AA for Cousins on Saturday, Reza for Pritchard on Tuesday, Church replacing rather than joining Sordell ...would the same subs made by Powell have been branded negative?
In a way I think CP's love of the club, led him to a position where he placed far too much emphasis on trying not to lose games, rather than winning them in a convincing way, which would have built confidence amongst the players. In always trying to defend a slender lead, rather than push on for 2 or 3 goals, it sent out a message to players that they weren't really good enough to be ahead, but now that they were, defend for their lives in trying to preserve it. Very few if any players have been on the top of their form this season, except perhaps Stephens and Poyet, most of the others have underperformed. Most seem to be lacking confidence and are way below par, Pritchard being the most stark example. A couple of goals and wins and I think we'll see a far better team.

Not to mention Cousins for Harriott on Tuesday. I think you have a fair point.
I think it’s worth looking a little closer at the distinctly patchy career of Riga before some people get too carried away.
Firstly regarding his ‘contract’ situation at AC Milan – or more accurately AC Milan Primavera AC Milan’s under 19 team. According to Google translations of the 2 links below (from a Belgium newspaper and the AC Milan website), in October 2013 Riga “reached a collaboration agreement until 30 June 2014” with the club to work “under the wing of Aldo Dolcetti” (the under 19 coach) – so may not actually have had a contract?
Secondly, the Belgium article does suggest a lack of staying power. Before Milan he “had nine months to work on the Aspire Youth Academy in Qatar…Eventually he went back for personal reasons earlier than anticipated”. And at Standard Liege “after a year he already left, despite an ongoing one year contract”.
Of course this may not matter much if he’s only here as a stop gap until the end of the season – hopefully to keep us up. However, as I’ve posted before his overall ‘success ratio’ as a manager is actually not as good as Powell’s:
If Paul Hart is sacked after the success he has achieved bringing many players through that would be scandalous.
This is an army like regime and the head of every post needs to be by someone who will agree/say yes to what RD proposes. The academy is his main outset and he wants all the players coming out of it to be playing a certain brand of football. To have a head coach during a relegation scrap who has not signed a contract and is using the former managers assistants to pick his team for him etc., is quite simply ridiculous. If Powell is to blame over our poor season (it's quite clearly the shite on the pitch), then why are his right hand men still there? It's obvious, he wanted Powell out, regardless, so RD has choice of who is head coach, why.. so they do not disagree with his questionable choices, they just do their job even with players leaving left right and centre.
Think it's worth saying that the wheels could really have come off this week. A very popular Manager gets fired, an unknown newbie arrives with no particular reputation. Plus, he's a bit different and, obviously, associated with a new regime which is bringing change and uncertainty. He's likely to be treated with suspicion. However, the wheels have not come off and, relative to what might have happened, that's a big positive.
It's impossible to say how much credit Riga should get for that, but the players still appear very committed and, to be fair to the new Manager, insofar as he's listened to Dyer and Matthew and allowed them to have influence then that was his decision. Others may have behaved differently.
What Chris Powell may or may not have done is irrelevant, for better or worse. The positive now, potentially, is that the immediate, short-term risk of traumatic change appears to have been avoided. Insofar as doing some things a little differently (even if those things are no better) whilst giving different players a chance (Sordell, Pritchard) may just lift sagging morale and confidence we might now begin to see some benefits of what was clearly a risky change.
As others have said, the apparent tension behind the scenes should now lift, especially given this solid if unspectacular start, and that has to be a good thing.
But Mick he's only in charge until the end of the season before he moves into his Academy role.
The big plus is that the players have bought into him as shown by the effort and commitment Wednesday and yesterday.
As I said I also suspect he is only here until the end of the season. However, I think Duchatelet should think twice before appointing him to replace Hart at the academy.
Based on the links I posted, he only managed 7 months of a planned 9 month stay at the Aspire Youth Academy in Qatar, and he has just joined us after 5 months of planned 9 months “collaboration” to be at AC Milan Primavera “until 30 June 2014”.
Perhaps even more interesting it seems he was the manager of Standard Liege when Duchatelet took over in June 2011 but walked out in May 2012 “despite an ongoing one year contract”. Since when he’s only had the 2 short term positions in Qatar and Milan.
As to whether the “players have bought into him” I think that still remains to be seen.
From the post match press conference it seems that Dyer picked the team against Huddersfield (I haven’t heard anything about Millwall). So, as yet, we don’t know the ongoing degree of input from Dyer and Mathew, plus, as I posted, Riga’s overall ‘success ratio” as a manager is not impressive - in fact on a par with Dowie and Parkinson:
By the way Seth do you ever leave your PC - you've been oh so prolific since you know who got the tin tack.
Not a lot, the wife hogs the telly. Mind you I went to the Globe Theatre on Thursday and saw Merchant of Venice since you're kind enough to ask. Wednesday afternoon a lecture on Ancient Greek Theatre, the evening at the Valley. Last Monday I was working, oh and Friday I had to schlepp to Heathrow and back. The rest of the time I have to use to maintain all my multiple identities on Charlton Life.
At the Globe? With the jacuzzi? Your brother and the whole cast were very good. Is your bro an Addick or Knott?
Saw Merchant on Wednesday.
My brother was playing the judge among other roles.

