If this is the correct "card", would the boxing experts recommend getting to their seats for the first fight, or going to the pub first ?

    Joshua vs. Povetkin fight card
Anthony Joshua vs. Alexander Povetkin for Joshua's IBF, WBA and WBO Heavyweight titles
Luke Campbell vs. Yvan Mendy; Lightweights
Marty Askin vs. Lawrence Okolie for Askin's British Cruiserweight title
Sergey Kuzmin vs. David Price, 10 rounds; Heavyweights
Shakhram Giyasov vs. Julio Laguna, 6 rounds; Welterweights

    That's a pathetic PPV card .
Is it though? Luke Campbell put up a hell of a performance against Linares.
Okolie is a good solid cruiser weight who headlined a show recently.
David Price put up a good fight against Povetkin and even rocked him so who knows what could happen with him.

Can’t comment on the other one cos I ain’t a scooby about em

It's not the worst card he's ever put together but it's a piss take again he's doing another pay per view and people swallow his bullshit about needing to do PPV to put half decent cards together. Nonsense.

The lack of interest in tickets sums the show up. Povetkin is a drug cheat, is going to blow out of his arse if he lasts beyond 3 rounds and the rest of the card is not exciting.

Hearing that tickets sales are really poor Wembley currently only expecting 40k. Would be a massive fail by Eddie Hearn. And a kick back against these poor undercards he keeps putting on.

Saying that I'm going and buzzing for it. War Askin against Okolie
  • Listening to Steve Bunce on Five Live talk about the scoring on this was fascinating, he was saying that as they were doing the coverage for BT Sport, Richie Woodall, David Haye and himself all decided to score the fight ‘silently’ so not to influence any of the others in their view, the outcome was incredible.

Woodhall – by two rounds to Canelo

Haye – by two rounds to GGG

    Bunce – Drawn fight!

It really brought home to me, that because we all look for and appreciate different things from different fighters, we all possibly score and evaluate fights a little differently as well.

By far from a perfect system, but hard to know where to go with this one, as we also live in an imperfect world!

That's odd as straight after the fight, in the studio, Haye said he had it 2 rounds to Clenelo and Woodhall had it 2 rounds to GGG.
Sorry - had that the wrong way round, but like others have said the point remains valid.

I think that the whole Canelo drugs saga, also makes this one harder to swallow, as for someone who has so recently had illegal drugs in their system, doesn't sit very well with many people.

It will be even worse is Povetkin knocks over Joshua, as that will be two drugs cheats holding the premier weight titles - not a good look.

It would be an alright card for a normal sky sports event but PPV? Not a chance, only the Campbell one is a 50/50. Big Price will probably do ok but get sparked again and Okolie shouldn't have any problems with Askin really.

Agree. Wembley is a schlep for me, part of the reason I turned down a freebie. That undercard doesn't even deserve ppv

    It appears you heard wrong.
    How can I get tickets?
Tickets went on sale in July and are nearly sold out. "There will be 80,000 there on the night," promoter Eddie Hearn said with a week to go. "We had done 70,000 a month ago.

  • I went on the matchroom site which took me to stubhub, there were 40, 60, 120 and VIP tickets left.

I looked at the 40 and 60 tickets and there were plenty of empty blocks on the top tier.

If Matchroom redirected you to Stubhub, then presumably Matchroom have sold out what you were looking for ?

With 15,000 coach package tickets not selling. They've had interest to the tune of 3000 but most of those 15k will go unsold.

Don't rule out Hearn using a bit of good old fashioned kidology to try and ramp up sales, either.

I was going to go with my boy after the football Saturday but his mum said no, I was just looking at how much they were and what was left, I had 2 tickets in my basket ready if his mum said yes.

Got an email from stubhub this morning to say there were still items in my basket and offering 5% off if I was still interested.

We're going after, which was why I was wondering whether to go straight in or have a beer or two beforehand.

I think Matchroom use Stubhub as their primary ticket selling process, so what is available on there may quite closely reflect the numbers left available.

