brook looking in great touch, great morning of cricket - very balanced and both sides will come out happy, cummins must've been thinking he'd made a terrible decision bowling first with england's start.

I think Australia slightly shade that session, just because one of the three wickets they took was that of Root.

But after a streaky start, Brook looks like he wants a big score..

Brook is such a talent and looks one of, if not the most complete batsman we've ever produced. He needs to match that talent with a career that has the longevity and success of Joe Root.

Cummins bowling some very nice stuff this morning
This is why England need to bat long in this innings. Make sure he bowls three or four spells and he'll be knackered for the second innings. Starc is off the field and that leaves Cummins, Hazelwood and Marsh plus a bit of Todd Murphy.

Where did that come from? A step to leg and hoicks it over mid-wicket.

The groin is clearly giving him grief

In normal years, this would be sensible advice, and should be followed, to the letter.  And, in doing so, would likely reap rewards.

However, we all know now that if the opponents' openers have to bowl four or more spells, we'll have scored millions and be lining up an innings win.

He's been playing very solidly before the injury, now he's switched tempo to boundaries so he doesn't have to run!

100 partnership between Brook and Moeen.

Can’t see Moeen lasting long with this injury bothering him to this extent. He’s getting worse not better.

moeen using his bat as a walking stick running between the wickets. He's looked great though and approaching 30... we allowed to say moving him to 3 was an inspired decision?

Here we go, this spell from Murphy will be very important in determining this game

Moeen should go off injured, at the moment's he's a walking wicket. He's done the job he was sent in to do - get that injury seen to and he can bat again later.

100% its worked brilliantly. Even at Headingley, he didn't get any runs but allowed Brook to bat 5.

Well that was fun at least, but a worry whether he'll be able to bowl.

Wickets are just about keeping the Aussies in it. One very good partnership and we're well in front

Judge Ali not on the runs he scores but how many more Brook scores at 5 than 3.

I am more concerned that he won't be able to bowl...

185-4 is a decent score when you consider the conditions. It's been a very dull overcast day.

So it's Murphy, then Root and Moeen a long, long way behind the pair of them

A sample size of 2, 4 or even 6 isn't really conclusive is it?  I am not really sure what point your trying to make?

Would you rather Ali can't bowl?
