PROTEST ON WEDNESDAY

Get behind the team - any negative protest will be very damaging to the team at an absolutely crucial time. The players deserve our support and should get it.

your right, players who are paid to do a job and currently failing deserve our support. bankers who helped lose millions deserve our support too i suppose.

  • Singing "Chrissy Powells Red Army", "Chrissy Powell, Chrissy Powell, Chrissy Powell" etc during the game should make the point without being abusive or offensive.

Agree with this. CP would not want the crowd to be distracted from supporting the players, I think they woudl be uplifted by a raucous noise supporting CP
  • The key will be if - and hopefully it won't happen but ... - we go a goal or two down. It could be one of the worst managerial baptisms of all time!
  • If you want to protest, and I admit I'm sitting on the fence here as I haven't really figured out what I make of it all yet, the only type of protest that will make any difference, especially as it'll be KM and RM at the ground not RD, would be to stay away from the ground completely. Don't buy a ticket, don't buy a pint, don't buy a programme or a pie or a jackpot ticket. Stay away and cut the clubs revenue. That'll get noticed. Singing CPs name by the Sam Bartram statue, while well meant, will be water off a duck's back if the duck even hears it. By turning up you'll effectively saying that your not happy with the decision but you'll put up with it, which is fine if it's how you feel but if it is why bother with a half hearted 'protest'.

Disagree. By not being there you would be, literally, unseen.

If people want to protest let them. Others don't want to which is also fine although it does make be laugh that some can't see that you can both protest against the owners AND support the players. They are not mutually exclusive.

Thing is Paulie or whoever you need to do it and not wait for someone else to do it for you

Sing Chris's name, get a banner made that will be photographed by the press looking for a protest (and see how long before the stewards remove it) but if you want it to happen don't talk about it on here expecting others to do it. They won't. It has to be you doing it.

Didn't a large group of Liege fans storm a board meeting or something? Can't get much more visible than that but as far as I'm aware RD hasn't changed his approach to managing that club.

Football fans biggest weapon when trying to get at a club owner is the pound in our pocket - keep enough of them in ours instead of his and he might start to listen. Shouting abuse through the window at KM isn't going to get CP his job back or convince RD that Hamer is a better keeper than Thuram.

By all means, let the club know why your not at the game but I believe empty stands would be a far more striking image than a mob in the west stand car park.

Personally I don't think I'd be doing either but as I live in another country it's a bit of a moot point.

My mind goes back to that fantastic day when we ended our triumphant League One campaign and the fans sang about getting their Charlton back. Chris knew what that meant. But it wouldn’t be Charlton if we didn't pull despair from the midsts of joy and Cash throwing his rattle out of the plan cost him and us! Despite not getting the backing he needed – Chrissy got some backing and we ended up only 3 points from the play offs. At that point it was clear that a modicum of investment and we could really make a charge this season. But Delboy and Rodney couldn’t keep the backing going and Powell lost quality rather than gaining it. Allied to that, a mixture of losing key players to injury, poor refs and a small squad meant that we were at the wrong end of the table, but we were a takeover away from steadying the ship.

We greeted the takeover with positivity, as it was so needed. Little did we expect to find our best two players this season sold and not adequately replaced. Then instead of getting quality replacement, we were fed Liege reserves. The problem is of course – last season’s team would have beaten Liege – like it beat Sporting Lisborn – so if we are going to be a feeder club for them we won’t be a Championship club!
  • Chris Powell, a club legend as a player and a REALLY nice guy has struggled with limited resources but has also confounded us with tactics, team selections and player positions which have contributed to us being in 24th position. OUr form has been in decline before RD took over and if we average our points per game achieved this season we will finish in the final relegation spot, one point below Millwall.
The status quo was not an option. Powell is a nice guy with limited managerial experience and skill and despite the negative effects of Slater et al, has had a pretty unspectacular points haul that leaves us BOTTOM of the table - relegation form tends to relieve managers of their jobs.

Played Points Ave points per game Final points tally
    Birmingham 34 36 1.06 49
    Blackpool 34 35 1.03 46
    Doncaster 34 33 0,97 45
    Millwall 34 31 0,91 42
    _______________________________________
    Yeovil 33 29 0,88 40
    Barnsley 33 29 0,88 40
    Charlton 30 27 0,90 41

Does not look particularly good in that the form under Powell (for a host of reasons and rumours) has been in decline as the season has progressed. We currently have 3 points from last 5 league games so status quo was never an option and absolutely certain relegation form.

Victory over Millwall has never been more important and could we really have had any confidence in Powell achieving this?

Sadly football is about results and any protest I think is clearly misguided given the predicament we are in and that we are BOTTOM of the table.

The problem is, there are too many fickle fans out there....

