I just wish we would push harder for a 2nd goal when we go 1 up. I am sure our defence could hold out then. Thought Buyens was poor today he gave the ball away far too often for my liking. Having said that I am more than happy with our start to the season.
This. After we scored early, and Igor was being given sooooo much space, I thought if we got a second goal, they could well fall apart and we'd finally experience a "comfortable home win 4-0" :-)
Sadly we never kicked on.... in fact, we did the polar opposite. A bit disappointing and deflating after Tuesday but in the end just glad to take a point and extend the unbeaten run to mid-October - surely we'd have all taken that in early August.
Would we have taken the start we have had if it was offered at the start of the season? Of course we would. Especially this amongst us who were panicking after a poor pre season. Is it perfection? No, of course not. Is it positve, encouraging and interesting? Absolutely. Today was frustrating as we played them off he park for fifteen minutes, scoring in the process and were looking at our fluent best. But that changed the game. Clarke had lined his team up to allow us possession in our own half and press in their third. This is at odds with what a lot of teams do to us when they press Buyens and our CBs. Having scored that is exactly what he did. We surrendered possession and in Davies and Cotterill they have two tidy and bright footballers who dictated play. However, we still had chances, as did they, so a draw is a fair result.
This is the Championship. The most difficult league in England and maybe across Europe. Look at how many draws are occurring. Teams are setting out not to lose. It can be annoying to watch but it is BP's way and has worked thus far. He certainly didn't look happy with our show today but let's be positive and keep looking forwards.
Walked away disappointed. First 10 minutes I thought we'd win by 2 or 3,but we scored then reverted to previous games letting the opposition have the possession. Brum should have scored 2 or more before they finally did.
When they did equalise we came into it but like last week I can't remember the opposition keeper making a save. We lacked urgency to take the game to them. Igor created a few chances again but we need someone up with him to free up space he also looked like he was carrying a knock in the 2nd half. Morro came in and did very well especially as he hasn't played in 2 months.
We have the basis of a good team we don't concede many and with Igor up top we have a threat still unbeaten and I believe we can still improve. Get someone up top with Igor and we'll challenge throughout the season
Shit game fair result , would like us to be more adventurous at home , we seem to give the opposition so much of the ball which is frustrating especially when we go a goal in front , on the + side we are still unbeaten and we can get better .
That was desperately poor football - yet again. We started brightly enough, but after 15 minutes of forward passing we had exhausted our invention and retreated to endless sideways balls on the half-way line followed by a pass back to defence. If we were away and playing a top team, this sort of negative strategy might be excusable - but in front of 15,000 at The Valley against a team 18th in the league, it's just not good enough.
We have the same old problems that dogged us in the last two seasons: no-one in midfield to get hold of the ball and advance. Strikers unable to move off the ball and make space. Weak tackles and ragged passing. And slowness of mind and body that verges on catalepsy.
What, exactly, is the point of Bulot? In the first-half he was totally anonymous, and in the second he was notable for two things: a corner that was despatched straight to the keeper, and a free-kick from just outside Brum's box that flew over everyone and straight out of play. Have we found another Danny Green?
"Feeble" was my neighbour's summation of today's performance. We ought to do far, far better than this.
We should of course not be greedy. Unbeaten and with a markedly better set up and players than in recent times I believe we are being spoilt at the moment. Wish list? a loan of a good strike partner for Igor. I am sure this is being addressed by KM and RD but only on their terms. Certain things never change at the Valley though, we never tend to capitalise on a previous great result and are invariably disappointing to say the least next time out. I rely of course on the reports of my fellow lifers, as I don't attend regularly enough anymore but we got today what I expected.
Point gained. If someone had given you four points from the last 2 games then anyone with a footballing brain would have snatched your hand off.
However to go one up early we sat off and let Birmingham dictat the game from 15 minutes onwards. When you get a chance in a tight game you need to take it and sadly Wilson should have put us 2 up 30 seconds into the second half.
Morrison looked nervous on his return but had a steady game. Bikey looked a little lost without his friend from Israel. Solly, Henderson and Wiggins all solid.
Jackson was having a decent game before getting dragged off. Buyens whilst always looking for the ball gave it away 4/5 times in his own half and we nearly had a repeat of the Rotherham goal in the first half.
Not losing seems more important, than taking a few risks and going for the win. Did not want to be right with my 1-1 score on preview, but was not sure that we can boss a game for any substained period. Felt Johann would be a big loss, and so it proved. His class on the ball and quick incisive passes from one side to the other was sorely missed.
The first 10 mins i thought we were stroking the ball around and bulot good cross led to igor's goal. Then......... everyone takes a backward step and Birmingham take the initative. The rest of the half we could not make a tackle in midfield. It's feel churlish to be dissapointed after a 11 match unbeaten run, but i hope it dos not become a millstone around our neck and we become inhibited,
Nearly every result is an improvement on last season, sub Wolves for yeovil, Brentford for Barnsley, rotherham for donny. ETC
Has the Bar been raised that high,we are unhappy with 6th and being unbeaten. ?
For those of you who don't like to hear we have been lucky, what i will say is we are having the rub of the green.
Having the weight of being favourites certainly affected us. Several days off for most of squad, and then on to the south west coast with no Yann to worry about .
First 11 minutes class, lets have a go at them and take tuesdays win at Norwich into this game great, go 1 up the rest pure drivel...i watched Peeters today and he spent most of the time telling his team to go backwards...its finally dawned on me that this is (though competitive) an average championship no real outstanding quality sides in it, that said if we were more positive we would be way out front, what happens when we start going a goal down.
Nice 2 week break before bournemouth and see the Yann got sent off today i am sure he didnt want to play against us....
Doing a Seth again so a few thoughts from E Stand, Block E.
A typical banana skin scenario today which I feared it would be. A team seemingly there for the taking and at first, it seemed as though we would do just that. Great to see Igor score again & hoped we would build on his goal...but this IS Charlton.
Whether we relaxed, became blasé or merely sat back- one of the above or maybe all three. We were an accident waiting to happen & in due course, it did.
2nd half, apart from a couple of chances we should have put away ( and if they'd come good, I'd be telling a different story ) we lacked energy, movement & passion. Had this been stronger opposition, I fear we would have lost the match. As it was, a draw was possibly a fair result....and how many times have we said that this season ?
It's beginning to sound as though I have a permanent downer on Yoni but once again, and for the 4th game in a row in my opinion, he was very poor. With time on the ball, he played it straight to an opponent, wasting possession and negating what could have been a positive attack. And this happened enough times today for others around me to form the same opinion. He was an exciting addition to our squad initially but now I fear he is going backwards as opposed to becoming more comfortable at Championship level.
I also feel it was clear today how light is our squad with injuries to JBG and now young Jordan not forgetting Chris Solly's ongoing problem. A young bench is not a problem , but a young bench with so few first team appearances between them is a tad worrying.
Hopefully, the international break may be a godsend this time as I feel we need to regroup & perhaps this is the time for RD & BB to consider bringing in at least one loan player ? Of course, we remain unbeaten which is a tremendous achievement but the lack of atmosphere at The Valley today was a clear indication of the way the paying public viewed this match. For me, it was our worst performance of the season thus far.
My next game is in 4 weeks' time due to a week away in which 3 games will be played. Very poor forward planning on my part but I fervently hope that BB's is spot on and that I'll return to a massive game that will be well worth the wait. Our lads will need to be strong against their historically bullying tactics & ready to work for each other whilst we must hope that no further injuries are sustained by players serving their country. And of course, we must hope that Jordan's injury is not as serious as it looked.
I did miss the 1st min of 2nd half, along with quite a few others who were still drinking up.
Should lawrie have scored ?
He didn't have a lot of time but had a clear view at goal. Looked like he side-footed it and just got under the ball a little too much but he hit it with plenty of power.

