Alfie May- Progress at Birmingham

I'm not sure on that one Manic, I'm pretty certain on where the squad is now though and as much as CBT could be erratic and didn't have a clue how to cover his full back, he's not been replaced and with Small not signing an extension, Jones has a midfield that, apart from Coventry, is full of work horses with little flair. If Alfie May's fee was to be used to bolster the squad, a little more thought should have been given to who would create the chances.Manic_mania said:
I'm pretty sure there was a plus one year option we could have triggered so there was absolutely no rush to cash in (if that's what you want to call what we got for him cashing in)Bailey said:We probably cannot know what Alfie May would or wouldn't have done as his contract run down but I am pretty certain that Charlton would have tried to get a fee for him before that contract run out, so for me the club and Jones took a look at where the situation would leave us in the January window probably decided that with a year left on his contract £750000 was never going to be beaten. That being said, you have to look at what the team looks like without Alfie May, in my opinion, I still think he would struggle to score in a team that is not creating chances, this happened when CBT left and when Jones took over Alfie's scoring rate resumed, we had brought in a number of players in the January window but I'm convinced that Alfie May's prolific scoring rate resumed because we actually found a replacement for CBT, almost by accident, we signed Thierry Small on a short term deal. One of the reasons we have not created the chances we managed to create towards the end of last season is Thierry Small's lack of form, lack of game time or whatever is causing him not to be the player we signed last year. Check the goals for column and the stats of chances created this season, both have fallen off the scale, I'm convinced that this has played a part in Jones's team tinkering, he knows, as others on here have stated, that we have a lack of creativity in the squad and he's trying to overcome it with so far disastrous results. As for Alfie May, he's gone, rightly or wrongly we have to get on with it.0 -

I bet it will be as damaging as the true story behind Diego Poyets exit, boy I can’t wait for that one…TellyTubby said:Alfie May has promised the true story surrounding his Charlton Athletic exit will eventually come out after being subjected to abuse since swapping The Valley for St Andrew’s.

May 106 minutes per goal.
Godden 105 minutes per goal.

Selling Alfie for nearly a million at his age was never bad business for us, the questionable business is spending that money on Ahadme which is still a big question mark.6

Praps he comes good in the new formation?Covered_End_Lad said:Selling Alfie for nearly a million at his age was never bad business for us, the questionable business is spending that money on Ahadme which is still a big question mark.
Doubt it though...0 -
Was Alfie injured when he came off yesterday?0

Didn’t appear to be. Only thing injured was his ego.Mendonca In Asdas said:Was Alfie injured when he came off yesterday?10 -

Strikers getting subbed at half time not injured is not a good look, Alfie didn’t like it when he used to get subbed for us at about 65 minutes,
but then you can’t have players picking the team I guess.2 -
I'll be interested to see how this works out for him , it's clear Stansfield is the main #9 for them and Willumson they spent big money on to be a No10 , they've also got the likes of Marc Leonard , Emil Hansson and Scott Wright who could operate off of Stansfield too.
His bank account might be the only winner here if he's getting hooked at HT.0 -
He didn't get going for them today, but don't think he should be written off this season for them. Give him the chances he will score and he still scored a few already.6

Didn’t seem interested once Ramsay cut him in half7

May wasn't getting any joy yesterday but I thought it was an error bringing him off. Yes, he wasn't in the game but nor were any of their forwards. We know May can be dangerous at any time and it gave us a psychological lift when he was subbed. Like we had won a small victory.15

It doesn’t look so bad when it probably paid for Godden and Dixon too.Covered_End_Lad said:Selling Alfie for nearly a million at his age was never bad business for us, the questionable business is spending that money on Ahadme which is still a big question mark.
In Godden we’ve got a similar type of player but one who Jones gets on with, and in Dixon a good prospect.
If we play better football like we did yesterday we may also get more out of Ahadme.4 -
Who was he using his Mrs and kids as an excuse to protect then? Jones? Or his own desire to earn more dough?Croydon said:Never bought the family story and I'm amazed anybody on here did tbh.
Struggle with the idea that someone would bring their family into something so public, if it weren't genuinely the case at all. In fact, I'd expect it to be the polar opposite and make other excuses to protect your family, if they were the reason4 -

The random digging out of May after we played well is very strange. Especially after we've had to sit through Kanu missing an open goal and the rest of the 'performances' this season up front from our striking collective.12 -

But I still think if Jones was given the option of spending @£750K and keeping May as well, he would have done so.RodneyCharltonTrotta said:
He surely sold May because otherwise he would have an @zero transfer fund.
Would be good to know that but I expect we'll not find out for years if ever.

Thanks for reminding us that May’s played more minutes than Godden has.SELR_addicks said:

Both very good forwards at League One level. One has proved he can score at the level above as well…1 -
Pretty damning that Godden has been sitting behind Ahadme and a winger in our pecking order.Callumcafc said:

Started the season with a head injury otherwise probably would’ve been starting at Wigan.SELR_addicks said:

May is battling with a £15m striker on the other hand. It’s been one of my biggest issues with Jones so far this season that he didn’t turn to our most clinical striker sooner but now that Matty’s got 2 in 2, I can’t see him being dropped for a while.9 -

Read back over the last week, and pre game, I mentioned about Godden record being as good as May’s this time last year.. and number of fans mention we haven’t signed anyone that has replaced May’s goals.. as it stands, with Godden record, I believe we have, if we have created enough chances for him. May would have struggled for goals in this style of football.SELR_addicks said:
