Gonna answer this with another question: what league were we in then?
We were a First Division team competing in the First Division, we are now a League One team competing in League One
And to point out we'd just finished 7th the year before and ended up finishing 12th the year we had that poor run
So surely the 7th place should have morphed into something better, not something worse?

now we are a bigger fish (yes the salary cap is more of a leveller ) but we are surely better placed than others in this league .

Some people on the marks thread will give sixes and sevens no matter what the game is like, that was atrocious last night. Stockley the only real positive. Looking forward to losing 7-6 to Rochdale at the weekend though.
Would love Paul Cook but cannot see him stepping back to league 1. If the job becomes available I hope he is number 1 on the list, would then be down to TS to show his ambition to him.
The talent in the squad means we should be doing better. Not saying world beaters but at least making the opposition earn there win, not just handing it to them.
As people have mentioned, if your Millar or Purrington and you play well and dont start the next game...it will do your head in especially Purrington, who cant catch a break at the moment.

Both last and (earlier) this season, we knew we would always compete and could beat the teams above us. Generally those in the top 6. Leeds/West Brom/Fulham.
We are now getting stuffed by teams both at the top and bottom of the league. Out thought and fought as they say.
Somewhere it's all gone wrong. Something needs changing as it's not going to click itself. Our 6 game winning streak is now looking like the anomaly this season, rather than the current 4 wins in 17 dire L1 "run".
Would love to pin all our hopes on an injury prone CB pairing, but think our problems are more than that.
I have a lot of time for Bowyer and think he deserves time with new signings, but 4-4-2 worked for us in recent weeks then we go and abandon it against our best opposition in the last month? Jake has been our best midfielder in recent weeks in the middle of a 4, as well as Pratleys performance against Fraser yet we revert back to the diamond against a similar threat in Cannon last night? Baffles me.
How is Bowyer supposed to legislate for this? Gunter has nearly 100 caps at international level but can’t be trusted with a 10 yard pass under absolutely no pressure. Bowyer not beyond criticism at all, but what is a manager supposed to do about this? It’s a pass my 5 year old daughter could make and our performances have been riddled with these kinds of errors. Just not good enough from too many players.
Because he's been shit since day one and has let him play 90 in more or less every game. Drop the fking idiot and put a kid in there if you have to. That's why Bowyers to blame.
I've backed Bowyer, I've been an optimist but now I'm just full of despair. Afraid last night was just a complete shambles and can't see how it's going to get any better.
I get the clamour for Barker. He had pretty much a fairy tale start for us. But that was pre season and not a fair indication of what the demands of a league programme are especially the current schedule.
Bowyer has to look after the player too. If Barker came in and had a mare then it could affect him long term. I think the same happened to Pigott under Powell when he played against Millwall. It was almost as if he realised how far he was away physically from the demands of the professional game and it has taken him several years to get back to his current level.
Bringing Barker into an already makeshift back four that is conceding goals for fun would be a bad move. He isn’t the answer at the moment and it would be unfair to put that on him.

1)A pull back which their guy somehow shot through a sea of red,great strike. 2)Martsaan just after we score commits a needless foul giving them the opportunity to come back straight away. 3)Watson just gives the ball away on the edge of the box,inexcusable,once again a great strike from their man. I will concede the first goal as good play by them,but 2 and 3 where just poor decisions and lax play,Matsaan should not have fouled the guy and Watson needs to take a good look at himself after what he did. Time and time again,they went through our midfield with ease,Pratley rendered himself totally ineffective after his brainless lunge(foul or not you cannot do that anymore). We did not have the outlet in the first half of Miller,how nice it would have been for Oshi and Matsaan to look up and see him in front of them,instead of constantly checking and going inside. It must be clear now,that this apparent keep it tight until the break attitude is not working,we now have 2 wingers and a centre forward who is dominant in the air,that will be our strength and we must play to it.

When we played Accrington Sky put up a stat about the number of changes to starting line ups.
In about 20/21 games we had made 58 changes, Accrington had made 14. That;'s why Accrington play as a team because they are familiar with their team mates and the formation.

