timing is weird to say the least. Why not give CP a contract till the end of the season from Day 1 ? why not sack him pre the Jan clear out ? why leave it till we are shopping at Primart to make the offer. It looks like its just the news conference bollox.

Our club needs this to happen. Tbh even if they sack him at the end of the season anyway can't underestimate the negative effect letting the gaffers contract run down will have on the pitch.

Has to be done and hope they don't just do it to solve the problem above but because they want to give him the chance he hasn't had to build in the champ
  • Some folks we know are going to be going apoplectic at this news. If confirmed I fear for the internet as one man in particular implodes.

Is that a BIG man you have in mind, AUN ?

I couldn't possibly name names Fanny but in a parallel Charlton universe somewhere............

    Ah yes.

Somewhere a torch would be useful....

  • Luzons contract at Liege is up at the end of the season... Maybe a swap deal will be announced?

ITTV must be in meltdown over this...............

I'm still waiting for jiminez and powell to agree that severance package talked about around 12 months ago. But this news comes at quite a hilarious time just after reams has said powell is gone this week and in the summer it will be "all change".

God I hope this happens. Not just because I think Powell is an excellent manager with potential but because it shows a strong support for keeping Charlton as Charlton. You won't find a man more in tune with the club's mentality than Chris and it would show that Roland doesn't want to turn Charlton into a miserable talent farm but that he has at least a reasonable understanding of what Charlton means. Can't ask for much more from the owner

I wouldn't be surprised if a contract extension was announced along with some kind of Director of football type role announcement....pure speculation btw.

I think this is a good move. I think RD has put faith in CP because he sees what Chris achieved in L1 and last year and he also knows the instability that has been around this year. Added to this he recognises the high esteem that Chris is held by the Charlton fans and he has learned from what he did when he first went to SL.

I'm not surprised by this as I feel Chris would have been gone by now if that was RD's plan.

    Great news if it happens....
  • If it is true, let's hope it is proven to be the right decision and he keeps us up. Otherwise we could all look a bit silly. Without doubt it would mean everyone rallying for the last few months to give us a fighting chance.

Says in the daily mirror "Avram Grant is on standby to return to management at Charlton as new owner Roland Duchatelat worries about relegation" hopefully nothing init.
  • Hope it's true for the right reasons and not to get the fans onside as s/t renewals approach.
  • What time is the press conference

It seems to me that opinions are divided over whether CP should be given a new contract, I personally have been critical in some areas. Having said that, I am determined that if Chris is given a new contract I will support him fully. It is essential that when the dust settles, whatever the outcome, we all need to go forward with all the passion that we have for this Club.

I agree, to me making a decision either way re: Powell's status is/was much preferable to the constant swings and roundabouts of rumour/counter-rumour and confusion. Either Powell gets a contract that keeps him here for a while, or RD says straight up that come the end of the season, that's it, time's up. Then at least we will finally know where we stand - even if we don't like it!

Could be done before this afternoon's press conference. Not definite. But is a possibility. #cafc
  • Sounds like it is quite well advanced and may back up the rumors from a few weeks back that CP had agreed a new contract in principle.
  • After thinking about this Contracy RD could be thinking this two ways

    (1) As per the Interview (in the Guardian I think) he admitted he made mistakes at Liege (in terms of sacking a popular Manager) and has learnt from them... i.e. KM has reported back to him saying how much the fans sing his name etc... so they dont want another repeat of Liege happening again

    (2) He's extremely clever and thinks that by giving Powell a new Contract it'll galvinise the players into performing and staying up... If that doesnt happen then Powell could still be sacked in the summer (i.e. there could be a clause which allows him to do that) either way the man is worth over $400m so compensation wont be an issue for him
  • Will be a performance based contract i imagine.
  • I'd give Powell a 5 year contract or even more. I'd rather stick with someone with passion and love for the club than a foreigner who knows nothing about us and the club. Relegation or not Powell can lead this club to where it should be with the right backing.

    He'd owe them money ATM

  • A new contract will makes things seem more secure. It may help bring loans to the club and the perceived stability may improve performance on the pitch. I would expect there to be clauses which enable a parting of the ways in summer / before on terms not dissimilar to those which would be the case under the current contract.

Whether a new contract is signed or not, the reality of the situation is that an improvement of results is needed and soon. Failure to improve on results will possibly result in the termination of CP's contract (new / old). A repeat of the Doncaster performance may bring matters to a head.
