Are we the world's worst run club yet?

We must be getting close. Is there a trophy for that?
Great idea, perhaps we could spend some donation money on a big shiny trophy, commission a well known celebrity and have a formal ceremony at the valley gates.
Can we do what Arsenal do and make our own trophy? The Betdaq cup? We'd probably lose on pens anyway...
  • I know it's the first game of the season and tbf I'm in a grumpy mood as it is but come on...... my soul is fucking aching. This shit has to end soon, we just don't deserve what is happening to our club.

I agree with you mate and share your pain but the thing is the deluded old fool is so stinking rich he can just front it out if he wants to. We just have to get under his skin so much that he throws the towel in by showing him up for what he is, in his own backyard.

Yes. We get a life-size stuffed Belgian, with a selection of sixty phrases, all in broken English, and all untrue. Blackpool got one last year and Meire is curently tring to buy it to play on the left wing.

  • Why? Do we now get 15 chips per portion?

    I don't know about that but I understand Rojo has p*ssed on his chips this afternoon;

  • Again full marks to those of you who made the trip. Hardly an auspicious start but not exactly unexpected and we have to give time for the new boys to settle in. If Slade didn't realize before what a big job he has to turn things around then he does now. I fear however that things will get worse before they get better.

  • Heard a rumour at the game today that Slade almost quit during the week.

Few more bits happening and he may well do..
  • The three thousand home fans are in for a treat next week.

...when we win comfortably 4-0 ;-)
  • This league is all about full backs clipping the line. It's been like it for fucking ages. So you have to have players in midfield that pick up the pieces. Don't think we done it once. Foley and Croft will no doubt be good squad additions but they are not a centre midfield pairing by a long shot.

We've already tried that, we lost on penalties

Just seen the goals on SSN could only see the end of the penalty incident which looked clumsy by Pearce number 16 who then got out jumped for the second although their player was all over him.
  • After over 50 years of support this is the first time that I am ashamed to be a Charlton supporter because that display was awful, the tactics were wrong, they didn't play as a team and there was no support on the bench, just kids.

The only good was Rudd, Pearce, Holmes and Solly, Ajose was starved, Novak was not match fit, Fox was Fox and the rest were rubbish. Why play high balls down the middle then your striker is short and opposition is tall, it just didn't make sense.

I hate what the Belgians have gone to our club but feel it will have to get worse before it gets better.
  • Kevin Foley starting in central midfield with Crofts , Jackson on the left and Lookman on the bench resulted in zero pace, energy or creativity in one of the dullest halves of football I've ever seen. I thought Slade may have changed it at half time as 1,000+ Addicks could see the problem.

We started the second half brilliantly. Ricky Holmes is a quality little player, and his teammates know it. Everything was going through him. He had no support or movement around him whatsoever, which is to be expected when you've got a journeyman of a full back in the midfield. Fox put an excellent cross over for Novak at 0-0 and he just couldn't stretch enough to stick it in. Think Gazza at Euro '96.

Novak looks a handful, and even though he couldn't quite connect with our two best chances, at least he found the space and created the opportunities for himself. Ajose was nonexistent but he has no midfield behind him. Those two could form a good partnership but this team has a long way to go.

Final word to our fans. We were excellent. Quite simply, one of the best away turnouts in years. Everyone was in good voice with some great songs flowing. Non-stop singing, and we even had some bagpipes to accompany Valley Floyd Road. Nothing but 100% support for the boys....and then Johnson, conning a living, tells a group to f*ck off. Our supporters are, and always will be the heartbeat of OUR club and tools like him are everything that's wrong with it at the moment. We deserve better, much, much better. Russel Slade couldn't even be bothered to come over and thank us. Pretty poor that.

Katrien probably put the block on it

  • Solly is absolute class. In some ways I feel sorry for him that either his height or his injurys have held him back. In an afternoon of complete dog turd he's always the one that manages to pick you up. I fucking love him.

though im grateful he's still with us but for a player of his class and professionalism I would of loved to see him move up and away from what the Belgians have created at our club. and im sure he would of had it not been for his injuries.

Fair play to those who went. Nothing but respect to you. It's gonna be a long season judging by what I listened to on the radiogram
  • Belgian millionaire electronics magnates haven't the first fucking clue on how to run football clubs!

    Value the basics.
  • Got to the game 20 min late bcos of traffic and it didn't get better we where awful

We need to keep the pressure on and it needs to be clever , (like last year) hopefully "the final push" will return our club to us and former glory.

  • That was every bit as dispiriting as I feared.

The lack of squad depth was made painfully obvious by the fact that our bench was composed entirely of academy products, of whom only Lookman and to a lesser extent Holmes-Dennis have made an impact in the first team. As things stand, we are going absolutely nowhere; talented though the young guns may be, it's unfair to ask them to bear the brunt of League 1 football in all its physicality.

The one new signing who stood out, Holmes, only served to lay bare how little creativity we have in the rest of the midfield. Jackson's best days are behind him, and by the looks of things so are Crofts's. Foley was neat and tidy but contributed little going forward. Bizarrely, this is the one area of the squad we have cover in (and that's without considering Ba and Kashi). A fat lot of good it'll do with so little attacking threat.

As a consequence of this, the prospects of getting the best out of Ajose are slim. He needs chances to be created for him, and bar one chance in the first half smothered by the Bury keeper, and one tame shot from distance, he had none. Novak struggled to do anything right and when he had his only chance was just unable to reach a low cross from Fox. Lookman did OK and Hanlan put himself about a bit, but by then it was too late. The only time we looked like we might score was straight after half time, but in the end all our pressure amounted to was a few dangerous crosses which the Bury defence was able to clear.

Rudd looked pretty good and is exactly what we desperately needed. Pearce put in a no-frills, no-nonsense display which bodes well, Fox was decent enough and Solly was superb, particularly in the second half. That just leaves Johnson. Any positivity he might have taken from a vaguely-not-terrible performance was lost by his appalling outburst at a fan at the end. He really does seem to be a pretty poor excuse for a human being, and the sooner Bauer comes back the better.

The travelling fans were in good voice and only turned at the end, which was as much a result of Bury's time-wasting as anger at Roland. Kudos to the bagpiper, but he was fighting an uphill battle to get the fans to sing Valley Floyd Road at the right speed. Slow down, please!

Today was a reminder of how poor League 1 football is. Bury are not a good side, but we are no better, and Slade has possibly the biggest job of his career on his hands to turn us around. It seems like we'll be plying our trade at places like Bury for a long time yet.

    A very good post.

Picking up on your point, we have a lot of defensively minded midfielders and almost no creativity in the side. It baffles me that we have Gobern on trial and are apparently about to sign Thompson. Both are more box-to-box, but neither are known for their creativity or goals. How many holding midfielders does one side need?
