  • I know we all see games differently. Looking at the marks for each player, I can't believe some of the low scores for Jackson and Wiggins. Jackson helped to hold us together. Besides losing possession once, the midfield certainly looked dodgier once he was subbed. As for Wiggins, he was probably the only harsh booking and had to be careful against a tricky winger whom I thought he handled well.

I was also shocked at the variation of marks for Jackson. I gave him a 4 as I thought he was over-run most of the game. I personally would've subbed him at HT, captain or not. I'm not one of the anti JJ brigade, as I still think he has alot to offer this season, but certainly didn't show it today in my opinion................

Thought Jackson was totally out of his depth in the role he played today.
Buyens was so exposed - all too often on his own in the centre circle with zero 1-2 or give and go options. Fortunately Buyens is quality, calm on the ball, head up player with a good weight on his pass - a real playmaker.
Problem is when you take Jackson off you often realise that he did more than you thought. Game didn't suit him today as it exposed his lack of pace and didn't allow him to get forward and mix it.
For me, I would have taken Jacko off, brought Cousins in the middle alongside Buyens and put Harriot wide left to run at the full back and just to force Watford to sit a bit deeper in fear of his pace and his joint pace with Vetokele.
In saying that, I am so proud of the lads today - a real TEAM performance.
Charlton will need to avoid bombardments too often as it will tire the players, ball chasing is so much harder than being in possession.

  • Also I forgot to mention in my OP, great support from Watford today and real class from the fans applauding in the tenth minute.
  • Agreed and I hope the steward who got over zealous with one of the Watford fans learns to keep a lid on it in the future or the club could be penalised

We lost the middile after about 30 mins in imo. Thought wiggins had a torid afternoon but stuck with it and Solly got better as the game wore on. Lost something from the team when Gudmunson went off as he is a quality player.
Lucky to get the win but hey ho I'll take the 3 points thankyou and we still look like a work in progress, need to bring in a midfielder and a striker.

Wiggins was back to his best - really cant remember a better left back we have ever had
You must be quite young mate.
    I wish
Then you're really old and your memory's not what it was ;-)

Wiggins is quality - as was Phil Warman, and Chrissy
  • Not read through, but here's my view. ..

Knocked it about ok first half. Got our goal, which was a stone wall pen. Always feel confident with Bouyans as well. He is a real class act. I thought Watford were quality in terms of footballing ability, but as they have showed in previous years, they are a niggly horrible team. They will be up there this year, that's for sure. The ref had a mare second half, and for some reason was trying to even it up. How he booked Wiggins was a mystery.

We really road our luck today and on another day might of come unstuck. Our defending was second to none and Bikey was absolutely incredible! Wiggins, I have thought is a worry. He got skinned numerous times by that Anya who is a good player, but he is a shadow of his former self. He actually looks like the week link now. I thought he was the best left back in the league a few years ago.

We soaked up the pressure well. We hit them on the counter and i think, with training and a little more composure we will punish teams in the future.

I feel confident for the first time in years that we can challenge. We are a different prospect all together this year, and I for one am loving it.

One other thing is that if we don't get another striker either on loan or in Jan we will struggle up front. Long may Vetokele stay fit.

Happy Charlton fan and roll on Tuesday!!

Big Bob excitable at the end and nutting TBH after the final whistle. Love it.

Missed that, StevieG but Big Bob definitely seems to wear his heart on his sleeve & I love him for it !

Definitely fast becoming "one of us ".

Hmm. Standard lost again today (3-5 at home, now 11th of 16 in the Pro League; also out of Champions League and demoted to Europa League, of course). Luzon's status as head coach must have taken another hit.

...They wouldn't, would they? I don't believe in the more contrived "network" theories, but that would be real proof that the network comes first.
  • Thought we started well and was keeping possession up until JBG went off and then it turned into a similar game like Brighton where we struggled to keep the ball.

At the back I thought everyone performed really well. Igor and Buyens also did well. Not to sure what Tucadean gives us and Moussa and Harriot's decision making was poor. We are lacking a central midfielder and a striker who can hold it up, but unbeaten in 6, 3/3 at home is a brilliant start more than I could have hoped for.

What a great day for us Addicks
Brilliant result , the second game I've been to this season , Brighton the first, and thought once again we weren't all that (obviously a lot better than last year) conceding far too much possession but this time we got away with it.
Henderson was brilliant and brave and sneaked my MOM just above the beeeeast
Small welled up during the David Whyte Whyte Whyte respect
My son was one of 9 Charlton mascots today he went out with Vetokele and thoroughly enjoyed it , I got smashed in the head with a ball smacking my phone on to me as I filmed my boy and didn't concentrate on the next kid and small got injured ha ha when the kids were having a kick about on the pitch, very funny but hurt , will try and do a YouTube link if I can work out how to get it off phone on to there

    Like the sticker album

Shook BBB's hand and seeing the pitch close up , it really is like a carpet .