Guess it's the same as asking if Donaldson should have scored for Brum when clean through.? Of course, he should have, especially as he's a striker. Wilson would probably bury those for fun in training but, of course, he's no striker.
Thought Donaldson (and the Jasper Carrott lookalike wide man) were very good for them and Donaldson did us a favour touching in that first half 'goal'. Igor was good throughout and more route one over the top may actually bear fruit as he was on the shoulder of the centre half throughout the first half. Our goal was first rate and there should have been more but we switched off. Perhaps we left a lot back at Norwich. The second half was forgettable. We looked tired and lacking ideas... None of the last 15 blitz we saw last weekend.

think you are being too kind. my answer to that question is yes he should.

With his wrong foot, if there is such a thing for a professional footballer. Having said that what was that attempted cross by Cousins from the byline in the 2nd half with his left foot all about?
poor today 5 in midfield of which 3 where shit and Jackson wasnt one of those. Wilson never got into the game.Bulot is crap, and Buyens was awful, did he know we were in Red ? Defence was ok. We didnt deserve to win. What was the brum guy thinking touchimg the ball in on the line--knob head---love him tho.
Wilson is a complete waste of a position plays right mid but is never on the touch line always inside, spends too much time fiddling with his basterd hair cut, can't head a ball or manage to control it and when he gets a free chance to cross he gives it to the keeper, needs to get out the team n fast
Much of what gets written on this board is opinion, some agreeable, some not but this from smiffyboy is plain factually incorrect. You know which player Wilson is? The 2 with the hair yes, who stays wide right and makes himself available and contributes to all our attacking play on the right?

