Reports of trouble between both sets of fans after the game as they mingled after the match.

Really was handbags at 10 paces.
Fair enough always two sides to a story but the Bury fans definitely not happy with both sets of fans being let out simultaneously.
Why should fans not be allowed out together?

We were drinking in the little social club at the ground before and after the match and there was no trouble there at all, the Bury fans after the match were very sympathetic to our situation.

Very poor today from start to finish. A decent shot from Ajose and Holmes is not enough to deserve anything over 90mins. Didn't think much of Bury but they clearly know how to scrap at this level. Good day out, one of best atmospheres in a long time. People may say it's only the first game, give it time but I saw nothing out there to warrant any signs of optimism.

Waited around after the game too with a few others by the club shop right next to the team coach. Let's just say I didn't get the feeling the mood within the camp was as great as Slade makes out. Not fair to name names but a few interesting comments from the players too.

Shame we had to leave before Johnson arrived. That man is a disgraceful to football.

This may have been covered further down so apologies if so but no need to name players just tell us the comments made please.

I don't have a problem with that because I've never looked for trouble after a match. I wasn't there but according to a Bury fan on the radio, some of ours were up for it and it would appear that in the past their club has kept higher risk visiting fans back which in hindsight he deems us to be!

It may have been something over nothing, a few of the Danny Dyer types getting lairy maybe, what was your take on it?
  • I would say it was lively without being over threatening, I was offered out by a lad 25 years younger and offered a beer by someone my age, there were no really issues and plenty of police about. He said they had had a spat by Millwall last year and that Bolton fans had told them we were as bad!

I hope that's not true, we don't want our away games ending up like the sort of experience Millwall fans have, marched to the stadium by police, corralled into one pub etc
  • It was one bloke in his 40's that said it and probably dates back to the cup QF a good few years ago now

Whilst in no way would I condone "up close & personal " contact with opposing fans, our current situation means that feelings are running extremely high.

And with many passionate Addicks boycotting home matches but vowing to travel away to support our team, the atmosphere is always going to be charged ....and more so when we're losing.

Bury would have viewed a victory yesterday as something a bit special ....taking the scalp of an ex Premier team & hence their fans were up for some banter from early into the game.

TBH, I was surprised there was no " Premiership ? You're 'avin a laugh!" chants from the home areas.

It may or may not have been mentioned earlier but there was several chants of "We want Roland out!" from the faithful which garnered a far bit of support from the faithful. And these will surely increase if performances on the pitch fail to live up to our expectations.

Unrest, leading to more serious conflict with taunting opposition fans is totally the fault of the current regime. End of.

And I know that Lifers will NOT require any further explanation of that statement.

We haven't been in the Premier League for a decade now, I doubt it crosses many fans of othe clubs minds when they consider us more than say it crosses your mind when you think of, say, Bradford or Wigan.
IMHO, football fans are like elephants.

    They never forget.

  • Also loud, tribal and capable of producing unbelievable amounts of [REDACTED]
  • Some of the Charlton fans were a real embarrassment yesterday but I did enjoy one of the miscreants being throttled by a steward, fully deserved imo. Was staggered how few police and stewards were present behind the goal when the protests got vocal, didn't see any trouble outside the ground apart from a few badly parked police cars and a van.

Towards the end of the match there seemed a real possibility that the supporters congregating at the front of the stand were going to do something very silly. The atmosphere was toxic to say the least. Then for a while on the way back to Bury interchange it was like being back in the seventies. Screaming police cars, the thud of rampaging feet and kids eagerly looking for a scrap. My ten year old lad had the misfortune to see a Bury supporter on the ground, clearly in distress, being kicked by a Charlton mob. It was shameful and something I never thought I'd see from our fans.
  • The club is rotten to the core.
Nothing will change until these arseholes leave.

