What does Hamer need to do to get dropped?

  • How does it go again

    He's Charltons number 1
He drops them in for fun
  • Had my doubts about Hamer last season when he flapped a lot and was beaten from long range. He had a very good defence in front of him so his flaps weren't punished as much as have been this season.

First half of the season he seemed to really improved but the dropped/missed crosses have crept back into his game recently.

Don't agree about him being one of the best keepers in this division but he is still well in credit from this term's displays IMHO.

The knee jerk "drop/sack" brigade do make me laugh though.
  • I think Hamer has been very good this season overall however the last few games he has made too many mistakes. If it was an outfield player making this many mistakes I would have expected to see him dropped. If Powell did decided to drop Hamer then I would totally understand his decision.
  • Think Hamer is 'alright' with the potential to be very good. His distribution is certainly above most keepers.

If another cock-up follows fairly soon then i'd expect to see Button giving a go, particularly if we get a couple more victories behind us.

Back-up keepers are pretty much ten a penny due to their limited usage. The fact we clearly had such a tight budget during the summer yet allocated some of it to a back-up keeper when you could easily get one for free, I struggle to understand.
  • I think Hamer is a decent, young(ish) keeper but I don't appear to have the rose tinted view of some on here who seem to think he is the second coming of Gordon Banks. He has made some decent saves and has made some howlers and I remain unconvinced at his ability to deal with crosses. There also seems to be a communication issue at times when defenders clearly expect him to claim a ball and then have to make a hurried last second clearance themselves when he fails to do so.

I also have to laugh at the "he's saved us more points than he's cost us" brigade. Does anyone really think a keeper who didn't do that would still have a job?
  • I say we drop @Splodge, he's dropped a clanger here with this nonsense!
  • Dropped? Been one of the better performers all season.
  • Im agreed on the it is his job to save shots, does mean we can no longer praise any player for anything, as it is just them doing their job, for starters we failed to score in the last game so Yann/Fuller/Haynes/BWP all need to be dropped.

I totally agree with everything said here. The only thing I would add is that I find the 'he's one our of best players' also laughable. He's not great, he's not shit, he's better than he was, he lacks consistency.

And I still believe we would have been better off trying to keep Robbie or Randolph.

  • Lest we forget, in more recent times Hamer has been behind a defence that looks seriously wobbly, Morro is not living up to last season's standards, Cort's made some obvious and costly errors, and the number of crosses/balls into the box in the last 15-20 minutes we've been allowing, Doctor Octopus couldn't catch them all. Like all goalkeepers he could save a dozen shots but it's the one he doesn't that costs us. The mistake on Saturday was his and his alone, but to be honest he is not the (only) one fingers should be pointing at here.
  • I certainly don't think Hamer is the problem. We are not scoring goals and these win you games (funny that). Our defence hasn't been too bad, but there is only so many times you can allow an opposing team to attack you before they score. We need to keep the ball in their half and make them defend rather than playing the counter.

I don't think Hamer warrants being dropped for form. For a rest maybe, but certainly not because of form. He has pulled of some cracking saves of late.
  • According to Sky we had 2 shots on target against Hull. That seems to say the problem is not so much at the back.
  • decent post madz teams are going to create chances and score against us ,but the defence and hamer have in the main been pretty solid and no one has gave us a pasting. but if we dont start hitting the back of the net we will be in trouble.
  • He has a brilliant knack of winding opposition fans up, which I personally think is great. Everyone was creaming themselves over Yann's sit and sulk moment the other week against Birmingham, but Ben Hamer is as passionate as anybody in the side, Yann included.
  • It seems the handling problems with crosses come and go. It's not like every cross that comes in is not dealt with, maybe a confidence issue?

Button hasn't had any significant game-time which could mean errors if just thrown in for one game, i'd stick with Hamer. Clearly he's a good enough shot stopper to merit his place.

I'd be more worried about a defence and midfield which seem shaky defensively.

I wasn't Tom, I was long gone down the stairs to see Yann have 'his moment'. :-0

  • He does make a few mistakes but because he's the keeper they're more noticeable. He makes far, far fewer mistakes than any other player. In Hamer we trust.

made more blinders than blunders whenever I have seen him. Keepers' mistakes always look far worse than other players' .. except for missing open goals

What key shall we sing in, MIA ?

  • Hamer is a decent keeper despite his unfounded attack on Paddy Powell.
  • Sorry, I couldn't find the "well done Ben Hamer" thread, for a very good performance last night.

    Well done Ben :-)

Booo, don't derail the thread or we'll need a new scapegoat! (I'm nominating Fuller, for no real reason.)

Not really unfounded, was it, the pitch is shit.
  • And he didn't really attack Paddy, he said (rightly or wrongly) the pitch is costing the team, and however true that is, it does look pretty dire. Paddy's been ill and I am sure he will be very frustrated at the state of the pitch, but I can see why Hamer was frustrated.

Haha sorry Fanny , i should have replied sooner , i only had 30 minutes free wifi in the hotel and missed this thread , but yes i did belt it out.

  • Not quite sure why i previously posted Ben Hamsr above , i'm sure he had 2 hands last time i saw him , contrary to Charlton fans thinking. :-0
  • I don't think hamer should be dropped... but David Button should get a few games before the end of the season (maybe peterborough, bristol, or teams that aren't scoring many)
will show that he has a place in the team, gives him first team experience for us and the opportunity to see what level he is at.

Button made few good saves against huddesfield in the cup and its a shame we played badly in that game and went out

I know what you are getting at .. BUT not being too picky I hope, The Posh scored 5 last night .... alright only against the PussieCats ... even so !!!
  • You never drop players from your best team until the job is done. Arsenal learned that the hard way against Blackburn.

As long as there is work to be done, Hamer stays. It's down to Button to a earn a place, not just had games handed to him to make him feel better
