    Seating

What kind of atmosphere are you looking for?

It's a bit more energetic in the Upper North, lots of singing and standing. You mention simply enjoying football though, I've enjoyed the views in most parts of the ground to be quite honest; I'd go for East Stand towards the front if you want to feel 'close' to the action, or Upper West if you like a bit of height. Both of these stands are probably ideal if you just want to come, sit down and take in the match.

Season Ticket boycott aside, it may be worth trying out different areas of the ground to begin with - although there may be some issues getting tickets without a purchase history to begin with, especially if there are bigger protests planned. I'm not sure how late you can get a ST, but if you could take in 2 or 3 matches in each stand first you may be end up getting somewhere that suits you; although if you do that for half the season you could just opt for half season tickets in Feb.

North Lower is also decent, but I haven't mentioned that as they've got really cheap ST prices this year - so I would presume they're basically gone, or you wont be able to get 3 together.

    Drinking

Similarly, as for drinking pre-match, @MrLargo suggests the "Anchor & Hope" which is a decent little pub on the River. The other one I used to go, not that I've been there in a while sadly, is "The Bugle Horn" up in Charlton Village. Both are decent, although I'm not sure what will be easiest and en route for you?

If you're around Royal Wharf (nice area by the way, I like it around there) then the Anchor & Hope is straight across the river from you. I'm guessing the DLR is your best bet? If so, if you go in towards Greenwich there are a few buses that go nearby. The Bugle Horn may be a bit of a ball-ache as it's out of your way.

    Players to watch

Tough, as I have we have no idea who will still be here.

On the assumption that most of our recent signings go, I'd keep an eye out for some of our ex-academy lads:

    - Callum Harriott, LM but seems to be play a CF role at times. He's tricky and can be decent to watch, but sometimes he's just frustrating.

    - Chris Solly, RB and struggles with a knee injury. When he's fit and has the right state of mind he's a brilliant player to watch though.

    - Jordan Cousins, an energetic centre-mid. He's not flashy or tricky, but he's got a great engine on him and disrupts play quite well - will be surprised if he stays.

    Other things to know

Attitudes in different parts of the ground are much different, and this can be seen by the reception to the protests. Largely we're a friendly bunch though, but if you stick around on here long enough you'll see we also dig out our own fans quite a bit.. a bit weird.

The protests are great fun! But they also have a point. We've had our current owners for 2 years and their mismanagement may have got us relegated, but it's also removed some of the character from our club - and created a real void in the relationship between the fans and the club. We've been lied too numerous times by the club staff, we've had Charlton legends treated very poorly and our CEO - who is woefully inept and unqualified - seems to enjoy inciting anger from the fans when she see's them. Oh, and our owner has only ever seen us play twice, and took to our official club site to post a rather inflammatory message aimed at us.

Boycott aside, don't even bother thinking about drinking or eating in the club anyway - it's a bit naff, and I'm surprised it took all these protests for them to finally get hit with people avoiding them. The running joke is you only get 14 chips per portion, they run out of hot drinks within 10 minutes, if you just want a pint then by the time you've got served the game has kick-off already (genuinely used to take 15 minutes to queue up for a pint in some parts) and the pies sell out too quick and can be a bit hit-and-miss. No veggie food either I believe.

With that in mind, grab a pint or two before the match at one of the pubs - and then get some food down you from the street sellers or local chippies on the way.

Owners will come and go though, and don't let that put you off getting involved at the club. We need people taking an interest in us now more than ever! ;)
  • Read Back to the Valley and The Charlton Men. Good primers. I found.

This is a lie, there is no height rule in the Upper West, I'm only 5'8'' and I have been there for years, just remember to bring your blanket and thermos!!
  • In the words of Van Gaal... You sex masochist!
  • The Addicks are a very friendly and family club, despite the current unrest. Hopefully happier times will come soon. As my name implies, I come down, sorry, one comes up to London, to matches from Suffolk, Sole Bay is on the coast around Southwold, another town like Bournemouth, and Eastbourne, one of God's waiting rooms. The tie with Charlton, even from up there, too hard to break. I know the area in which you now live, (I used to be a London cab driver, and have been there many times.) The Anchor was a real old dockside pub at one time, now ,sadly no docks Now, for fine days it has an outside drinking area, where you can enjoy a drink, and watch the river traffic go bye, as well as get a good view of the Dome and that funicular thing that crosses the Thames. And if you intend to sit in the lower West stand, don't forget your thermos and blanket!
  • The fact your 41 means that you must be going through a mid life crisis, dont worry your strange desire to support Charlton will soon pass ;)

    Thank Sole Bay, much appreciated.