I really cannot see how anyone can defend Lawrie Wilson after another truly awful display,
His first touch is awful, he hides at every opportunity, never shows out wide, runs into positions where he can never realistically receive the ball, struggled to pass a ball 5 yards in the second half. Lovely guy maybe, but for the love of god he should be nowhere near a mid table championship side. We looked 10000000% better with Bulot out there. Tucudean is running him close for awfulness but not quite at lozza's level just yet
Again, just not correct. I am privileged perhaps to sit in the covered end in line with the right touchline but thankfully from there I get to appreciate the effort Wilson puts in. He is often responsible for getting us into forward positions and opening up the opposition in the final third, as he did today. A bad miss second half yes but no justification for writing him off.

you mean the one who has some limitations, but always gives his all, wholehearted in everything he does, is direct, gets some things wrong but occasionally does some really good things, never complains and clearly loves playing for us? the sort of player any championship side would want in their squad? yeah, he is right rubbish he is.
I am getting frustrated at how we sit back as soon as we score, we should be finishing teams off. To those who say it's better than last season, which is true, it's now a virtually different team, so should it not be better? We have spent a lot of money (for us) on players, but none seem to have the Killer instinct (pun intended). Our midfield is poor. Buyens, after a good start to the season, now gives away the ball far more than he should, why did he stay on when Jackson was substituted? Why is Cousins being played out wide? Even Bikey had a poor game today. How we started against Wigan and Derby, I really thought we were going to play good, attacking football this year, not score then sit back and do nothing. Disappointed, and going by comments from those around me, am not the only one.
he HIDES ALL THE FRICKING TIME, take your blinker off boys. Classic example was when we had a succession of throw ins down the right in the first half, he was hiding between the defenders and pointing to pass it into the middle to no-one.
His miss was one of the best things he did today. He doesn't ever want the ball, continually pointing to people to pass it to the other side of the pitch, runs down cul de sacs, every time Solly got the ball today you would have thought he would have pulled out to the right wing.....no way....ran inside and got as close to a defender as possible, Solly had to keep turning around and knocking it back.
I would be seriously interested in seeing his stats for touches of the ball, I would be almost certain he would be one of the lowest. Giving your all means fuck all - see Simon Church and the grief he gets. Direct? When did he take on his man today? Not once is the answer. Never complains? Have you seen the amount of moaning he does at everyone else whilst he fixes his hair however many times a game? Where did their goal come from today? Oh yeah Mr Wilson's side....what did he do once it went in? Started complaining at everyone else negating the fact that he'd let his man go. Loves playing for us? So would I, it means nothing. There is a reason his whole career has been spent in league one, he is not the sort of player any championship side would want in there side, he is not good enough.
Number one is to hope and pray that Jordan Cousins' injury is not as serious as it looked. Very worrying that he did not appear to move after falling awkwardly.
I said in the preview thread that I feared "after the Lord Mayor's show" following the Norwich game and therefore would be happy with a draw.
Well I'm happy we didn't lose but unhappy too because we really should and could have got all three points. It's a shame almost the first kick of the second half fell to Lawrie Wilson's left rather than right foot and thus curled over rather than under the bar. Had we gone 2-0 up then I'm confident that we would have closed out the victory.
The first goal was a well worked move clinically finished by Igor. We then, why oh why do we do it, sat back. We had what looked to me a lucky disallowed goal for offside against us late in the first half yet still the penny did not drop! Given that their player was on the byeline when he crossed how was their "scorer" offside? I'll take it though.
I thought most players put a decent shift in although Yoni glaringly gave it away in dangerous positions on two or three occasions. He has not looked the assured player of the first few matches in the last two home games.
Mention of Yoni leads me to the substitutions and I think Big Bob got them wrong today. In my view a below par Yoni rather than Jacko should have gone off for Moussa and I also think Tucudean for Wilson was a mistake. The Birmingham defence struggled with our pace and width and we lost a big part of that when Lawrie went off. George had little or no impact which is not great for a sub. Fox for Cousins was obviously enforced and, so late, I can understand a defensive sub to hang on to what we had although I may have been tempted to gamble on Ahearne-Grant or Harriott conjuring up something against tiring defenders.
Still unbeaten though so just expressing alternative views rather than being downright critical.
Buyens was a liability (yet again), and should have been subbed at half-time. Shocking to keep him on and sub Jacko.
We seem to have no confidence going forward, everything we do is so laboured it's painful.
No-one looked like they wanted to be there. Vetokele reminded me of JFH. Yes he scored a good head, then could not be arsed. SO LAZY. Once Jacko went off, no leadership, no players talking to each other, nothing from the manager.
Cousins was playing so well, then yet again he puts him on the left. Glad he's ok (above).
Quite expecting a Birmingham win from 20 mins onwards, and they would have deserved it. We were abject.
First time I've seen anyone call Vetokele lazy. Disappointing if true.
Not true in any way
Absolutely not true in my opinion.
In the first half he lost the ball on the left and Wiggins was two on one. He sprinted back in support of Wiggins and eventually ended up clearing the ball from the byeline.
It would be true to say he was isolated and thus not involved at times but that is not "lazy" in my book anyway.

Last season as posted above Brum (h) was a 0-2 shocker
Last season we lost away to Bournemouth...
All to play for
