  • If he gets e-mails telling him which players to pick, presumably he will obey or face the sack like our Chrissy?
  • I think the players will be said to see Chris go but they may enjoy a fresh approach to training.

I am not saying Powell shoudl have gone i am still not happy about it but can imagine it will freshen the methods up etc.
  • Anyone got a link to the full interview? That one cut off just when he was asked about CP...seems RD even has the editing at Radio London under his control...

Thought they both looked very dapper and seemed to have a bit of authority round him aswell as the fact we played well and made early subs but don't know why I say this most will just slag him off anyway.

Go on Yann - try to surprise me with an unexpected comment one day.

  • Will take a few games to make a full impression (good or bad) but we set up as well as could be hoped, didnt concede and played some passing football. Certainly not the end of the world. Any hostility should really be directed at RD if you think it's necessary; this guy has come in with a job to do and is most likely trying his hardest to do it. He's not gonna want to lose is he?
  • This is an interesting read: http://www.cogitraining.com/en/about_us/staff#Jose_Riga
Also explains the cogitraining approach and use of senseball (if anyone is interested...).

Hope when we go down we get a League 1 specialist at the helm. Someone with a bit of experience, yet young enough to be a rising star.

someone like Chris Powell you mean? :)

Please stop saying new Charlton boss Jose Riga was "technical director" of AC Milan. Spent 5 months there as consultant to academy.

  • Pocchetino (sp?) has been used as an example of a relatively unknown foreign manager taking over in controversial circumstances, but if we're taking examples from Southampton, then this guy seems more of a Mark Wotte, who managed them as they dropped out of the championship with us in 2009.

If you take the name of AC Milan away from Riga's CV, his career seems to have had a fairly similar trajectory (wandering between coaching and technical / consultant type roles without really becoming established anywhere) as Wotte's.
  • Nice suit, nice tan, very skinny legs and reminded me of a younger Barry Manilow. Liked a bit of arm waving, very continental. Didn't have time to bring the Shaman along to play mind games with the opposition.

Not sure anyone had said that, apart from you. But 5 months shows he had something about him.

I didn't say it but plenty of others have which is why Gabriele Marcotti, the British based expert on Italian football commented on his twitter feed.
  • Half-mast tie and unbuttoned shirt collar, tsk tsk very slovenly
  • Bottom line is a lot of you here who think you are in on the koo (you aren't) are now totally redundant and your opinion (and information also) and had better get your collective arses in gear pretty sharpish or this club is in the long term shite.

    Just saying hashtag.

What should I do not support my club and new manager carry on being negative you mug. .
Genuine question. Is there anything that would make you question what was happening at the club or, dare I say, feel at all negative?
  • I'm not going to call it one way or another after just one game. We played a lot better than I expected last night, but had we not been missing the target we could have had a few in the net. Being realistic the lads have just lost a manager with whom I expect they had a great working relationship and have had less than 48 hours with the new guy. Saturday will be more telling, but given it's a game where pride and honour are at stake as well as the 3 points that may not be the fairest test for the new guy. The long term impression I think is whether we stay up or go down. All we can do is turn up watch the lads and sing for Charlton. Oh, and pray - divine intervention would be handy!

Come on give us further info.

  • Amazed that he has not signed a contract!

Yes of course but I think sacking a manager when were bottom of the league is a good thing for a start and like Iv said before I'm optimistic for the future , new pitch , updated training ground better match day experience. So far I'm struggling to see what he's done wrong apart from sell yann but even that I can half understand.

We had a less than encouraging draw against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.

  • I and many other people I spoke to was very encouraged.

    More encouraged than against QPR?
  • No obviously not but the football was better , but that's just one game ,we've only won six don't forget.
  • Charlton Athletic need to win a lot more games and escape relegation. That is the bottom line in this new landscape.
The bigger picture is the bigger picture, but some kind of respite from all that is to narrow down the focus and see Charlton Athletic win matches. Draws and defeats are not good enough.

3 draws from the games in hand would take us out of the bottom three.
Agreed. I have missed that, and would much rather have wins than draws but as long as the mathematics are favourable, however it is done I expect the changes to mean we avoid relegation one way or another.
I will fix it for me, defeats are not good enough, draws and wins are good enough if they keep Charlton Athletic up.

Draws and defeats were exactly what we were getting even before the change in management. Six wins in a whole season is not simply a bad run of form.

But we now have a change in management, things are supposed to get better in terms of points, and I hope they do. So far, so not that encouraging.
