i can assure you, your match yesterday was brilliant !

Huddersfield agreed a fee for Nahki Wells!

Where do Huddersfield get their money from? They've made some fantastic signings over the last year.
There are officially 15 Teams in this division with a bigger budget than us.

We are shrewd in the transfer market (now Lee Clark has left!).

    £8m for Rhodes
    £2m for Jack Hunt

    £400k for Jonathan Hogg
£600k for Vaughan (rising to 1 million)
£400k for Adam Clayton (our best Player and to quote a Leeds fan, we can have their whole Midfield to have him back)
Tommy Smith & Duane Holmes both development Team products
    £1.3m for Nahki Wells
Adam Hammill - 250k (absolute bargain)
Martin Paterson - free transfer (offered new deal at Burnley)

Rumoured Oliver Norwood to Celtic for over a million to help balance the books, 'fair play and all that (1/5 with bookies to go).
you've got a totally committed local boy chairman (how did he make all that money selling cards and wrapping paper?)
a very good manager and a decent stadium .. but smallish crowds ... I always enjoy my Huddersfield days out .. selling Rhodes for all that cash was a master stroke and has set you up nicely .. as with Cousins (IF he is sold!!) at CAFC, it is always annoying (to say the least) when a star is sold, but in the longer term for medium sized clubs like ours, money shouts not talks and a few million can finance team building as well as paying off a few bills. Look at Crewe. Over the years, the original N W Nursery. Alas, with the influx of foreign players at all levels, Crewe is feeling the pinch through lack of consistent income from selling young players.
Congratulations by the way in signing Wells .. he is a definite good un, possibly better than Rhodes? .. we will see
Thanks for the kind words. Look, we know we are not a big Club and 'know our place' as it were. We don't have the crowds (don't do bad for the size of Town) and will always have to sell our best Players.

Did I want the likes of Rhodes to go or want to see Vaughan leave for Forest or Celtic?, of course not!. The reality is though, these type of transfers will be the catalyst for us to remain competitive at this level, provided we use the money wisely.

Championship football is all I want, no more, no less.

Our Chairman runs a good Club, he is a young Man who made his money selling the Card Factory chain of shops (he started selling cards from the back of a van). Yes he puts a bit of money in, but nothing silly. I would not swap our Chairman for some basket case like Vincent Tan even if it meant Premiership football and boatloads of money. Huddersfield in red and white stripes?, some things cannot or should not ever be sold and I would never set foot in the place again.

Robins also has us playing the best football I have ever seen watching Town, win lose of draw, we are a joy to watch (mind you, yesterday wasn't brilliant!).

Re this Lad Cousins, sounds a hot prospect and like ourselves, if you get the right money and use it wisely, his departure is a no-brainer. It's only the likes of QPR (I am off next week) and Leicester who do not need to sell to the Premiership.

The gap is getting wider money wise but you know what?, 'bring it on' as I enjoy following a Club who is trying to find its way with a mix of shrewd signings and 'home grown' talent. Wouldn't swap our set up to 'buy' success for the world.

Terrific post, agree with the sentiments completely.

As others said on another thread, the Premiership is fun for one or two seasons but then simply becoming fodder for the big boys is simply boring and almost futile.

I would watch our annual home slaughter against Man United in the 2002-2007 years with growing disillusionment, it was like watching Roger Federer versus Annabel Croft.

That's without mentioning the ritual away beatings at the other big boys where their subs bench was worth more than our whole squad - the 4-0 loss at Arsenal in 2007 was particularly abject.

At least in the Championship you have a chance if winning games and having fun rather than having to play boring defensive football in the hope of scraping a win.
  • I know what you mean, OA, and also really appreciated LeedsbasedTownfan's post too, as the Championship is a lot more fun than the Premier League, where getting to 40 points is the be all and end all for clubs our size. But I would watch Charlton win or lose any day of the week, not to mention Annabel Croft.

I'll never forget beating Arsenal at Highbury and The Valley, beating Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool home and away. Man United is the only side we haven't beaten in the PL but our 3-3 draw with them was priceless.

It's more of a laugh in Division 2, but the standard of football and quality of player in the top flight is much higher and makes you proud. All the more so if you've got characters you love like Johnny Robinson rather than players who have come because the money's good.

But it's not a choice between a Vincent Tan type and Div 2. With the right investment a decent manager can get us up, but a defensive midfielder will not attract the kind of fee Jordan Rhodes did. I can only hope we keep our young talent while they're earning points for us week in, week out. We got a mil for Jenkinson and what, 3 for Shelvey? They both played for England last year, which makes a joke of the fees we're getting.
  • Would it be stupid to turn down 5 mill? He's possibly a future England player.

I think we should ask for 6 mil.

Don't get me wrong, we had some great times in the Premier League but the monotony even wore Curbs down in the end, you can't keep performing miracles year after year.

I mean, take Stoke for example, whilst they have stayed up for seven seasons (or however long) they have done it by boring the arse off everyone, I actually read the other day that they are the only team in PL history to score fewer goals than the number of games they have played! They average about 0.94 goals per game - riveting stuff indeed!

