Probably the right thing. It did feel during the Euros that we'd become a bit stale and some freshness wouldn't hurt. It's a real shame that he didn't win a trophy as he deserved to but in the end it was close but not enough. I think he probably wants to go now to avoid bedding in a mentality of nearly men in the players. I'm also glad he's gone before it becomes toxic. I've already started to feel like following England is getting a bit annoying because everything becomes endless comments about how Southgate is holding the team back, it's taken over the narrative completely. Him going now means we get a reset where hopefully for a while there won't be one specific thing to complain about that emerges and we can get a bit more interesting discussion about the team.
Southgate will go with an incredible legacy though. For pretty much my entire football supporting life we have been a mess. World Cup 98 felt like there was a bit of hope, possibly because I was 7 and didn't know about apathy yet, but from there it's been horrendous. Group exits, non-qualification, embarrassing knockout losses, penalty horror shows and qualification games that brought genuine misery into everyone's lives. I hated most of the players who played for England and I'd generally rather watch anything else rather than England draw a qualifier against Macedonia. We've become very used to Southgate but he brought easy, completely painless qualification periods, simple group progression where we would pretty much always win our group and then actual knockout wins. People go on about his easy draws but we earned those by winning where we needed to, and we even sort of didn't bother winning the group in 2018, completely changing our line-up, because we knew it would give us a better route. We've got to enjoy penalty shootout wins, semi-final victories, everything except the big moment at the end and that was honestly unthinkable just 6 years ago. He's made the players enjoy playing for England, stop visibly hating showing up and each other and built a relationship where the fans actually enjoy themselves. Hopefully we'll replace him with someone who can go one further and win us a trophy, but if they do it will absolutely be built on a bedrock of what Southgate created. I hope it's Carsley, I'm worried that someone like Potter or Howe will come in and completely change how we do things and we'll lose our gains from the past few years. The main thing I'll take is that my first football memory is the shootout in 96. It was horrible and heartbreaking and it's forever pinned to international football in my mind. Southgate gave me first an England penalty shootout win and then a win over Germany at the Euros, which felt like an incredibly cathartic moment for me during what was a difficult period for everyone. I'm sad for him that he hasn't got a trophy to go with his achievements in growing the team and everyone's relationship with England football, but he's left an incredibly strong platform for the next person to build on, I hope we make the most of it.
Thanks Gareth Southgate for making a quick decision and we thank you for your work in creating an environment that players wanted to be part of other than Ben White who prefers the beaches to putting the cones out and watching.
Just a shame that you couldn't make quick decisions in vital matches when we were struggling and thank your lucky stars that the Slovakian defenders switch off the once in the last seconds and didn't man mark Jude in the last 16 match as you would now be exiled to Siberia; still better than Croydon !

Correct decision. I think Southgate took us as far as he could and now time for some fresh ideas to try and get the best from the attacking players we have. England for a while have been poor to watch this year especially.

Do think he was pretty limited tactically, too defensive, and has also got to the point any long serving manager can of favouring players/not wanting to drop them (a half fit Kane, for example).

GS did a sterling job and got back pride of the Nation. He's made his decision and quickly. Neither Potter or Howe inspire me, nor Carsley come to that. I've said it before and will say it again, the FA need to break the bank and go for Klopp or Pep. I'm not stuck up on 'he must be British" Why? No British manager has been successful in the PL for years. However I fear it'll be one of Potter or Howe.
Potter and Howe are good managers, much more tactically adept than Southgate. What's to fear?
Potter did well at Brighton but not at Chelsea. Too many big names at Stamford Bridge may be? Howe is a safe pair of hands, but doesn't set the game on fire in my opinion. We have a great squad of talented players, we need a manager who can get the best out of them playing attacking football. Neither of the above are, for me, that person.

Winning the world cup would be the only way he could satisfy a big chunk of the support base and press. Why should he waste another two years and put his family through turmoil for something that is highly unlikely to happen. He doesn't deserve that. His service for his country has been commendable. Think this is spot on. He got the whole country energised about the national side again and cannot argue with his results. With a better tactician could we be sitting here with a trophy from the last few years, possibly but not definite.

£5 million is nothing to what the FA have in their back pockets. I would be straight on the phone to him (Howe) if it was my call.
I would really like Howe but I wonder if he feels like he still needs to win something major at club level before going to international management. I think he'll manage England one day for sure though, just maybe not this time around.

I don't believe Gareth Southgate has any ambition to go into club management after the Middlesbrough experience. Andy Woodman told me back when he was Charlton's keeper coach around 2009 that Gareth had no ambition to be a club manager again ! A decent source I'm sure you'll agree. He took the FA route and doors opened for him to progress.
Gareth Southgate is a wealthy man and doesn't need or crave the daily grind of club management.

Now we’ve had an English manager for a while who didn’t win anything (although he’s still massively in credit to me) people are calling for another foreign manager.

I hope the FA stipulate that whoever comes in must continue with the organisational/psychological/team-building aspect that Southgate has built there. That seems to be core to any semi-success we've had recently.
Unless they offer Howe an insane amount of money he's not interested in the England job yet.
