Only at Charlton is failure rewarded so handsomely. Parkinson was given the job after a trial period in which he failed to win a single game; apparently Powell is to be endorsed after winning only five of 28 games this miserable season. Duchatelet has admitted he got things wrong by alienating the fans at Liege, but this looks like inaction to me. If we are relegated with Powell as manager, Duchatelet will have been negligent in not giving a new man a dozen games to keep us up.

Where was we before we had Powell? In league one with no hope. Look what Powell has achieved with hardly anything all he needs is a bit of backing from Roland and our support. I'd rather stick with Powell than have another dowie, parky or reed.

Only at Charlton could Chris Powell be regarded as a "failure".

What about games in the past 4 months that have been played midweek and raining throughout?

On what planet is Powell a failure?

When appointed he was charged with "getting us promoted with a team that could hold it's own in the Championship"

    He achieved this last year.

He then had no further investment, a squad of players out of contract and a pudding for a pitch. And ownership uncertainty (how many failed takeovers??)

Give him a contract for 18 months - reward his achievements to get us to this point. The boost would lead to a buoyant crowd at the weekend, maybe a couple of decent results and turn the season around.
If Roland still isn't happy in the summer he can get his own man in but for the sake of a few hundred thousand pounds of possible payout in the summer (which would be cheaper than a relegation) it makes sense to do it now.

I'd like to hear it from a couple more sources first but promising news indeed!
How about today's Daily Mirror "Avram Grant on standby to return to management at Charlton as new owner R.D. worries about relegation". Thoughts anyone? Or maybe a new thread?
Have you seen that in today's Mirror?

I haven't seen a copy but the only source I can find for that quote is this football news roundup site (which also contains the Telegraph tweet about a new contract for CP):

    http://www.teamtalk.com/papertalk/9174707/Paper-Talk-United-to-enter-Kroos-control

The quote is not on the Mirrors football web page:

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/

Football Spy page 65 but nothing in the Guardian unless it is in the Flemish edition.

Who better to stear us clear of relegation than a manager who got Portsmouth and West Ham relegated? He's definitely a better bet than our a current manager who has never been relegated.

Maybe Avram Grant appointed as Director of Football?
    Personally I would prefer Curbs

I never get the Avram Grant thing, his record is awful, and its widely accepted that at Chelsea he was ignored by Lampard and Terry who managed the team on his behalf

It was more with reference to the spelling of the word Fanny!
  • Hmmm getting a little worried by today's events. Referred to as a 'coach' by RD and talks are ongoing. Now he has cancelled his appearance this evening. Surely negotiations wouldn't be so important right here right now if everything was going to end well?
What was Powell's demeanour like in the press conference?

  • Maybe he's cancelled tonight to carry-on negotiating his contract or meet with his agent.

As if you've included Piotr who he's just signed and has played 5 minutes in a discussion about how he's done in the Championship over the last 2 seasons. It's 400k for Wilson and that's it.

Coach means manager in continental Europe. I've no doubt that's what RD means.

Some talk that Powell contract renewal is for less than what he is on now. Wouldn't surprise me if this was true.

I thought Powell was on quite a low wage compared to other managers though?

Compared to other managers in the Championship, id imagine so definitely.

    He's a 'coach' now though.

RD likes everything on the cheap

So will he be slashing season tickets next year then?

To be fair you normally get what you pay for so if we are relegated I for one would want a cheaper seat to watch a lower standard of football.

  • The term coach is widely used on the continent. I'm certain that using that term instead manager is nothing to worry about. However in actuality. If CP isn't selecting the incoming players then "coach" is exactly what he is.

Roland said in his press conference that he is not spending lots of money just to win so he has the right manager in CP so not surprised he is offering him a new contract

Trouble is tactics and coaching is not CPs strong point. If he is not allowed to pick players who he knows have the right spirit and character then that is taking away one of his strengths. CP is a great man but I doubt that this current situation is going to do him or Charlton any favours.
