Alex Mitchell - gone on a season long loan to Plymouth Argyle (p11)

  • Good solid L1 CB, he might have progressed further but he needs the game time to do it.

One of those signings I thought would work out, but Jones has improved so much and is the better player, and Ramsay’s move to RCB means there’s no room for Alex beyond being back up.

I expect this means Zach has moved ahead of him. He signed a new deal last season and did well in the SPL. We also have Laqeretabua not far behind, another rated by the club as shown by also getting a new contract.

Likely to be on a bigger wage than those two, and I feel they have more potential, so that’s another side to this.
  • This Mitchell has more of the dark arts about him and I probably would have kept him and told him to fight for a place. He might not necessarily be first in line atm but it’s a long, tough season ahead and opportunities always come around.
  • Always gave his best and seemed to be a player that others respected and looked up to which given his age says a lot.

In the right defence he s a great acquisition … needs some rapid wing backs to cover him .

Good luck to him for the season

Thought he looked good & did alright at the start of last season. Seems like he was one of the scapegoats when we went on that awful run before xmas.

Hope to see him back here playing for us sometime in the future.
  • How long left on his contract?
  • Good bloke and competitor, but a bit immobile and sadly not good enough for the Championship, as Millwall probably knew. But an excellent signing for an L1 team looking for a strong, physical defender.

It does leave us slightly short at the back though unless Burke can stay fit this season.
NJ has mentioned one more perm signing. I reckon this frees up the space for that player to be a centre half, Duffy or A.N.Other.

Depending on this anticipated arrival could be the end for Alex, we'll see.

  • Argyle supporters saying it'll be good to have a solid defender with no mistakes in them…
  • Little surprised must mean Burke if fit … cause it does leave us a little short
  • I like Alex Mitchell and he seems a really good guy, but he’s not going to get much game time, especially if Reece Burke can get himself fit to cover Jones and Ramsay. I hope I’m proved wrong but I don’t think that Alex is likely to cut it at Championship level.

The trimming of the squad continues apace. I assume that Zach Mitchell will now stick around, although we know that Jacko wants Kanu and Enslin looks like another who may well go out.
  • Says to me Burke is maybe not as far away as we thought.
Or Duffy is close to signing.
  • Loan rather than a sale, I imagine, means we do still see him in our plans long-term.
He has a year left on his deal in June 26, I think it's a deal that suits the player and the club, if we decide he is surplus to requirements in June 26 then we will likely get a fee. For the player, he can find some form by playing regularly and potentially place himself in a good position should he wish to move on.

More likely is that it moves Zach onto the bench.

I really hope this isn't the last we see of Mitch in red. Still only 23, and look how long it has taken someone as good as Lloyd Jones to come into his own. He has the attributes to be a very good championship defender.

As for all the comments about pace, and comfort on the ball etc, I don't believe we saw enough of him to make that assessment. He was always in unsettled sides and we were very bad/going throuch teething issues when he was playing mostly. Unfortunately for Mitch, Lloyd Jones & Kayne Ramsay are just top players and it was always going to be a hard task to dislodge one of those two.

Reckon like Terry Taylor he will do very well on loan, and be a standout player. Best of luck to him, top bloke and his family are lovely as well, the exact type of character I like to see at Charlton. 👍🏻
I think 30 competitive starts is enough to know they are weaker areas of his game. I don't think it means he can't play Championship football one day, that potential is still there, but he's never going to be known for spraying impressive passes out from the back, carrying the ball into midfield, or comfortably outpacing quick strikers.
I'm not sure the Championship potential is there to be honest. He reminds of Matt Taylor in 11/12, a good honest defender in L1, but lacking the athleticism needed in the Championship.

It's nice that he scored on his final league game for us though.
  • Mitchell is in the mould of the traditional centre half, big and strong in the air - but in today's Championship, mobility, quick feet,  good 1st touch and ability to pick a pass are also demanded.

But he'll do a solid job for Argyle.
  • League game. He played against Stevenage, but didn't score.

  • Good move for him and makes sense - left a Championship club to come to us for first team football, now doing the same again.

    Decent L1 defender.

    Good luck Alex.
  • I really like him, decent player and a proper competitor.  League One is his level for now but hopefully he keeps improving and can rejoin us.
Definitely leaves us short. Our team is built on clean sheets but an injury to Jones or Ramsey and where is the cover (Burke for 1 in 3 games if lucky).
  • Good luck Alex, Good player, hope he does well and comes back stronger. Hope this means Burke is back to fitness now.

Just think it is massively exaggerated how limited his passing was and play on the ball.

If we ever saw him when we were a settled side and he was shanking the ball etc then fair enough, he just didn't get a run and that's not because of his level, that's cause of how good his competition is/was.

He will split opinions, but I think he will have a very decent career, whether that's with us or someone else.
  • Oh dear. Where is the cover now ? Maybe Burke is nearly ready, I hope so, otherwise we are short if we get an injury.
  • Good luck to Alex, but i think the Championship is a league too far for him.

We will need another signing though for cover, as Burke looks unreliable, fitness wise.
  • I like him, proper battler who gives everything. In the mould of Jason Pearce, old school CB good in the air, fights hard, loves a tackle and has the shit-housery to go with it. Unfortunately the Championship has moved on to a place where there is little space for that type of player. its a much quicker league now and pace is everything, you also have to be much better on the ball. Whilst I would be happy with him as cover in a injury crisis if he wants game time at this point in his career its right to let him go on loan.

Wish him all the best. I think he will thrive there. Expect him to get promoted from league 1 a number of times in his career but would be surprised if he steps up to the championship.

Suspect Burke is nearly back as he was always going to be the first choice cover for both Jones and Ramsay.

Will never forget him giving it to the Wrexham fans in the away end at the Valley at the end of the match!
  • Surprised it has happened now after a decent showing against Stevenage last week in the cup, I thought he deserved at least the Cambridge game next week, maybe Burke isn't far away or another CB is joining?

? What do you mean stay ?  :#
  • Best of luck Alex, look forward to seeing you back.
