I've heard the name of a player we are meant to be interested in and, whilst I don't personally know much about him, he definitely has the makings of a step up in quality

Not having a go Swisdom but this is a truly beautiful piece of rumour-mongery. Got just enough to be intriguing and invites a bit of speculation, but still very vague on details like age and position etc so people can go wild with some ideas for who it is.Swisdom said:I've heard the name of a player we are meant to be interested in and, whilst I don't personally know much about him, he definitely has the makings of a step up in quality
I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I actually think it's great.
Of course the fact that pretty much every single position needs serious upgrading makes it even better as it gives us even more room to wonder.2 -

I’d love to see Bauer back.
sounds like he’s gone from Preston.0 -

Way too injury prone and past it now. That would be purely an emotional signing, not a decent one. He has barely played for 2 years19 -
He's been fit but not considered good enough, reading the PNE comments:Athletico Charlton said:CafcSCP said:I’d love to see Bauer back.

And I guess you could argue that not good enough for the Championship isn't necessarily not good enough for League 1.
But I'd rather we look for someone different and younger.9 -
We have fond memories of Bauer's last action in a Charlton shirt let's not spoil it by bringing him back.20
-
No previous players please. Even the ones like Bauer who left in credit.
Time to draw a line and get the Jones era started with players on the up with something to prove not going for the nostalgic, greatest hits vibe.
When you look at Powell's rebuild (the most successful of semi recent times) he didn't go for names from the club's past but players who wanted to take a step up, or prove themselves. And that's what we need more of now.10 -

Sean Raggett anyone? local Kent boy, out of contract at Pompey, plays regularly and possible captain material, won't stay if he isn't guaranteed to play6

Fair comment but I don’t want to betray the person I was speaking to.thenewbie said:

Liam Bennett? Really impressed me against us both games for Cambridge and won their POTY. If not he's definitely one I'd want us to try for as he's out of contract.Swisdom said:

He’s a right back. I’ve also been impressed by him, only concern would be he is quite small and Jones definitely seems to value physicalityButtleJR said:

I’ve also heard the name of a LWB, could be bollocks but it’s a player involved in play-offs so would fit what you are saying in not happening for a few weeks.Swisdom said:

i think it will be a busy summerBut i’m not sure I’d describe signing him as a ‘step up’ so I think we’ve maybe got different names. I don’t know much about the player but do think he looks like he’d be a good signing, especially as we already have Small who I am happy with in that position0 -
LB/LWB coming in probably means Edun on his way? I know he can play CM too but he's not really impressed.3

I don't care who they are but they need to be ready for a promotion fight and preferably able to step up to the Championship should we go up.
We can't trust any of the injured lot to be available next season or be as good as they were. Too many fragile players.1 -
I do think the dynamic will be different next season. I think we'll be a much more physical and robust side. Rather direct. With that in mind I am not sure we'll be recruiting any tip-tap-Charlie type players, more like a few battering rams
I'm not so sure it will win awards for being pretty but all I really want is the award that says we get promoted at the end of it all. Being effective is the priority.

Karlan Grant on loan?
Wages would be astronomical because I think he signed some thing like a 6 year deal at West Brom but he's been out on loan to Cardiff this season and many think he will be shipped out again In the summer.
He did well at Cardiff by all accounts but the goals dried up a fair bit. What better way to get him back to goal scoring ways than a jaunt in league one?
Maybe we could renegotiate our sell on clause to get him for a season?5 -
Think Edun and May are seen as too small for Jones, nobody can deny May's work rate has definitely dropped off of late, somewhat understandable from the moment we were safe, but for the Golden boot I would have expected a striker to keep going.MarcusH26 said:LB/LWB coming in probably means Edun on his way? Out of interest because I don't remember anything of our games against them, we're Luton a direct side under Jones when we played them?

They had James Justin and Jack Stacey as wing backs who I think were quite direct.LTKapal said:Out of interest because I don't remember anything of our games against them, we're Luton a direct side under Jones when we played them? His side in the Championship had both Adebayo and Carlton Morris up front. Both big physical guys. Plus Cauley Woodrow off the bench1 -
I read that as he's not a Left Back but his initials are LB. Either way I hope we try for him.NabySarr said:

Is his Dad’s name Steve @Swisdom? Would fit the bill, is out of contract and has spent 4/5 of the last seasons at Championship level. Would say he is a versatile defender… An experienced wiser head step up and if my hunch is right and this is the calibre we are pursuing 👍Swisdom said:

He looks a great prospect to me and would love us to sign him but a) he's a right back, b) he is short which doesn't seem to fit and c) Cambridge have an option so he wouldn't be free.
He looks a spit of Solly but with more attacking intent to me.0 -

Yeah Jones has always had big physical strikers but I just hope Alfie isn't sold because he doesn't quite fit this. I'd like to see him paired with Miles because I think that would cause real problems for most defenses at this level.
Edun just hasn't worked out , looked like someone playing out of position most of the time and don't think he's a Jones type.2 -
The Luton we played in league 1 were less direct, played brilliant attacking football with a diamond midfield and 2 very good full backs.LTKapal said:Out of interest because I don't remember anything of our games against them, we're Luton a direct side under Jones when we played them?
The Luton team Jones then had in the championship were very direct 3-5-2 with 2 big men up top and a nightmare to play against.I think from what we’ve seen so far it’s more likely to be the second that we see. But hopefully a little bit more on the ball quality than we’ve seen this season with a couple of new midfielders hopefully going into the eleven.Do think May can easily fit that, direct can mean playing into the channels which we’ve seen a lot with Kanu and May up front. Where we’ve struggled is in games where that hasn’t been effective like Saturday, and we don’t have another way of getting up the pitch until Aneke comes on. A new big hold up striker will be key, as will Leaburn’s return and hopefully him having more luck with injuries2