Tony, with respect, do you really "know your football?" It's not as if Charlton have just been formed! And there is this great thing called the internet if you want to research the Addicks (that's our nickname by the way).

I apologise if you are genuine but your post just stinks the place out. How can you just summon up passion for something you know nothing about?!

    Isn't this the Internet?

My wife and I have recently moved to East London and have decided to adopt Charlton as our new club (nearest geographically) and will be signing up for season tickets for 2016/17. It'll never replace our home town club (AFCB), but as we intend living locally for the next 20 years we wanted to follow a club that we could passionately get behind and attend matches. So, my question is ...... what do I need to know about CAFC? I know my football, but not so much about your team and club. Who's the players to watch? Why all the protests? Where to drink before a game? Whats the best stand to get our season tickets in (2 adults and a 14 year old!)? You get the idea, please help!! Thanks

Thank you Tony!!!! I've been telling everybody on here for years that Charlton is more East than South London. Rivers and postcodes mean nothing geographically.
  • Do you like Belgium?
Are you any good at knocking on doors?
  • Have driven a few locos down on the Bluebell Railway years ago, and saw this one when it came to Sheffield Park. I just stood there wishing I could get my grubby hands on it. Driving that down the main line- nearly wet myself thinking about it

If you are genuine, don't buy a season ticket, there will be plenty of seats available and you can't try before you commit to the club or particular stands or seats.

Rose of Denmark is a good pre and post pub.

Thanks Kap10, but my wife is pushing to do season tickets (and I'm not complaining at that!) so we're keen to commit. Had a look round the stadium on Sunday afternoon (kiddies tournament was on so we walked in!!) and liked what we saw. Appreciate the football may have been poor this season and that you've been lied to by the owners ...... but thats not putting us off! AFCB went through all this and eventually found a decent owner to invest and move the club forward. I'm confident Charlton will also turn the corner ..... perhaps the appointment of Chris Wilder will improve the on pitch performances. He's worked wonders at Northampton whilst they've been struggling financially.
Get tickets in the West stand then. You'll be right at home with the rest of the crowd that don't care about the plight of the club and just want to watch some football. Don't forget to buy flasks and blankets.
Oi - some of us West Standers protest too WCA.
  • Visit the Charlton Athletic Museum, everything you need to know is there.

Leyton Orient will be a lot closer

Probably quite similar distance - a short DLR from pontoon dock to woolwich arsenal (3 or 4 stops) and away you go, southeastern, bus or walk! Orient would be a bit more of an arse, DLR to Stratford and then central line

These last two years have changed me! I've gone from being a laid back guy who would give anyone the time of day to someone who trusts nobody particularly new posters on Charlton Life. I fully expect Tony to get us all onside in the next few weeks and then, when we're suitably softened, he'll start blabbing out pro Roland and Katrien messages.

As I said already, I'll happily apologise and buy him and his family a drink* if he's a genuine fellow looking to bring himself and the family down to the happy Valley for the next 20 years. But, reading that last sentence back, can you blame me for having doubts?!

    * This is a genuine offer so please private message me a few games into next season @tonyb1974 .

Tony, do you happen by chance to work in the finance team at Charlton?

Might be worth watching this excellent video to understand us a bit better

    I'm not pro anyone!!!

I'm a football fan wanting to support my new local team. Over time my passion and love for Charlton will grow ..... but at the moment all I want is to watch football and enjoy my saturday afternoons. Who owns the club and how its run is not my initial concern, over time that will change, but at this point I dont have an opinion on the owners!!

When can I cash in that drink offer????
  • You're aware of course that there isn't any "football" until mid-August now right? Unless you count the Euro's and if you do then you are required to support Belgium there (shame about Kompany isn't it?), it's on the T's and C's of your season ticket...

    Only 87 days Fumbluff!!!!

And I'm English ...... not supporting any of that Belgian rubbish ;-)

How have you enjoyed your 1st day aboard the dysfunctional fun bus?

Its been quite mild really, will Wilder come will he not, will Nobby Vinegar get the job.

The good news there is an unpholstery van in the car park so its seems the sofa is getting repaired - at least something positive for you to reflect on.

    Up the Addicks.