Hearn has been quite bullish about the level of sales - and talking about the coach packages as being one of the reasons for it not being full already - but it is interesting that it has obviously been a tougher sell than previous Joshua fights.
  • So what are we thinking for Saturdays fight, is there much value in Joshua to win on points 7/2?
  • So what are we thinking for Saturdays fight, is there much value in Joshua to win on points 7/2?

I wouldn't say so. Povetkin will be blowing out his arse by the end of Round 3 and then AJ will just be able to tee off.

I thought Povetkin was supposed to be tough?

In 2 minds whether to KO by round 3 or will go the distance
  • Cannot believe this is generating any hype whatsoever. Until Joshua faces Wilder or a fit Fury, post Klitschko all these opponents are just overhyped rip offs. Of course at this weight everyone has a puncher's chance but other than that it's inevitable what will happen and Joshua will beat the drugs cheat with consummate ease.

Another match room borefest and piss poor undercard for ppv where the home fighters will go through the motions and get the decisions whilst sky tell us how amazing they are.

Boxing is in danger of going back into the wilderness after the mainstream success and rejuvenation it's enjoyed the past few years if they keep mugging off punters by over hyping contests like this. Until the economics are sorted out and fighters stop swerving each other to keep a pristine 0 losses it won't change zzzzzz.

Read a book "Journeymen" recently which depressingly confirms the assumption of corruption and home fighter bias and it's all so predictable.

A likely drug cheat beating Golovkin Saturday after previously thieving a draw last year and now this. Fine to admit it for what it is but the hype and dressing up of such banal contests further diminish the scant residual integrity of the sport.

7/2 is shocking odds, AJ will be aiming to make a statement after going 10 with Takam and the distance with Parker.
Povetkin will be there for the taking after a couple of rounds imo

Povetkin has a granite chin (like most eastern Europeans boxers).

I know he can knock anyone out but Price would have finished him given another 30 seconds in the round

  • Povetkin is as hard as they come.
I expect AJ to win but definitely not in the first 3 rounds.
Round 9 to 12 for an AJ stoppage.

Fair enough. It's the Daily Telegraph article, personally I've no idea.
  • I've got journeyman downloaded and ready to read on my holiday next week

I bet it won't tell me anything I don't already know about the bullshit in boxing though, I am looking forward to reading it that said

In recent memory I can think of 4 occasions boxing politics has interfered and ruined legitimate opportunities

    Burns v Beltran
Connor Benn v the guy who blatantly beat him (I can picture the bloke but I can't remember his name)
    Groves v Froch
    Alvarez v Golovkin (first fight)

all because the winners were the promoters poster boys, it's fucking disgusting and those occasions were the televised bouts, it happens a revolting amount in local level fights. ticket seller needs to be knocked out to lose, even if they drop every round the fight will be a draw at worst

Povetkin is a world level heavyweight in an era where the credentials aren't what they should be to be a world level heavyweight. He was gassing against Price, he lasted against little Klit because he was possibly taking performance enhancing drugs, in fact I am certain that's why he lasted

When Dillian Whyte is talked up as a world title challenger that should tell all of us all we need to know about the credentials of the heavyweight division
So using your logic AJ is a champion in a shit era.
I stand by my comment this fight will not end early
  • See now carts I think povetkin provides a much more difficult opposition than many realise

The size difference is substantial but povetkin will fight on the chest and come forward , he holds proper ko power and if anything I don’t think he has been in with a harder one punch fighter

I expect an AJ victory but I also expect it to be another fight where AJ learns a lot about himself in the ring
  • I don’t think that we can truly judge this era, until some of the main protagonists have gone head to head a few times.

The prospect of Joshua/Wilder/Fury having a succession of ‘Super Fights’ is an exciting and intriguing one, as all of them have something to prove, and all have obvious flaws that have had people talking before. Once they have all fought each other, and once we have seen the quality of those fights, we will be in a better position to judge all of their places in boxing history.

We have now reached a time, when for the credibility of the sport (and indeed the individuals involved) these fights need to happen now – and I for one can’t wait to see them!

Obviously beneath those three, you then have the ‘Tier Two’ Heavyweights such as Whyte, Parker, Ortiz, Povetkin and possibly Dubois given a bit of time – though I don’t see any of that lot making the step up anytime soon.
