Spike briefly to Katrien before the game .. she assured me that four new faces would be in before the end of the August window .. I asked why we now had a surplus of central defenders and a dearth of midfielders .. no reason given other than 'Russell is working hard to get experienced play makers into the club'
Bury outmuscled us, out pressed us, out long balled us and out short passed us .. the new bright hopes Ajose and Holmes are small, we need some bulk, especially in midfield .. our defence was adequate but had no respite as the ball kept coming back (all together now) as midfield and attack were just incapable of retaining the ball .. Johnson was hard pushed to restrain the big unit who is Tom Pope (no relation) .. Pearce was another who was a bit off the pace .. he'll improve bit we need Bauer who Katty Kat assured me will be fit by the end of the month .. as for Tex ? .. no comment
(talking of big UNITS, Cameron, the Bury central defender is the size and build of a rugby No8 and the pace of a winger, he was outstanding and was rightly awarded the M o m by the Bury 'jury')
Jackson is too slow now as an attacker, his role must be tom play in front of defence .. Crofts and Foley are neither creative, skilful nor aggressive enough for the middle .. Holmes will be well OK We looked semi dangerous only when Lookman and Hanlan came on, neither Novak nor Ajose looked fit enough after injury .. panic selections from Slade ?
Rudd looks OK and made one outstanding save
A nasty atmosphere developed during and after the game especially after we went behind and when Neil Danns took a 'head injury' dive just as Lookman all alone, controlled the ball on the edge of their area, the Bury ground at our end is 'open plan' and easy for fans to get VERY close to the pitch and the players .. a lot of CAFC fans took advantage of this situation .. referee Miller let a lot go and was finicky over the small stuff ...
Walking back to the car I saw a couple of Bury fans with nasty head wounds calling out some CAFC fans .. don't know how they got their injuries .. the Greater Manchester Police turned up in force as a lot of fans were getting VERY agitated .. some flares were thrown from our end during the game, not good at all.
all in all a disappointing start for the 1,000+ Addicks fans who made the trip on a glorious summer day .. I dare say there will be a few hundred less at Walsall
Hmmm 4 new faces after selling of how many in the team ? Of what quality will be the replacements ? I need the evidence / concrete actions before I believe anything of what Meire says to be true. Meire has dissembled far too often. I do not trust Meire one iota.
Out muscled and depressed. That was in Greater Manchester in August. Look forward performing when the frozen north kicks in. Ah well, not worth thinking about. Lets hope for an indian summer to at the very least sustain travelling support.

Bury seemed more up for the game first half. Second half we started well without creating too much . Penalty given and that was it . My lad was mascot so met players in changing room before kick off , didn't seem a happy camp at all , very little chat/banter and Slade standing outside. Didn't see any trouble after the match but heard a few sirens.

I stood right near the players as they finished their on pitch warm up .. they seemed to be OK together but of course with so many new faces !! ... I suspect their silence was due to serious nerves and tensions .. we were expected to win this and the team and manager were all on a hiding to nothing .... malheureusement, zero/nada/nothing/rien was what they and we got ..
I hope your son enjoyed his day .. he'll never forget it that's for sure ((:>)

0.5% Top two ......... 12.5% 3rd-6th ......... 50% 7th-12th ......... 34% 13th-20th ........ 3% Unchartered footballing territory for Charlton as the apologists continue to lap up the freaks experiment

If anyone was optimistic about the season before the game, then they probably need to wake up. If anyone is optimistic about the season today - then there's absolutely no hope for you and I'd consider seeing a doctor.
Solly - shows what a poor division this is, Solly looked like a Prem player compared to Bury
Johnson - I don't know what to make of this guy, we don't seem to win when he plays.
Pearce - Brilliant. This guy is a proper CB, like Morro or Tex.
Fox - looked OK, but I noticed JJ covering him a few times, just in case.
Holmes - tricky with the ball and will take a man on. Not something we have seen much of.
Foley - Didn't create anything of note.
Crofts - ditto.
Jackson - Jacko was a bit subdued, but was poaching around the box when we attacked.
Novak - Not sure he is going to come good, but will wait and see.
Ajose - just get the ball to him lads - it's not rocket science.
Lookman - should have started the game and just supplied Ajose.
Hanlan - no time to do anything, but I reckon he is going to come good.
Worrying that we all know what our best team is but RS doesn't.
At HT you could see it was crying out for Looky and Holmes to keep putting the ball in the box fro Ajose. These 3 players should have started the game.
Taking Ajose off for Looky was baffling, and Holmes didn't work as well in the centre to replace Foley, so that Hanlon could come on. We had pressured their goal for the first ten minutes of the second half and a goal looked likely, but the Ajose change removed the threat somewhat and we conceded shortly afterwards.
1000 Charlton fans gave the lads fantastic support, and put the Bury fans to shame. We were rewarded with the same tripe we have been watching for 2 years and odd team selection which is probably done by Roland.
Cheltenham is a nothing match, but Northampton will have a stroll next Saturday unless the players liven up a bit.
The Bury manager said on the radio afterwards that "Charlton shouldn't panic after one defeat" - but let me tell you folks, that was pants, and if that's the best we can do after 3 weeks of preparation then we are in for a bumpy ride.

I really was optimistic before the game but yesterday was really odd, we weren't just rubbish - I'm used to that - but yesterday we were just so passive, no impetus at all. That's really worrying.

That is exactly how we've been all pre-season.
For me the problem stems from central midfield. There is no energy there. Its the position that should set the tempo for the team. It is doing that at the moment, unfortunately it is pedestrian and it is affecting all the players. Perhaps Thompson will solve the issue.

This has been the problem for the last few seasons, really. Jackson isn't up to the pace and Cousins, for all his good qualities, was awful in possession. Diarra's great in DM and Ba had his moments (defensively) but it's been so long since we had someone in there capable of dictating play
It was utter tripe. I can't remember who posted about us being there but not doing anything. Like a journeyman boxer looking to not get knocked out. That's what we were doing against Bury. Who while being tenacious offered next to nothing creativily. And we managed to be worse.
Support was brilliant. We've got our set of wind up merchants who were happy antagonising Burys set of wind up merchants and by the sounds of it did some pavement dancing on the way out. The players cannot blame a lack of support for that crap showing.
Fox, Solly, Lookman, Rudd and Holmes were ok. Rudd made a fantastic save in the second half, Holmes was positive, Fox was solid defensively and put some good crosses in. The rest were not at the races which is pretty unforgiveable. Jackson is only a left midfielder with a whippet behind him and as positive as Fox tries to be his pace doesn't threaten.
I hate the arseholes running us into the ground and the fans are getting nasty with each other more and more. If they go we will see a change in attitude from the playing staff and a sense of togetherness again.
It was pointed out before the game, no foreigners in the team.
Good thing, would hate for someone to come along and have technical quality and say, a range of passing and vision. At least we got stuck in and had and commitment and desire to fight for the shirt...oh.

Quite worrying at 1-0 down there was just no urgency or fight or ideas. Just casually passing the ball across the back four.
Over the past 32 months or so the culture and nature of Charlton fans seems to be altering too as a reaction to events. We are a fractured and diffuse and angry bunch now, and all the family fun days in the world won't heal things.

That's because they are in short supply and the decent teams snap them up unlike goalkeepers who as you know are two a penny .
Goals against us came from two excellent corners! Nicely floated into the box!! Sorry I noticed this because I enjoy watching the ball being kicked property! ! Like a Barca or Real player would ! Basically I haven't seen that since Buyens or Bulot! Weird I know!