It has all been said on here. Why would Bowyer not start Millar? It's incomprehensible. Why does he make these decisions? I would think 90%+ of people on here could see what a baffling decision that was. Mind-blowing actually. So, why can't Bowyer see it? Why would he choose to leave out our motm from the previous game, one that he had heralded himself in his post game press interview? Why would he do that? An absolute baffling decision. Bowyer is the expert but 90%+ of the non experts on here could see what a bad decision that was. Many called it out on the match day thread before a ball had been kicked. And, this isn't the first time he has done this kind of thing. In fact two of the players who he did it to have just recently left the club.
I think if you get into the answers to those questions you can see the personality that Bowyer has. The same personality that has made so many changes week by week to the starting lineups. The same personality that continues to not start with his best team. The same personality that has continually had to make wholesale changes at the half because we are chasing a lead and the balance is all wrong. The same personality that blames everyone or everything else but never himself. My personal opinion is that this is an arrogance that comes from Bowyer, probably because he has a too high opinion of himself from when he was a player. To the point that he will make decisions just to break the 'norm' because it's edgy or different or intelligent or whatever other adjective fits the bill in his head. No Bowyer, it's stupid. And it's stupid because it's just not working.
He's not learning is he? Not a good sign.
Exactly the way I see it. He's just trying to be too clever. That wasn't the case when he first took over, when he'd mostly pick a side 90% of the fans would agree with. As we saw with Pardew, bringing in more and more players, isn't the answer. A good manager works to get the best out of what he has and only brings in a player in order to help complete the jigsaw. That was why Curbs was such a great manager for such a long period. I also have to question the role of Johnny Jackson who seems to have gone very quiet of late. Somebody close to Bowyer needs to be acting as a counter balance and really questioning some of his daft recent decision making, such as leaving Millar out last night, for Bowyer's own good, as well as for the Club and fans.

They'd just lost 2 games on the bounce without scoring and one was an enforced change due to suspension.
We won our last game and after 7 days rest had no valid reason (that i can see) for starting without Millar and Aneke.
I'm in the minority here in not really caring about this season I think. We're coming off the back of a relegation season in the midst of a pandemic, as well as the club having to be saved in the last minute meaning we couldn't play around the salary cap. Bowyer has made some strange decisions and the football we have been playing at times is boring, but unless we get relegated, Bowyer has to be given the summer and following January window.
I'd give him 15 games of next season before reviewing. My early prediction for a new manager. Sandgaard will bring in either an unknown Dane or an American, then watch the fireworks!

Nothing TS has done to date suggests he would go down that route.

Well that was crap. Much already said, we looked poor and we changed a winning formation back to a losing one. As @golfaddick points out, once we go 1-0 down, we never win. There's something missing in this squad, something psychological. Stockley MOM, so expect him not to start against Rochdale. If I can even joke about it, it's enough tinkering. Stop it Lee. As Curbs said, credit to Portsmouth, they did a job on us and were the better team. The ref was terrible, he didn't cost us the game (that's the one strength we always play to) but he couldn't have been more biased if he'd tried. If we'd done to Pompey what they did to us on the penalty shout, he would have given it to them. Which ref we get seems a total lottery in this division - the occasional good one mixed in with the clueless, the visually impaired and now "my dad was a Pompey season ticket holder and they're all my mates".
I have berated centre backs in recent weeks, but last night wasn't down to centre backs, 1st goal comes from a wide ball into a area our midfield should be picking up players, second debatable but shit awful foul by Maatsen, third Maatsen goes missing then a cross is but back into a danger area by Matthews with the back of his foot , what the fuck happened to turning out and going down the right side, Watson then loses possession, the problem with our team goes a lot deeper than missing centre half's, our midfield is too pedestrian, we have no Cullen, Aribo, Gallagher, there is nobody driving that midfield, when do you see somebody pick up that ball and make yards into the opposition half. Purrington gets dropped after a solid display in a 1-0 win, I have read on here so many times Solly was shot to pieces and couldn't do it anymore, well a shot to pieces Solly pisses all over the performance Gunter and Matthews have served up from right back this season.
Saturday fuck the diamond off, play Purrington play Millar and DJ, PLAY Smith with one other personally Morgan or JFC, Pratley and Watson are dragging us down to play too slowly.
The Manager and players are completely bereft of confidence, it started last season and has run into this one. We no longer play with any freedom and our players fear making mistakes.
Bowyer's attitude towards attacking, flowing football isn't going to suddenly change. I had hoped he'd stopped mugging his players off to the media, he hasn't. Was Albie's decision to shoot really a poor one? Well after clipping the bar not long before probably not, sure the execution wasn't fantastic but he created enough space and another day that's on target. Under Bowyer we will continue to pass to midfield, pass to defence, pass around defence until either a mistake or a long pumped ball forward.... That is all we have style wise. We're constantly waiting for gaps to open up further up field and it's not happening, because this isn't Sunday league.
In addition to this Chuks has looked like off the boil lately, we've not adapted to play in our new striker, we've not adapted our play to allow for Washington's injury and we look all over the shop. We nick Swindon's best two players and they go on and win their next game... We know that'd be another excuse for Bowyer to have lost a game after losing two players. I'm surprised he didn't use it about Jonny, Maddison and Bogle tbh.
I'll finish by saying I liked Lee Bowyer, what he did in 18/19 was stunning, but it's been 23 wins from his last 72 games. Sure 46 of those were in the league above, but that run including a relegation would see most managers elsewhere sacked, even in spite of his challenges faced.
He hasn't stayed for us the fans or his love of CAFC, he has stayed because Southall put him on a big tasty contract with a high pay out if he were to be sacked. That has two years left on it and Lee won't walk away with that payout hovering in the background.
If he were to miraculously change his ways and we return to winning ways and made the playoffs of course I'd accept I was wrong. But it is not about to happen. I imagine when he does get sacked, he will be straight back to his fishing lakes with enough money to never have to care about Football again.

