  • Well, as I have said, I'm open too. I'm just a bit more sceptical than many here about the actual benefits. Of course its a long way down the line too, but I will try and take a leaf out of Henry's book. He has made an excellent checklist against which to evaluate the business plan of any new owners. Something similar can be done with the stay/move issue.

So here's my list of test questions, all suggestions for improvement welcome:

    Staying

What extra seating, executive boxes and entertainment can be built into the Valley?
What is the development cost of such work?
What is the expected extra revenue? - in this League/In the FAPL?
What is the annual running cost?

    Moving

What seating, executive boxes and entertainment is planned?
What is the forecast revenue - in this League/In the FAPL
What is the expected rental and maintenance cost?
What new benefits - such as a Safe Standing area- are offered
What car parking will be available, at what expected cost?

Anyone got anything to add to the questions?

    Good questions.

My major concern would be the design of any new stadium as I would only like to move if it was to a football stadium and not an all purpose with a running track.
  • nobody has come out and said we are moving so why page after page of pant pooing, the thread says takeover rumour, what the hell has that got to do with staying or leaving the valley
  • nobody has come out and said we are moving so why page after page of pant pooing, the thread says takeover rumour, what the hell has that got to do with staying or leaving the valley

    ....because it is fun!
  • this thread is funny, no sign of a takeover close to completion, no idea over if a new owners has intentions of shifting us a mile away.

BTW, If I was to move the club, I'll eye up the Sainsburys site that Ikea want. Would be idea size for a new ground, geographically close to the Valley, and would be close to the Angerstein sports ground which could be described as the clubs first proper home ground.
  • ...because initially it was mooted that property people were taking us over.

  • In March I mentioned that someone was looking to broker a deal to move us from the Valley. At the time the Macros site was being mooted. I haven't been told anything further re a site, but the middle man involved before is back on the scene. 2+2 = 7, coincidence? Who knows.
  • Nearly 880 posts on a hunch.

I wouldn't be surprised if we moved in the next 5/10 years, if the Valley can't be extended or refreshed to provide the a better experience and more revenue, then cool, I'm fine with it. But until, spend a couple of million on the Valley and freshen it up

I doubt we will get any of those answered, maybe I am being cycnical and even less likely to get answers that I would like on bottom line returns and the ROI timeframes. Arsenal have been relatively crippled by the length of time they have been investing in bricks and mortar over playing staff.
  • Very much 'relatively' with their Champions League football every year!

  • I think this has been a really positive and informative thread with people seizing the chance to examine all the arguments in a constructive way (and with the usual cracking CL humour too).

I, for one, feel much better informed than I was and a lot clearer about what I think.

And if it all comes to nothing in the next few days / weeks it was well worth rehearsing the arguments anyway, because it seems inevitable that we are going to need to be clued up about them at some time in the future.

  • If you can create something inspirational for the future; it's easy to let go of the past...

Unless I'm mistaken aren't we currently owned and formerly backed by people who had made their fortune in property?

I've assumed we will be tenants because Greenwich want a multi-use stadium, but I am far from sure about this. So I've adapted the questions above to acknowledge this point

  • Who said we were moving then Prague
  • If the club, or the owners, actually own the ground then it could be beneficial. They could also maximize match day income via a monopoly on fast food and beer sales (would have to improve their service first). If the ground is leased I would just fear us becoming another Coventry.

Definitely more against a move than for it, but think that we can all be convinced otherwise if it is done properly.
  • If a takeover doesn't happen, and soon, then moving will be the very least of our worries IMO.

Let's get that very tricky hurdle out of the way first eh.
  • Who said we were moving then Prague

Not me, mate, nor anybody I have spoken to. I was told on Thursday that the whole Pen discussion is a red herring. But other people with some inside info have said otherwise including one you know well...

I don't think there is any harm in discussing it, not least because I have been surprised to learn how many people just accept it as both inevitable, and bringing inevitable success.

Who will own the new ground if we move given the FFP conditions excellently articulated by Seriously_red and others?

  • I understand the arguments why the Club needs to move to the Peninsula, it's a great location as is it better for transport links and will have much more space around. The Stadium can also be used for other sport games but when you have the Olympic Stadium near by, why would you want to use another Stadium 10 miles away?

The most important argument against the move was the fact it was only 20+ years ago we battled to get back to the Valley as it just our home, we would take that perfect achievement away that no other club has ever done. We don't have a big fanbase to fill a 40,000 Stadium unless we attract a billionaire that will make us the new Man City but we would be attracting the Glory Hunters which we do not want. If that does not happen I bet we will be a club like Bolton or Middlesborough when they did not even fill their new Stadiums the majority of the time when they were in the Premier League. The atmosphere would be dead.

I do feel we need to move with the times but for all the right reasons, if this move happens and it fails it will be very costly to the Club and their will not be a turning back ethier.
  • To me ownership of the ground is the single biggest factor, without it the future of the whole club is incredibly vulnerable, much more so then it is now. You only have to look at the lessons learnt from Coventry especially in terms of no revenue from anything other then a percentage of the gate, plus huge hike in prices for parking, and all the other match day expenses.
  • I can talk sense sometimes if I put my mind to it, and post before 12 pints, I am still old skool in heart, but mind is saying the current situation is unsustainable.

    Onwards and upwards, hopefully.

Not that I am convinced any takeover will happen, it is just that if it does I think we may have to open our minds to the future possibilities, the current realities and not try and hold onto a sepia tinged past that is long gone.

Would hate my kids to support arsenal, man utd etc. For the next generation I want us to be open to change rather than be non existent or irrelevant.

That would hurt more than a move of less than a mile away.

It's 1.8 miles on foot from The Valley to Morden Wharf Road on the peninsula. Not wishing to be pedantic, but it does make a difference if you are walking!
still pedantic, cant believe it is that far, but as you are my councillor I will let it go.
  • To pay rent on a ground you need to be successful and maintain success or things fall over fairly quickly.
If you own your own ground you have an asset upon which you can raise revenue and capital in good times and bad. It is the people who own the equity who get diluted or even burnt as the club restructure ready for another climb up the greasy pole.
Right now we need owners who are willing and able to fund development of the club especially at the academy level which will pay dividends in the first team fairly quickly judging by the last year. They also need to be able to fund the missing parts of the jigsaw so that CAFC can climb the table - raises the revenues, hopes of potential promotion and the asking price of the club... win:win?

  • PENINSULA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that is the correct spelling, just assumed it is the correct name of the site, I stand corrected if it is not, just following others.
  • i believe that any takeover would mean a move, this is based on the lack of answer from RBG, the sales brochure from cafc and the plans pasted on here

not any inside info just a personal belief with the 3 pieces on here, also the fact that RM and PV both have mooted it in the past
  • I've got a nice seat on the half way line about a third of the way back. Great view. And a nice bunch of people sitting around me.

I'm staying put and refusing to move.