Do people really enjoy watching that sort of thing season after season? Surely, the whole point is for it to be entertaining rather than something that has to be endured simply in order that it can be repeated the following year.

Perhaps the most depressing thing of all is that unless your club has an Abrahmovich/Mansour/Fernandes type owner then it doesn't really matter what you do or how well you run the club you will NEVER be able to do what Forest and Leeds did and rise through to win the League and become a major force, its just no longer possible.
  • With regards to JC, i'd ask for more money to ward people off. If someone were to offer stupid money we would be crazy to turn it down and miss an opportunity to bring in at least 2 players with the money made. I really don't want to lose him as i see huge potential in him, but we need strength in our team and getting loans in won't necessarily help as we are getting players that other clubs generally don't want. Unless its someone like this Dom Dwyer who would potentially be coming during their off season and wants games to stay fresh. Just using him as an example of a scenario.

Rumour has it according to Twitter (which i can't post from work) we are close to signing Dom Dwyer on loan.
  • Agreed with the thread - Championship is much more interesting when you feel you can actually win something. You used to turn up in the Premiership and just now that we didn't have a chance, and so the football would be all defensive.

In terms of Cousins, clubs might well pay 5 mil for a player they think can do the business given the home-grown player rule in Europe
  • Yeah let's not get in the Premier League, will go nicely with pulling out of the FA Cup, back in League One winning all those games was miles better. More chance of winning the Tin Pot Cup down there too. As long as we have our hardcore 500 fans at the Valley in the North Lower with the rest of the ground shut that's what counts. Proper Charlton.

Word is on RD that as soon as he reckons the price is right, he sells, no quibbling or haggling. He'll have a price set on any player and if it's met, ka-ching, money in the bank. That said, this was from a Belgian friend but one who does not particularly follow football, much less Liege, so take it with a pinch of salt if you like.
  • But RD surely is bright enough not to sell and greatly increase the risk of relegation?

The time to rebuild teams is in the summer close season, not in January.

Not withstanding that a prolific striker wouldn't come in handy right now!

  • It's all very well saying that we just want to watch nice championship games and end up 12th every season for the next 20 years. The reality is that without ambition we would just gradually slip. And one bad season and it's back to League 1. Winning league 1 was great but pretty dire when we scraped around mid-table. You have to have ambition and try to get up with the elite. Playing in the Premiership was great. Coming down was the tough without Curbs, money and over expectant fans.

Which is what I said, but (and again these are not experts on the running of Liege) he would in this instance sell JC and send over a spare midfielder from Belgium to fill the gap. Now Powell could possibly talk him (RD) into delaying the sale, or sticking out for a loan-back deal, but my friend is pretty adamant that RD would take less money now over more later. Like I said, a lay man opinion second hand, but it's not filled me with confidence personally. I'm hoping he will leave the daily grind in the hands of Richard Murray, who knows a bit about keeping this ship afloat, but obviously the final decision is always going to be Roly Poly's to make.

  • Here's a bit more on a line we brought you earlier, with Leon Clarke - a proven Football League marksman - having handed in a transfer request at League One outfit Coventry. Clarke is reported to be interesting Wolves - the club who helped to launch his career.

Not too bothered, he's the "useless" one we didn't want.

  • £5mil up front and loaned back for the rest of the season a la Zaha deal between Mancs and the nigels - charlton couldn't turn that down and nor should they - it eliminates any injury risk as in if he gets hurt and can't play he's packed off back to merseyside, meanwhile half the money takes the edge off the operating loss and t'other half utilised bringing in replacement plus one - negotiate some sell on clause and in 12 months time when he's moved on to Hull or QPR we get paid again
  • Not a rumour but someone I would personally like us to bring in is Frank Moussa of Coventry.

A winger who has scored plenty of goals this season, is from Belgium and was at Leicester the same time as Chris Powell. Only 24 so can definitely improve.

As said, not a rumour but a player I'd quite like us to sign.

He wouldn't come that cheap though would he? I can't see Roly splashing out a lot of money in January unless we get money in - i.e. selling. At most there will be a few loans in to rejig/refresh the squad and team and maybe one or two signings on the QT - but any extensive/expensive players aren't going to arrive til Summer at least. I'm not even expecting many new contracts any time soon, though the talks will no doubt be opened, just a lack of actual signatures on paperwork.

No not at all, though I don't think he would be dramatically expensive. He isn't a player I expect us to sign, just someone who I feel could bring something to the side whether that's now or the summer. The fact there are clear links between him and Charlton just make it seem better.

Powell said we need to be creative this window, I see at least 2 more coming in before it shuts. Most contracts hopefully sorted by the end of March, there is a lot of work to be done over these coming months, but at least that's some form of excitement/entertainment for us.

Might well be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 but this makes me think we won't be getting the Iranian. RD bought us last week, one player is here, another (the keeper) is about to sign and yet no word of the iranian. Then this other striker immediately signs for the spanish club.
