In the mid 70's when Michael Gliksten was the owner we played Port Vale at home in the 3rd tier and from memory I thought there was under 4 thousand. No social media, just local papers, phones and word of mouth. Fans stop going when they see no ambition from owners plus we sold players from 65 to 75 that could have held there own in the top tier if we had a decent owner. Bailey, Bonds, Glover, Campbell, Moore, kenning, Flanagan, Hales plus others coming into an established side.
I can assure younger fans we have been here before, the difference is we've a decent stadium now not a crumbling wreak of a ground.
IF we can only see the back of this flawed experiment then Adults can make their own minds up whether to invest their time, money and emotions in Cafc.
I think our lowest valley attendance back then was little more than 3k v Halifax on a Tuesday evening.
I got Stanleyed as I was close to leaving the top of Marion Wilson park. Don't know who attacked me but they weren't at the match. I guess millwall.
I never for once thought about not going again even though my artery was very close to being severed. Just shows that Roland is more destructive than a bunch of thugs with knives.
Apathy is a strong force and we shouldn't underestimate it.
I’ll add, if 9 months ago it was announced Roland had sold I’dhave been pretty sure I would have been in a packed pub that evening celebrating like we’d won a Millwall game.
It it was announced today, it will probably generate no more than an ‘at last’ muttering.
I’m still not convinced whether a takeover or a win vs Millwall will come first.
They might end up with similar waits...
You're such an old misery ;-)
But we keep being told it’s close, it seems no closer today then it did on May 17th.
They’ll be relief when it’s done, but the celebratory mood of May has long gone
Totally agree. Some even claimed it was a done deal in February. Can't blame people being fed up with the whole affair.
We need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. The club’s trajectory has been downwards for four years, probably a lot longer. It was never going to be as simple as pressing a button and ‘lift off!’. I think we might be about to halt The Long Decline (obscure band reference there), and at least head the club slowly, oil tanker-like, back in the right direction. This isn’t an instant gratification scenario, unfortunately.

To turn the ‘tanker’ you need to buy the effing club. The Aussies don’t even appear to be in the Port let alone have their hands on the wheel.

That may be true.
But you’ve only got another two days before your good vibrations go Surfin USA for the 20th time.
Well, I will certainly be celebrating when the takeover finally happens. I’ll be in the White Swan as long as I’m still standing, ready to drink with any Charlton fan, bitch about the now gone Roland era, get excited about the future and tell stories of proper Charlton days gone by.
And I’ll be in for my ST day one. I’ll give the Aussies or anyone else who comes in the warmest of welcomes and the benefit of the doubt.
Having had 4 years of my Charlton life fucked up, I’m going to make the most of the new era.

So it’s all the Aussies’ fault that the club was in such a legal mess?
I’m pretty sure if they’d bought any other club it would have been done and dusted a long time ago.
Remember the fine words of the great Russell Slade (but leave out the Louis bit).
With the news regarding the cost cutting measures, it has expunged one myth put out by some non- boycotters. Namely that witholding monies from RD makes little or no difference.
I am almost tempted to trawl old posts to "name and shame", but on second thoughts I realise I am getting grumpy because of the ongoing situation -)

I think maybe the Halifax game and not Port Vale was the match that I was trying to remember from over 40 years ago ! I can recall the Spartan isolation of the terracing.
Never mind about withholding money, fans should add to costs. Maybe we could start with a campaign of faxing them black paper documents with a tiny white bit so as to use up their printer ink. Another campaign is to purchase stuff especially food, then demand money back because it is vile. If they are concerned about costs of cleaning stuff well extra dirt might keep cleaners in employment.
A lot of savings could be made by sacking Cojones and sending his car back.
Mr Belgian guy this is the trajectory:
Informal verbal warning. Formal verbal warning. Written warning. Final warning. Dismissal.

The thing about not being allowed to turn lights on for meetings, that’s not actually true, is it?
Yes it is as is not being allowed to eat at their desks to save cleaners wages and no paper hand towels in toilets.
Have they supplied cloth towels then? Is someone tasked to take home to wash daily?
Must be a grim old place to work.
No, electric dryers which I would have thought more expensive but this is penny wise, pound foolish management Duchatelet style.
Surely depends how long you keep your hands under them. Which is why clever old Roland is flying in a Belgium bog specialist Sunday-Thursday to ensure no staff member uses more than 3-seconds per palm

It sounds mental but outside of the allotted staff pee-pee times he also checks that all lightbulbs are extinguished so it really does save the club money...

A facilities manager once told me that electric dryers are a really bad idea. He explained that as you rub your hands dry the bits of dead skin, etc get trapped in a paper towel. Air dryers blow all the skin debris and God knows what else around for other people to breath in. (Probably explains why a player is off sick with pneumonia.)

Although following this through, if you’re not allowed lights on in the bogs and he’s gotten rid of all the cleaners then I wouldn’t be working there without a big bottle of dettol at my desk and a loofah....

Derek Hales scored a Hat-trick against Halifax on a snow covered pitch in a 3-1 win on 18th March 1975,a gate of 3001 must be the game your referring to,i was also there.
When pausing for a drink during matches players should be given tap water in ceramic teacups, as they are re useable and plastic wouldn't be generated. The players to supply (and wash) their own cups, which would have their names painted on by local schoolchildren following a community scheme art outreach project.
Can’t really believe what I’m reading to be honest.
Are the club so short of money that the need to save what must be the price of a bottle of a decent wine per month requires these quite frankly embarrassing cost cutting edicts.
I can’t help thinking that this is not coming from the very top but being instigated by some prattish middle manager who just likes throwing their weight around and is petty to the point of being ridiculous. Do we have anyone who fits that description I wonder. I wouldn’t know.

I hope there’s no messing around with paying salaries on time.