Bit of a lapsed Addick these days, but he knows where his loyalties lie.
Thought Shylock was excellent. He's Macedonian and came over specificallyto play the role. Was remanded in immigration for four days before being finally released which no doubt proved useful in preparing himself for his persecuted role.

Nice chap.
This ought to be on the Theatre thread. Agree about Shylock, amazed he was held for four days! He is part of a pan European actor exchange initiative (get the irony in there with regard to Charlton) and he was very good, especially with a tough and demanding audience.
Please pass on my best wishes to your Bro, and tell him he can even dance...a bit ;-)
As I said on another thread, with a game now every 3.5 days, it's likely that training will be fairly light, so JR tactics and style will take a little bit longer to come through.
Style of football at this stage in the season means nothing, the guys not tied down to a contract and nor are 90% of our players, if we already had our future squad and long term manager in place then style would matter. Points are what we need, stability and then move forward from there. This style of attacking football could see us come unstuck when we come up against a team that do the exact same but with more quality uptop, Hudds and Millwall were us but poorer. But if we magically find a way to get scoring goals we could see the opposite and beat a team convincingly, but not sure these players are good enough at the level tbh.
Style of football means everything when we play Yeovil & Barnsley at home. They will come for a point and counter attack, so we have to show something different to the style CP had us playing at home against teams that get men behind the ball. (Birmingham for example)
We have been useless this season at trying to break teams down.

I can understand that the physical training side of things will be light. But they're not going to all foxtrot oscar altogether are they? Surely there'll be more time to discuss tactics.

Well yesterday's tactics will be different to Tuesdays tactics, so he'll have a day and a half to get them prepared for that. It'll be the first game where he's been in charge where we have to go out, as the home side, and take the game to the opposition. Not much time.

Didn't know you knew Yeovil and Barnsleys game plan, pass this onto JR and we're sorted!!! Yeovil won't come for the draw they will come for the win and give us a good go, we have been useless at breaking teams down. Barnsley may well play for the draw but the longer we are sitting on these 0-0s the longer we are asking for a disaster I'd say. FWIW I am a fan of passing football and I'd rather JR in charge than CP, but we have to give it time and this late in the season, that time is at a little.
Don't know about your lot,but the children in the audience on Wednesday were fantastic, totally engaged in the performance; Heartwarming in these times of Crush Candy bull-shit.

Plus he will have limited knowledge of the opposition and will rely on the existing coaches and chief scout to give him the information on Eddie Howe's system, pattern of play, set plays, individual strengths and weaknesses, etc. He will not be able to come up with a game plan without input from Dyer, Mathew & Chapple. Also, most managers have their own trusted scout who he probably despatched to Bournemouth v Middlesbrough on Saturday to make a team assessment.
I hope the scouting report included, "Isolate and attack the right back Francis in one-against-one situations. He lacks pace and is slow on the turn". This didn't happen in the opening game of the season and Francis often had Harriott running the other way as he made supporting runs along the right flank. A characteristic of Eddie Howe's teams, is that he pushes both full backs forward to overload the opposition full backs 2 v 1. That sort of information.
After 2 games, I think we're on the right path to better football. Results ultimately matter, but, better performances should bring better results. At the moment, I'm happy. The players seem to have responded. A win soon would be a huge lift.

Apparently Paul Hart joining Man City as Academy Director in summer. Jose Riga to become Charlton Academy Director. New manager to be Curbs. Rumours rumours

Was AA injured or was it tactical?