Scum lost so life is good

  • Very lucky to get away with that. Not one shot on target from open play at home, not good enough. Good possession and football in the first half with no end product. Second half just sat back and rode our luck, as well as some great goalkeeping and brave defending. The one attacking option seemed to be the long cross swung in from the right which was easily dealt with on every occasion bar one, when Igor didn't quite time his jump. Another day that's a 4-1 defeat. Still, if you can win games when you are not playing well...
  • Cant help but think that Kermy would be a fantastic signing for us.
Never know! Stranger things have happened.

That was then this is now. Loved Yann but he wanted out and I personally wouldn't want to see him back. Move on.

Did he not want out because Bmouth were prepared to offer a contract that was longer than we were prepared to offer? If so, then thats only what you or I would do.
Here we go again... It's what you would do - please don't presume to speak for other people.
  • Pleased with all three points of course, but we were lucky to get away with them. We worked hard but gave the ball away far too much in the second half, and could have been punished. Another nail biting end to the game, but this is Charlton, so we expect that! Thought Henderson made some great saves to keep us ahead, and we mostly defended very well. We so need another goalscorer though. Moussa had two good chances late on that Igor would have buried (we hope) but he can't do it all, needs a strike partner. As one of the few home fans on the train to London Bridge, I must give the Watford fans credit for how well they took their defeat, and also for joining in the tribute to David Whyte, well done them.

We 100% had a shot on target from open play. Callum harriotts shot springs to mind. I can't see this team getting beat 4-1 any time soon.

Not according to this, and I can't remember seeing one?

Even if we did, one shot on target from open play at home, still not good enough.

I hope you are right about the 4-1.

Callum Harriott definitely had a shot on target, it was spongefoot-esque but it did force a save out of Gomes.

I agree that it's not good enough but it seems our tactics are to counter attack. After going 1-0 up early, if big bob is confident we can hold onto the lead by soaking up pressure and counter attacking, then that's good enough for me. It's worked quite well so far. Apart from Brighton?

    Me too mate
  • Reading through this, I think there's too much concern about the possession Watford had. A bit more composure and we could easily have got a breakaway goal in the second half...we have good attacking pace now and are well set for fast counter-attacks. That attack where Wilson flicked the ball over their defender, ran forward and put in a great cross was quality, just a shame there was no Igor to nod it in after getting poleaxed off the ball.

Yann feigned injury and refused to play for us at Huddersfield ? I believe. Wouldn't have him back if he crawled here.

  • Henderson and Bikey were immense. Second half we gave the ball away too easily. I thought Moussa was poor, but 3 points is 3 points.
  • Great win lads. When the fixtures came out, I thought we would be in the bottom 3 after 6 games.
Happy to eat my words and congratulate the lads for staying unbeaten.

You would have done the same.

    (Joking)
  • We did look fortunate yesterday but as I always say... If you can only attack and not defend in Football then your gonna have to try and score a lot of goals to win.

In terms of our tactics though I do wonder if it was a bit of Peeters playing it safe (Nothing wrong with that), after all on Thursday he came out and said he wasnt sure how Watford would play under Garcia (3.5.2 or 4.3.3) so could be the reason for us being more defensive.

Combine that with the two silly goals we conceded v Brighton and yesterday could also have been an attempt (that worked) from Peeters to tighten up the back

    .
  • Absorbing game and agree that 3 points were a big bonus. Last year's team would've folded against that Watford team. The style of play is so much better to watch and the team look as though they understand the game plan. We defended so well in the second half and it was good to see Bikey and Ben Haim putting their foot through it when it was needed. So pleased for Henderson too. To give a good performance at home in a big game should do wonders for his confidence.

PS: In the interest of balance, those annoyed with Watford's physical approach may have forgotten Buyens' cynical foul for his booking. Looked like he led with his arm and could easily have got a red.

Also I forgot to mention in my OP, great support from Watford today and real class from the fans applauding in the tenth minute.

Cheers for that - despite the banter that goes on all football fans can unite at moments like that.

Sometimes we all have those games where we can to get "lucky" (we had that at Rotherham earlier this season)

Our fault anyway for putting ourselves on the back foot early on chasing the game - 2nd half we upped our game with a bit more pace after a slow opening 45 minutes.

You've probably got the most experience centre half paring in the league and it showed.

I think that Gudmondsson really helps with the quick passing game and his contribution is a little underestimated. Will score a spectacular goal and when he has done that, will definitely knock in a few.

And you probably have one of the most talented front six set ups in the league.
What some fans forget is that we won't be playing Watford, Derby, Wigan and Brighton every week. All teams who have been in the play-offs in the last couple of seasons.
That's only the second time we've had less than ten attempts on goal - hopefully normal service resumes on Tuesday?
  • A defensive effort to be proud of, judging by comments. I honestly hate smash and grab where we get an early goal then get pummelled for 90 minutes but 3 points against one of the toughest opponents we'll see at the Valley this season is a great result. It'll be tough when we have to cross the river later this season but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, the squad will be a lot more gelled by then.

Does anyone know why it was 10 minutes of added time?
