Want same team as vs czech republic but change phillips for hendo (at least for a half) and we will tick.

Phillips to me always looks 2 yards too short at this level and the german central midfield could exploit that.

Saka was backed in to score on betfair so expect him to start

  • So, if social media is to be believed (and I haven't been through all of this thread to check), Southgate's gone:

    Pickford
    Trippier Walker Maguire Stones Shaw
    Rice Phillips
    Sterling Kane Foden
Go for 5 at the back if he must, but drop one of the two DMs rather than have essentially a back 7.

    Saka gets the nod.
  • Rice and Phillips !!!!
  • Definitely 3 at the back then.
  • will take that - decent options on the bench which need to be used early if things aren't going well - not waiting until 10 mins to go
  • No DCL on the bench

Cant see Kane being subbed in case it goes to penalties

Would Calvert-Lewin replace anyone else in that team, if we stuck with one Striker

  • Werner has a point to prove against England.
  • With 8 defensive players on the pitch, this gameplan only works if we don't concede first.
  • Thinking 3-4-3 myself. I’d be surprised if Saka played centrally but perhaps Southgate could try to go 3v2 on the German midfield.

    Pickford

    Walker Stones Maguire

    Trippier Rice Phillips Shaw

    Saka Kane Sterling
  • Southgate will get absolutely hammered if we go out with a whimper after fielding possibly the most defensive first XI I've ever seen from an England team.

This is either all or nothing from him.
  • Goretzka will be a bigger threat in midfield. Very mobile compared to Kroos/Gundogan. Rice and Phillips will need to be on their game against him.

Worry it'll be more 532 (can see Sterling further up than Saka), but the big concern is who is going to link the defence and attack.  Phillips?  Big ask.
  • It depends if he has given Shaw and Walker instructions to bomb on like they can. If we sit back and try to let the Germans have the front foot we lose. This is a massive day Southgate will either go down as a tactical genius or a bottle job

can't understand him not at least being on the bench, better option than Rashford

He wont go down as a tactical genius even if we win - Too many will just claim he got lucky
  • Kane has to show up today. Especially with that lineup.

Southgate is cautious so I wouldn’t be surprised to see 5-3-2/3-5-2 with Kane and Sterling up front.
    Close enough.

Southgate thinks like a Charlton manager, makes it easy to predict. Cautious like Curbs and Powell. Hopefully he’s successful like they were...
  • No DCL on the bench
Who are the other two left out?

Trippier and Saka could have some Joy down the right

    Chilwell is one of them
  • looking at the bench I reckon they'd potentially beat the starting XI

I know everyone wants to attack attack attack but that means nothing if we end up losing 4-2 a la Portugal.

We have to be careful of Gosens bombing down that left flank. If Trippier gets too far forward and is caught out of position, they will ping balls behind him to Gosens all day long. Portugal played a back four against Germany and got absolutely ran over by the German overload at the back post every single time.

In fact I’m glad Trippier is on the pitch today, probably the most solid full back we’ve got while also offering a set piece delivery threat. I feel confident about him handling that threat well.

I think the public at large would see him as a genius if we win. Beating Germany and leading us into the easiest side of the draw with only Denmark, Czechs and AN other as rivals would be very appealing.

Losing after starting this XI? There's no excuses.
