  • Surely the press would like this story to fill a few column inches.

It’s embarrassing for us but worse for our aloof mega rich owner. It’s really laughable.

Well, I will certainly be celebrating when the takeover finally happens. I’ll be in the White Swan as long as I’m still standing, ready to drink with any Charlton fan, bitch about the now gone Roland era, get excited about the future and tell stories of proper Charlton days gone by.

And I’ll be in for my ST day one. I’ll give the Aussies or anyone else who comes in the warmest of welcomes and the benefit of the doubt.

Having had 4 years of my Charlton life fucked up, I’m going to make the most of the new era.

That’s the spirit Davo, and I’ll be in the White Swan getting ratted with you, and it isn’t exactly our local is it?
And by the way I have a feeling in my ?!@“& that the fans’ bounce back is going to be huge.

In the mid 70's when Michael Gliksten was the owner we played Port Vale at home in the 3rd tier and from memory I thought there was under 4 thousand.
No social media, just local papers, phones and word of mouth.
Fans stop going when they see no ambition from owners plus we sold players from 65 to 75 that could have held there own in the top tier if we had a decent owner.
Bailey, Bonds, Glover, Campbell, Moore, kenning, Flanagan, Hales plus others coming into an established side.

I can assure younger fans we have been here before, the difference is we've a decent stadium now not a crumbling wreak of a ground.

IF we can only see the back of this flawed experiment then Adults can make their own minds up whether to invest their time, money and emotions in Cafc.

I think our lowest valley attendance back then was little more than 3k v Halifax on a Tuesday evening.

I got Stanleyed as I was close to leaving the top of Marion Wilson park. Don't know who attacked me but they weren't at the match. I guess millwall.

I never for once thought about not going again even though my artery was very close to being severed. Just shows that Roland is more destructive than a bunch of thugs with knives.

Apathy is a strong force and we shouldn't underestimate it.
I think maybe the Halifax game and not Port Vale was the match that I was trying to remember from over 40 years ago !
I can recall the Spartan isolation of that match.
Derek Hales scored a Hat-trick against Halifax on a snow covered pitch in a 3-1 win on 18th March 1975,a gate of 3001 must be the game your referring to,i was also there.
No, the 3,001 was a 1-0 win I think. I was working as a tray boy that season, walking around the perimeter track and offering Wagon wheels, Walkers crisps and Kiora drinks to all and sundry. Think I only got about £2.50 in sales that night, and they paid me £1.50 of that!

You'll get a small short term bounce, but to be sustained then winning teams primarily bring people back.

You saw that at the end of last season with the amount of people that put their principles to one side, broke their 'boycott' when we had Wembley in the offering.

Alongside that, there's got a be a big and sustained club development strategy overflowing with initiatives and offers.

    I suffer from irrepressible optimism.

Having shared that with you, I have an idea the Aussies know what needs to be done.

Yes the 3-1 win on 18th March 1975 against Halifax had a gate of 9,573 we got promoted that year, explains why the gate was so high
  • Must have been the 1-0 win on 6th March 1973 then,i was there but can't remember what the weather was like.

I seem to remember that Halifax game was a very cold and frosty night match. My memory tells me we won 3-0 in front of 3,000 people.
We stood on the big terrace, halfway line, halfway up as usual. Huge gaps around us. Dad had brought his brother along who hadn't been for years - and during the game my uncle said Third Division football was rubbish and he wasn't going again. He never did.

Yeah but I was thinking more national press. Even better Belgian press.

I also agree with above. Not so long ago supporters would of been all over this embarrassing Duchatelet far and wide,in the press on the radio on the tv there would of probably even been a song,It seems the fight has gone that he has worn us down, divided us and is still fucking us over big time,I hope as the season gets closer supporters fight returns (me included),but at the moment it feels like weve given up and can only see this getting worse, its not happening is it ?

The thing about not being allowed to turn lights on for meetings, that’s not actually true, is it?

Yes it is as is not being allowed to eat at their desks to save cleaners wages and no paper hand towels in toilets.
Have they supplied cloth towels then? Is someone tasked to take home to wash daily?

Must be a grim old place to work.
No, electric dryers which I would have thought more expensive but this is penny wise, pound foolish management Duchatelet style.
Wait, they've replaced paper hand towels in the toilets with electric dryers ?
    Right, I'm boycotting.

I support this view which why I’m so hesitant to support a long term boycott which is in danger of compounding the issue.

The problem is the basis for our support has been eroded over the years much more so by Duchatelet, which might have otherwise sustained larger crowds at this level.

The patient is going to need major surgery to recover even a fraction of the amount and type of support we had, some habits now lost may simply never be reacquired.

This is not just doom and gloom, plucked from thin air, it’s about what we saw happening in the winter after they took over approaching the first anniversary.

I hope any new owners are prepared to do something very radical in this department - I have a number of ideas as I am sure do other, but are they going to listen, who knows?

    My thoughts too, SHG.

Embarrass the old Rat again & again until the Pied Piper finally leads him over the cliff edge.

I have to add that, like others, my enthusiasm for the upcoming season is waning somewhat.

We've already decided against travelling to both the Sunderland & Accrington matches and as well as missing a home game when we go to Tenerife in October, we're also planning a 3 day trip to Disneyland Paris with the whole family which means missing another.....something we would never have considered before the Belgians came to town.

To top it all, Fanny's tingle is in terminal decline after all the false dawns of recent months.

It will take something very special to relight this particular fire.....

Keeping busy helps to take my mind off such depressing issues.

So I'm off for a bit of bush trimming.

    Ding Dong !
