Japan and South Korea weren't footballing countries and had a great tournament. South Korea can probably be considered a footballing country these days. If the world cup was only to be played at footballing countries it will only be played in Europe and South America. It was great to have it in South Africa.

Any intimacy in public between men and women (including between teenagers) can lead to arrest. Living together whilst unmarried is prohibited in Qatar, and sex outside of marriage, regardless of whether this is same sex couples or opposite sex couples, is illegal.

I don’t think any visitor is in particular danger at all. I just think it’s a shit regime that persecutes certain groups because of medieval beliefs and allowed 7000 foreign workers to boil to death in order to build their stadia. That not bollocks at all.
Having the World Cup in Qatar won’t make any difference to their laws once the final whistle is over. Just look at Russia for a good example. What has changed there? The WC is just a money making machine.

Well actually, (and I'm grateful to whoever on here recco'ed this) he was already given plenty of chance to do this in The Men who sold the World Cup. Basically he argues that FIFA is such a big organisation that he could not possibly control what the naughty national reps were up to. Utterly laughable. And this Netflix doc will have to go some to beat this one..

I agree. That's why I've never been to any of the ME countries. But the problem is they've parked a World Cup there when on footballing criteria there is zero reason to do so. Fucking zero. I never fancied South Africa but it has a football heritage (and don't we know it at Charlton). I don't think Russia should have been awarded it under Putin, but at least there were football arguments for it. If only it had gone in a different direction as a country, it could have been a great one on and off the pitch.