1)A pull back which their guy somehow shot through a sea of red,great strike.
2)Martsaan just after we score commits a needless foul giving them the opportunity to come back straight away.
3)Watson just gives the ball away on the edge of the box,inexcusable,once again a great strike from their man.
I will concede the first goal as good play by them,but 2 and 3 where just poor decisions and lax play,Matsaan should not have fouled the guy and Watson needs to take a good look at himself after what he did.
Time and time again,they went through our midfield with ease,Pratley rendered himself totally ineffective after his brainless lunge(foul or not you cannot do that anymore).
We did not have the outlet in the first half of Miller,how nice it would have been for Oshi and Matsaan to look up and see him in front of them,instead of constantly checking and going inside.
It must be clear now,that this apparent keep it tight until the break attitude is not working,we now have 2 wingers and a centre forward who is dominant in the air,that will be our strength and we must play to it.
When we played Accrington Sky put up a stat about the number of changes to starting line ups.
In about 20/21 games we had made 58 changes, Accrington had made 14. That;'s why Accrington play as a team because they are familiar with their team mates and the formation.
Again this isnt a revolutionary approach from Bowyer inventing a new style of Management
As we saw with Pardew, bringing in more and more players, isn't the answer. A good manager works to get the best out of what he has and only brings in a player in order to help complete the jigsaw. That was why Curbs was such a great manager for such a long period.
I also have to question the role of Johnny Jackson who seems to have gone very quiet of late. Somebody close to Bowyer needs to be acting as a counter balance and really questioning some of his daft recent decision making, such as leaving Millar out last night, for Bowyer's own good, as well as for the Club and fans.
The old style of football management is don't change a winning team !!!!!
If Bielsa can step into the championship for a couple of years, i don't think league one is beneath Paul Cook.
We won our last game and after 7 days rest had no valid reason (that i can see) for starting without Millar and Aneke.
Much already said, we looked poor and we changed a winning formation back to a losing one. As @golfaddick points out, once we go 1-0 down, we never win. There's something missing in this squad, something psychological.
Stockley MOM, so expect him not to start against Rochdale. If I can even joke about it, it's enough tinkering. Stop it Lee.
As Curbs said, credit to Portsmouth, they did a job on us and were the better team.
The ref was terrible, he didn't cost us the game (that's the one strength we always play to) but he couldn't have been more biased if he'd tried. If we'd done to Pompey what they did to us on the penalty shout, he would have given it to them. Which ref we get seems a total lottery in this division - the occasional good one mixed in with the clueless, the visually impaired and now "my dad was a Pompey season ticket holder and they're all my mates".
Bowyer's attitude towards attacking, flowing football isn't going to suddenly change. I had hoped he'd stopped mugging his players off to the media, he hasn't. Was Albie's decision to shoot really a poor one? Well after clipping the bar not long before probably not, sure the execution wasn't fantastic but he created enough space and another day that's on target. Under Bowyer we will continue to pass to midfield, pass to defence, pass around defence until either a mistake or a long pumped ball forward.... That is all we have style wise. We're constantly waiting for gaps to open up further up field and it's not happening, because this isn't Sunday league.
In addition to this Chuks has looked like off the boil lately, we've not adapted to play in our new striker, we've not adapted our play to allow for Washington's injury and we look all over the shop. We nick Swindon's best two players and they go on and win their next game... We know that'd be another excuse for Bowyer to have lost a game after losing two players. I'm surprised he didn't use it about Jonny, Maddison and Bogle tbh.
I'll finish by saying I liked Lee Bowyer, what he did in 18/19 was stunning, but it's been 23 wins from his last 72 games. Sure 46 of those were in the league above, but that run including a relegation would see most managers elsewhere sacked, even in spite of his challenges faced.
He hasn't stayed for us the fans or his love of CAFC, he has stayed because Southall put him on a big tasty contract with a high pay out if he were to be sacked. That has two years left on it and Lee won't walk away with that payout hovering in the background.
If he were to miraculously change his ways and we return to winning ways and made the playoffs of course I'd accept I was wrong. But it is not about to happen. I imagine when he does get sacked, he will be straight back to his fishing lakes with enough money to never have to care about Football again.
The difference is I bet they didn't make 4 changes the game before and the game before that and the game before that and the game before that.