All in all it was good day out spoilt only by some awful football and a bad result. A good travelling support encouraged to keep things going by the close proximity of the Bury contingent. The Bury players were up for it because they probably see Charlton as their cup match against the bigger team, get used to it. The Charlton players didn't appear to have a lot of idea of where the ball was going once they'd released it, a few games into the season should sort that out though bringing in a few more signings will mean there will be times between now and mid September when team mates won't be where those pass are made to. Rudd's first catch of the ball was was purposeful and commanding and means that's something we no longer need to be so concerned about. I liked that Holmes chap, put a lot of effort in yesterday. Solly looked a different class, but then so he should in L1. The second half looked much better but still not quite good enough. Had the ball been put in the back of the net from that cross by Lookman I think we would have gone on to win it comfortably. I saw the makings of an altercation after the game with a couple of Herbert's being chased around a car but it seemed to come to nothing and a large copper was quickly on the scene. The amount of police cars outside the ground and chasing around afterwards was probably more to do with it being a very a quiet afternoon and everybody in the local nicks wanting something to do. I liked a comment I overheard on the tram back to Manchester from a young girl who said to her mate that United must have been playing when fans, some with red shirts were filling the tram up. There was a good turnout though I did wonder about the '1,015' figure and whether it seemed a bit on the low side.

Bad scene, not nice that your young lad had to see that. It was Handbags, but scary for youngsters nonetheless. No place for it.

It was a bit toxic down at the front, but for the most part it was pure anger and frustration at what people were watching for 90 mins. Then that wonderful human being Mr Johnson decided he would do his bit to stoke the fire....that was the trigger point for a lot of people.

  • Centre mid is such a key position, and we've lacked decent players there for years. Need a couple of good quality in there otherwise this will be a shite season. Lack of planning is clear for all to see.
  • I can confirm Mr Otto is THE man.

    His round came to £28!

A shame that he suffers from memory loss resulting in calling me about 10 times for directions to the boozer.

I was more tolerant than usual as I was waiting for the freebie.

SG3TOSE7, arsenetatters, charltonnick and robroy can vouch for Mr Otto being sound.

ClemSnide is a cool dude as well.

Any chance of having the change from the £40 back?

I apologise to any of this group who I may have offended.....I don't usually drink. Mr Otto is a bad influence.

You should know that we would have been there much earlier, but his ridiculous bladder meant we had to get off the tram at Heaton Park and then get a cab. The cab had a knackered gear box and drove slower than we were walking! He also drove straight past the pub and didn't notice!

At least we got you an audience with your nemisis!
  • Did you have a good evening @Clem_Snide @ricky_otto couldn't of been worse than the day!

Ran out of steam around 10pm. Mr Otto may have gone and got himself a kebab.

Forgot we were talking to you guys all the way home! Apparently Ms Meire was on our train. Good job we didn't know as those coppers and the delightful young ladies from Stoke may have had a real reason to get upset!

  • Spike briefly to Katrien before the game .. she assured me that four new faces would be in before the end of the August window .. I asked why we now had a surplus of central defenders and a dearth of midfielders .. no reason given other than 'Russell is working hard to get experienced play makers into the club'

Bury outmuscled us, out pressed us, out long balled us and out short passed us .. the new bright hopes Ajose and Holmes are small, we need some bulk, especially in midfield .. our defence was adequate but had no respite as the ball kept coming back (all together now) as midfield and attack were just incapable of retaining the ball .. Johnson was hard pushed to restrain the big unit who is Tom Pope (no relation) .. Pearce was another who was a bit off the pace .. he'll improve bit we need Bauer who Katty Kat assured me will be fit by the end of the month .. as for Tex ? .. no comment

(talking of big UNITS, Cameron, the Bury central defender is the size and build of a rugby No8 and the pace of a winger, he was outstanding and was rightly awarded the M o m by the Bury 'jury')

Jackson is too slow now as an attacker, his role must be tom play in front of defence .. Crofts and Foley are neither creative, skilful nor aggressive enough for the middle .. Holmes will be well OK
We looked semi dangerous only when Lookman and Hanlan came on, neither Novak nor Ajose looked fit enough after injury .. panic selections from Slade ?

Rudd looks OK and made one outstanding save

A nasty atmosphere developed during and after the game especially after we went behind and when Neil Danns took a 'head injury' dive just as Lookman all alone, controlled the ball on the edge of their area, the Bury ground at our end is 'open plan' and easy for fans to get VERY close to the pitch and the players .. a lot of CAFC fans took advantage of this situation .. referee Miller let a lot go and was finicky over the small stuff ...

Walking back to the car I saw a couple of Bury fans with nasty head wounds calling out some CAFC fans .. don't know how they got their injuries .. the Greater Manchester Police turned up in force as a lot of fans were getting VERY agitated .. some flares were thrown from our end during the game, not good at all.

all in all a disappointing start for the 1,000+ Addicks fans who made the trip on a glorious summer day .. I dare say there will be a few hundred less at Walsall
