Theresa May has called a press conference for 5pm...

I wouldn't get any hopes up. Theresa May's political career is a series of opportunities to do the principled thing and subsequently completely ignoring those opportunities. Her bizarre performance today displayed her complete refusal to recognise that she has lost the support of her party, the House, and the voters. She thinks if she can keep her head down and press on until March then she is doing a good job. For better or for worse, it looks like the wheels are in motion to remove her from power. But this press conference, I predict, will simply be her reaffirming her resolute dedication to the path she has chosen. She should do the principled thing and resign, but she will not.
i know as a poster you are clearly not a fan of may, but at present the conservatives are in power how do you get a leader of a party when there is no one in the party that wants to lead?.
The pro-Remain Tories spin off as a more centrist party.

The ERG can become the new UKIP and sit at the far-right of the political spectrum.

Any Tories left can either stand down, carry on the Tory party or, maybe for the benefit of the whole country, the Tory Party can dissolve and rid the country of their ineptitude.

If there was to be a (dreadful) second vote there need only be two options.

    Theresa May's deal.
    Remain.

    Sorted

Theresa May's deal is Brexit In Name Only. In real terms it's remain.

The real question is whether any of the scumbags masquerading as our political representatives have the integrity, courage and respect for democracy to negotiate a proper deal that genuinely isn't a thinly veiled attempt to deceive those who voted LEAVE yet REMAIN by the back door.

I remember Heseltine saying within a few weeks of the referendum that the UK would not leave the EU and would adopt the Euro in due course.

I was mocked on here when I mentioned this previously but having seen the pathetic efforts (or not) of our pro REMAIN political elite to deliver the political will of the people as expressed in a referendum I think this is the direction of travel.

Democracy is dead in real terms.
It's the sort of thing that opens up the way for proper nutters to get elected like in Italy. People aren't stupid - they recognize a stitch up when they see one, but they can do stupid things out of anger when they're taken for fools.

Theresa May says brexit means brexit.
Her definition may be at odds with others, but she is in charge.
If there are other definitions they have not manifested themselves beyond opinion.
The people voted brexit, the people voted for the UK 'sovereign' Parliament causing Theresa May to be in charge.
Logic suggests then that her brexit is indeed actually brexit and it is entering with attendant fanfare (!) through the front door.
The other news is that May can be got rid of, but the May brexit would be forever.

  • It's live on BBC2.
  • Still no show from the PM.
  • edited November 2018

David Cameron should be forced to come back and own the mess he created to serve his own vanity, putting his political ego over the good of the country. What ridiculous chaos he unleashed.

With reference to Black Mirror and Cameron's own dalliance with the subject, the only way the baying mob will be satisfied with the eventual and inevitable cancellation of Brexit is if David Cameron actually does fuck a pig on live television as penance for this clusterfuck.

It could be done the other way round, though.
  • Still no show from TM. Perhaps she's perfecting her dance routine ?

Good luck finding a pig that standards that low.

Se can't decide between entering to Dancing Queen or Opps Upside Your head.
  • Still no show from the PM.

Locked herself in the loo sobbing? "Come out Prime Minister, you can't hide in there forever, you've got packing to do so Jacob can move in..."

  • I feel a bit sorry for her - She has an impossible job. I would suggest she appoints as her next Brexit secretary. somebody who supports her and not a treacherous bastard like the last two. Free advice there.
  • PM has started the conference.

With the exception of Rees-Mogg and equally lunatic brexiters. A no deal Brexit is universally condemned

Read this para from yesterdays 'left wing' Daily Mirror

'Millions of men died to give this countrt freedom and democracy to rule ourselves.
so why can't MPs and the public get behind the PM and get us out of one
of the most corrupt organistions in the world, ie the EU'

    Serious food for thought!

    Serious food for thought? Bollox.

Millions of men from many nations fought and won against tyranny and facism. The founding fathers of the EU had as one of their overiding ambitions to avoid a repeat of that, and for 73 years Europe, certainly western Europe, has been at peace.

Except in 1982. The Falklands conflict was the only deployment of exclusively EU millitary. The French assisted the Argentines and 100sof British soldiers died as a result.
The Irish maintained trading relations with the enemy.
As others have said, your statement about the French is incorrect. Your ire might be more reasonably directed against the stance taken by Israel, https://telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/23/israel-sold-weapons-to-argentina-at-height-of-falklands-war-reve/, and the Israeli decision to provide support to the Argentinian Junta during the conflict probably did cost British lives.

With regard to Ireland, as a member of the EEC, which implemented wide-ranging sanctions against Argentina, blocking all Argentinian exports to the EEC, for invading the Falklands (https://nytimes.com/1982/04/11/world/europeans-ending-argentine-imports-in-falkland-crisis.html) in contrast to the USA's more limited reaction (https://nytimes.com/1982/05/01/us/us-sides-with-britian-falkland-crisis-ordering-sanctions-against-argentines.html), any ongoing trade will only have been what the sanctions regime will have allowed.

And, as someone who cares passionately about the Falkland Islands, not doubt you support their wish for the UK to remain in the Single Market (https://independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-falklands-islands-single-market-trade-eu-fishing-loligo-squid-government-a8347696.html).

    Israel isn't in the EU
  • Neither is USA.
  • She's sticking with her deal and asking everyone to unite behind it.
  • Speech ended & now taking questions.
  • She’ll end her statement with “and finally I... am iron man” CUT TO BLACK ROLL CREDITS

    Israel isn't in the EU
But they compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. So....
