable.Dont mind the odd 30 year old,but you need pace, and we just do not have it(other than Tyrece). There is not one player in our side, that if I was the opposing manager,I would be scared of. we are brushed off the ball, easily forced back, weak in the air and seemingly devoid of any sort of guile to cause problems. This is a very worrying time.

Because they dont give the manager full autonomy over who he signs. I bet all those players you mentioned didn't once play for the manager in situ at the time.

Jones talked about injuries but many of them realistically don’t improve that team.

He said 10 players but mentioned Edun who despite not really being able to play was on the bench. He’s our 3rd choice LB/a back up CM.

Mannion isn’t going to create or score goals.

Watson is an average at best L1 player.

Aneke, a miss yes but only capable of playing 30 minutes. Doesn’t improve us in the first 60, and Jones admitted we weren’t good enough in the first half.

Turned out Anderson had an injury. Might have been better than Allan Campbell or Docherty, but Jones chose to sign them this summer.

TC’s pace is a miss, but Jones chose not to sign another winger, that’s on him. Unless you count Dixon, who couldn’t make the bench ahead of Hylton, despite Ahadme being back.

Dan Potts probably doesn’t start ahead of Gillesphey, but neither are starters is L Jones is fit.

Kanu would no doubt be in the squad, but Leaburn and Godden on paper at least is our best front two. Either way a different striker doesn’t get the FBs an midfield playing better football, other than Kanu being the best at chasing lost causes.

Jones and Ramsay were no doubt missed.
    This.

You can bang on about injuries until doomsday but the reality is we are only really missing Ramsay, Jones & Campbell.
  • Personally, I’m leaning towards the view that we’ve got to the stage where we’ve seen enough non-wins, ie draws and losses, compared to wins to reach a conclusion that he’s probably more of a good coach but not necessarily a good Manager that knows how to pick a team to beat the opposition, but hey what do I know ?

Please, not this old bollocks again.

Totally fed up listening to football fans with no idea about how a business works just demanding more money gets spent. As if that's a guarantee for success.

I wrote a lot on the player marks thread so going to paste some here. Then I just ranted for a while.

    A. M-B: 5 Ropey with crosses and coming off his line. Death, taxes, and AMB. Bless.

Z.MITCHELL: 4 - it's hard to say he did a lot wrong that isn't covered by "this is his first league start at RB, and like his fourth start in League One total." A promising player, but lacks the posotional awareness for RB and doesn't have the pure athleticism of a Konsa or Gomez to make up for it.

COVENTRY: 5 - Not his day, I worry he's struggling with two holding midfielders. He and Taylor sometimes look like they get in each other's way, and the areas they take up are either crowded, or teams sit off them knowing that the four players in front of them don't want the ball into feet in tight spaces. He gets stick for always going square, but in fairness to him, there just isn't anything on. It's narrow and teams just kill the space on the inside. Until we get more in front of the two holders we aren't going to do shit

    DOCHERTY: 4 - I don't get him.
He runs around a fair amount but doesn't make many tackles. He's OK in possession but not decisive. He doesn't really look like scoring. He doesn't play the killer ball. He's like a rhythmic passer who keeps things ticking over but we have two better options at the double 6. Campbell is better at the harem scarem running around. Dock is just kind of thete, except he drifts out of games badly.

A.CAMPBELL: 5 - I mean he runs around a lot and wins the ball back but he's shit with the ball at his feet. Guess we should give credit to Millwall fans who all seemed to think he was terrible. He's our only loan signing ffs. And he's 28 and a grafter. No wonder we're mid table.

LEABURN: 6.5 - I think did about the best he could with what he was given, which can generously be described as scraps. Because of our lack of width and creativity he has to drop off or pull out wide to look to provide that, which means he isn't in the box if crosses do miraculously come in.

GODDEN: 4.5 - He's really a poacher with a team that doesn't create much. Missed one where he should have at least hit the target. But it wasn't as easy as some said in the match report. No quick enough to press effectively. Undoubtedly handsome.

I wasn't as down on selling May as some were, I get getting a huge profit on a player the wrong side of 30, but May's pace and creativity would be a real help this season.

This is a team playing with two #10s that starts zero number 10s. There's no width, and Berry is the only midfield player who looks even slightly comfortable turning in tight spaces. Campbell ain't it.

It is absolutely no coincidence that this team looks better with Karoy in it. He presses well and plays on the turn looking to drive the ball forward. He's not perfect but he's our only Midfielder with a balance of ability on the ball and energy in the press.

So we did all that business early in the summer. Sold last year's best player. And ended up relying on a talented but still raw 20 year old from the academy to be the heart of our midfield.

I'm not Jones out at this stage, but I am Jones doesn't get to do transfers anymore. There's a reason why everyone worth a damn uses the DoF to do their transfers, it provides balance and oversight. Instead we got Jones' mates, and we have a desperately one dimensional team.

I really hate long ball football, but I'm basically at a point of "go back to 3-5-2 and lump it to Miles and Gas." I mean that's what this team is built for. It just wasn't built well enough for that, but it's definitely not built well enough to play football through the lines.

Not sure even I, with a couple of seasons as manager of The Who’d’a Thought It FC, could turn this lot into winners!!!  🤷🏻‍♂️😏

Sacking a manager every season will not bring success.
Sooner or later you have to stick with a manager and back him.
But I honestly don't think we will improve this season even when we get a few players back.
Weather Jones can turn it around given timi have no idea but this season is over despite what some on here might say.
    Depressing.

This is the worse group of players we have ever had, the likes of Gillesphy, REG, Anderson, Campbell, Hylton are standard non-league players, the rest bar leaburn, Jones, Ramsey are not far better. I despise Jones tactics, but change of managers wont see this group progress much further, its a horribly shaped squad with no creativity and Jones has to take the blame for that. I Genuinely wouldn't care if they all were sold tbh; the few likable fans favorites we had last year in May and Dobson were sold, its truly a rotten group of poor players

You can't keep sacking managers, apparently. I actually thought Jones was a great appointment & was pleased when he was announced as The Manager rather than Head Coach with control over signings rather than dick head scott being in control. However Jones has managed to turn a dreadful team who finished in our worst position for 90+ years into an equally dreadful team with absolutely no creativity from midfield (or anywhere else), strikers who won't score as many goals between them that Alfie scored last season, tactics ? err boot it long & hope for the best. Talk of the owners seriously funding a squad for promotion, well that's turned out well. No doubt the rose tinted glasses brigade will be out in force, "just wait until we click", "it'll take 3/4/5/6 transfer windows before we have the squad that jones wants" but it's yet another wasted season & any decent players that we have will be long gone & so we start again. It's just a fucking shambles that some of us saw at the start of the season but were slated as bed wetters, negative etc. This is Charlton Athletic, this is now our level, 59 years supporting this club & I've never felt so low.

15 goals in 14 games is just woeful. Most of those goals also seem to come from when we are 1-0 down and going all out. Think we can count the number of first half goals on one hand still. To stand any chance of stopping this rut, we need to find a way to be better in attack.
