  • In terms of of a versatile LWB I reckon Brendan Wiredu would be a good shout, Fleetwoods captain and best player this season, would have a point to prove coming back to us :)

Out of interest because I don't remember anything  of our games against them, we're Luton a direct side under Jones when we played them?
The Luton we played in league 1 were less direct, played brilliant attacking football with a diamond midfield and 2 very good full backs.

The Luton team Jones then had in the championship were very direct 3-5-2 with 2 big men up top and a nightmare to play against.

I think from what we’ve seen so far it’s more likely to be the second that we see. But hopefully a little bit more on the ball quality than we’ve seen this season with a couple of new midfielders hopefully going into the eleven.

Do think May can easily fit that, direct can mean playing into the channels which we’ve seen a lot with Kanu and May up front. Where we’ve struggled is in games where that hasn’t been effective like Saturday, and we don’t have another way of getting up the pitch until Aneke comes on. A new big hold up striker will be key, as will Leaburn’s return and hopefully him having more luck with injuries
With the right squad we can be either of those sides. Both will need a lot of investment.

LB/LWB coming in probably means Edun on his way? I know he can play CM too but he's not really impressed.
Think Edun and May are seen as too small for Jones, nobody can deny May's work rate has definitely dropped off of late, somewhat understandable from the moment we were safe, but for the Golden boot I would have expected a striker to keep going.

Yeah Jones has always had big physical strikers but I just hope Alfie isn't sold because he doesn't quite fit this. I'd like to see him paired with Miles because I think that would cause real problems for most defenses at this level.

Edun just hasn't worked out , looked like someone playing out of position most of the time and don't think he's a Jones type.
How many goals have our big strikers scored in comparison to Little Alfie May's total?

    Purely on GP90 (All Comps)
    May 0.61
    Leaburn 0.44
    Wickham 0.64
    Aneke 0.35
    Kanu 0.32

Our biggest mistake last season remains selling wantaway attacker CBT.
  • OK, so season's over and the transfer speculation starts. So far we've had Phillips, Bauer, Wiredu and Karlan Grant suggested as players we could sign. No mention of Fosu yet but I'm sure his time will come. Any other bets on former players who will be mentioned as good signings this window?

No it was not .. he was very overrated as Derby have found out … that’s why there fans don’t want them to buy him …

First time I think I've ever agreed with Ronnie. For all his benefits, decision making of a non league player and defensively lazy which invites pressure down that side.

The stopped clock act. Crumbs of insight. Keeping you hooked. Try to resist
  • Not sure I want us signing players from relegated teams into League 2 if we can help it. Fully appreciate that there are good players to be had but we can aim a little higher surely?

If we want to take a punt on a "smaller Team" player whose teams stay up or struggled but still do well..Daniel Udoh for example. Good player and done well at Shrews so might want to test himself at a higher level.

Buy/sign the players who are a hungry to push, not the ones looking to escape a sinking ship.

Myles Weston lookd ok yesterday.
  • There's a reason why I said invites pressure and not blaming him as clearly there are larger defensive issues. ( I'm not going to go deeper tactically ) Regardless re your other point we would have been clear of the relegation picture regardless if he picked the right option more often than not.
Several games we lost 2-1 where we had a ear goalscoring opp and he didn't square it and blasted it over or wide.
Fine margins which can turn loses to draws, draws to wins even in that awful Appleton era.

If it means anything I took 3 villa fans i work with to several games this year. Their nickname for him?
    Corey No End Product.

People used to moan that CBT didn't help his fullback and that's why we conceded goals. I think the fact that once he left we still conceded goals near enough every game prove that actually, the defence was just shit regardless.

He was the spark in the team that created things out of nothing, without him in the side alongside May we would have been relegated.

He didn't play for us for almost half the season and finished as our second highest scorer and our highest assist maker. I wonder what his output would have been in half a season if he didn't have "the decision making of a non-league player".

That comment is up there with the "he only has 2 moves" comment, when the moves he had were essentially cut inside and try to score or stay outside and try to assist
The main problem with CBT is inconsistency magnified by his lack of all round game. When he's in form he's unplayable and he's a huge difference maker in games, but when he's having a poor run he does absolutely nothing else. Comparing him to someone like Conor Washington, also weirdly at Derby, Washington would have games where he looked like he'd never score again but he'd work hard enough with and without the ball that his overall contribution was greater.

We managed to get one incredible run of form out of CBT where he was involved in 15 goals in 25 games and was involved in the odd goal in 9 of them. There's no doubt he was a huge part of us staying up. He got 1 assist in 12 appearances for Derby though so it looks like the run is over and we definitely got rid of him at the right time. Jones would have hated him and I don't think he'll offer much in the Championship where sheer physical talent isn't enough against better players. Good business in the end but it doesn't change that we should be very grateful to him for helping us get the points we needed under some pretty rancid managers.

Not exactly been ignored either, simply seen as a good supporting act from the bench for the majority.

    Corey No End Product.
Which was a joke I made on here when the opposite was true - he was regularly scoring and assisting but continued to be criticised. Despite his weaknesses he was one of our most important players this season.

Even during his good run it still wasn’t enough for some, but had he scored and assisted as many as some thought he should he’d have had 50+ goals and assists over a full season. No player in this league is that productive and consistent.
  • Half a season, 8 goals, 8 Assists.

    Corey No End Product indeed.

I've heard the name of a player we are meant to be interested in and, whilst I don't personally know much about him, he definitely has the makings of a step up in quality
Not having a go Swisdom but this is a truly beautiful piece of rumour-mongery. Got just enough to be intriguing and invites a bit of speculation, but still very vague on details like age and position etc so people can go wild with some ideas for who it is.

     I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I actually think it's great.

Of course the fact that pretty much every single position needs serious upgrading makes it even better as it gives us even more room to wonder.
Fair comment but I don’t want to betray the person I was speaking to.

He’s an LB but not a LB

Unlikely anything will happen for at least 2 or 3 weeks

i think it will be a busy summer
Liam Bennett? Really impressed me against us both games for Cambridge and won their POTY. If not he's definitely one I'd want us to try for as he's out of contract.
Both Cambridge full backs looked good at their place.

Bennett had Tyreece in his pocket when we played them. Didn’t offer lots going forward though….so may not suit a wing back role.

EDIT - it was James Gibbons that marked Campbell out the game. Bennett is their RB as someone else has mentioned.
  • Offer contracts to Hector and Thomas - Know the club and proper mustard with a top midfield in front of them
Pay Supa Dobbo 600k to break his contract and stay with us, propa Charlton
Pat Bauer on a free - knows the club and how to get promoted
Josh Magennis on a free - Knows the club and can do the big man stuff, good squad player
Jordan Cousins on a free - Knows the club, versatile, good squad player
Tariqe Fosu on a free - knows the club, played at a higher level, like a League One Arjen Robben

If after ex players we should be targeting Gomez, Pope, Lookman, Konsa, Aribo, Beilik and Sarmiento too surely, or have the board no ambition?