My other half just reminded me of Cardiff's situation. The directors sacked their manager after he got them promoted and changed their kit.... Fans still attended though!

Exactly. The Cardiff supporters just bent over and let him get away with it and now they've got what they deserved - a farce of a club.

Cardiff have gone through a gradual process of alienating their traditional fan base year on year and replacing them with the happy clappy type who don't have the experience of what Cardiff once were.

Once you supress and push out those that do care and replace them with those who lap up the corporate football model then it's easier to push through your ideas.

Success also helps convert those less trusting and Cardiff managed to get promotion which has obviously helped. Sadly for the Cardiff fans who were going prior to the recent few years, their club will never be the same again but they are just a vocal minority. Don't think they just bent over and took it.
Good post SLL. Sadly your description of what's happened to Cardiff's support sounds painfully familiar.
  • When RD took over the general feeling was to keep an open mind and see how it works out. Chris Powell was never his choice of manager , it was only a matter of time before this happened. If you just go on results over a long period of time any other manager would have gone long ago. The fact is Chris is a Charlton legend and always will be. RD now has his own man in charge , give him a chance. Back the team , something had to change and RD is here wether we like it or not. We will have a good idea of the future by the end of the season , i'm not optimistic but give the new regime a chance at least before protests and boycotts. COYR

    No chance sorry

But how many of those clubs has had to put up with what Powell has? What do some people not get about losing your best players effects results?

And now we're about to do exactly the same (but with League 1 football rather than Premiership football as the reward). RD should be sitting in a theatre of hatred tomorrow evening, but at worst he'll get a couple of half-hearted boos. Our current support would never have got us back to The Valley.

Exactly, twice! Our current fans wouldn't have got us back to the Valley. We'd still be over Selhurst with the usual mob going, "urgh things move on what's the point"!!

It's a shame but a couple of half hearted boos is probably what will happen.

Want to see true fans, look at AFC Wimbledon!! Started from scratch and truly spoke up and followed their club.
  • If you just go on results over a long period of time

He won over 40% of his games in charge
  • I don’t know how we would organise it, as it was spontaneous with Curbs, but I think the 7 or 8 minute sustained standing and hand clapping is a special honour we should reserve for legends. I have no doubt that Chrissy falls into this category whatsoever, so if some got us started on say 85 minutes by singing stand up for Chrissy Powell, and we clap till the final whistle– I think it would be a fitting a moving gesture.

Not sure it is a protest as such, but it will send a message to Chrissy and if anybody else recieves it, all well and good.

Come 85 minutes the ground will be empty. As it happens, it might be empty after 5 minutes, ahem
  • anyone interested in making some form of a protest and if so what idea's do you have

Why didn't you protest about the rubbish football? No goal threat? Being bottom? Why protest now?

The fact you don't know why says it all

  • Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party
  • Ok results this season.

It is not about following the team... I admire you for that by the way....it is about realising that the most enlightened on here are not getting angry because Powell has gone but because it is the latest in a series of moves, that go with Roland's own words, that show that Charlton's future as a competitive, independent club is under serious threat.

  • Like the idea of a boycott, but a far better idea is to throw catalogues on the pitch.
  • In respect to Chris sing his name as we normally would
Cheer on the team as we normally would
Tell RD what we think of his ownership plans so far...."Stand up if you hate Roland" should get the message across without leading to too much disharmony.
  • Let's not make it TOO personal just yet. Perhaps "You can stick yer ****ing network up yer arse" instead?
  • It's obvious now that CP was a deadman walking.
I doubt fan protests would bother Roland Rat. What did he say to the Standard Liege disgruntled fans? My way or buy me out. Nuff said.

  • What is your strategy for securing Charlton as an independent, competitive club? Are you advocating an FC United approach? Any financial backers in mind? Like it or not RD is the only game in town at the moment unless someone can point to someone else willing to lose £7m a year, plus secure the services of some quality players who as yet have appeared remarkably unwilling to join a sinking ship even when their clubs have been willing to release them.
By all means show SCP the recognition and respect he deserves but remember you are a customer not a shareholder.
  • Do you reckon what with Roland being into technology and all that, and what with him having loads of money, that he could CGI a crowd in the stadium? With the right programming they could all adore him and Standard Lieges Reserves and even look good on the telly? Might mean more income for Roland's experiment to be shown on the telly more often, I mean it's the future isn't it?

We should all blow raspberry's at half time.
  • I will continue to support Charlton but not this new bloke. I will not chant for Powell there is no point and tbh I hated the hoof ball but like the man.
  • If the sub-Standard liege players are played tonight then I 100% agree that some sort of protest needs to be made. Cardiff left it too late and look what's happened to them. We cannot allow this Belgian prick to ruin our club
