    That selection puts a lot of pressure on Anderson to deliver - and also does nothing to dispel the suspicion that the team isn’t picked 100% on merit but certain players get preferential treatment

    stokes has already said he picks players on what they can do on their best days, which you can understand the selection of anderson, ditto bairstow and crawley.

    thing is, would this have been the case had we won the last game ? ..  many pundits are saying things like 'Jimmy has done enough for England to choose when he goes' .. all the time he's pulling in the BIG bucks, he might decide to carry on for twenty more years .. all respect to a great cricketer, BUT his time to go has surely come

    f w i w .. England's friend Ricky Ponting is suggesting that Stokes is a rotten captain and that under a 'proper skipper' England would have won this series already

    When all Test matches started  on a Thursday there used to be a rest day on a Sunday & finish on the Tuesday. I believe some may have played on the Sunday to "make up" time if there had been a washout the day before.

    Don't think they played on a Sunday, in fact it wasn't unheard of for players to turn out for their counties or play in benefits on the rest day. Going back a few years, I think there was a provisional sixth day at the last test if it was a series decider, may still exist of course.

    There were plenty of timeless tests in the past, apparently all tests in Australia pre WW2 followed this format. There's a good Wikipedia article about it.
    I think timeless Tests came to an end when one Test had to be cut short due to the boat leaving for the UK. In the days of having flights multiple times a day there is no reason why Timeless Tests cant make a comeback :0

    Not before time. Given that he played just two IPL games and bowled one over, he could have missed the two NZ Tests and had the six months off between December and June to do that. The talk about "we've found a way of managing it" was complete and utter tosh.

     I get the sentiment for picking Anderson for Old Trafford, but it was a big mistake.
     I've written him off many times before but I seriously think he's done now.
    Vaughn called it the other day. He didn't take one critical wicket in the 3 tests he played. They dropped him from Headingley and we won.

    Love the bloke to bits. But for the good of Bazball, please say enough is enough

    I think that is a good message for the england team to fire them up but I really don't think the Aussies will care about what happened on days 4 and 5 in Manchester. For them it's job done and they won't see past that.

    he's hobbled around in the field and at the crease, was clear there was something really wrong with his knee.

    "Would have, could have, should have". The Aussies would argue that had Lyon been fit they would have won every Test or if they'd won the toss each and every time as we have. Had that ball not hit Stokes' bat and gone to the boundary we wouldn't have won the 2019 World Cup would we? But it doesn't say that on the trophy does it? At the end of the day, it's what's in the book that counts. Always has been and always should be.
