It clearly states "we" the club offered Evina a contract to the terms he wanted "they" his agents changed what they wanted again. Evina is well within his rights to turn down ANY contract but it was disappointing for Powell as it should've been sorted out a while ago but for whatever reason (club/agent) it didn't happen and this offer was what the agents wanted originally. Now they've moved the goalposts and the club won't play ball.

Christ, I can't believe I've gotta teach some of you to read.

    Well said.

Nothing overly cryptic about what Powell stated at all, but the usual suspects just love to try and find ways to bring up weird conspiracy chat as usual.
Or you could just be wrong ?

Or you could just be reading way too much into what was actually said?
Isn't that the whole point though. I'm not sure what exactly was said and I'm not alone.

    Im with you SHG

"We got very close last week" I would interpret that as club got near to what Evina / his agents wanted...emphasis on word 'Close"
after that the term "they" could apply to either party club or agent
CP coming out and saying "Evina is well within his rights to turn it down" and follow it with how much he wants Evina at the club... says to me maybe club didn't offer what Evina wanted!

It's just an opinion KA, no conspiracy theory, no panic stations, club is going broke, we're all doomed!! just an opinion
Perhaps, quite simply the club board are being prudent and making CP's life extra hard trying to build the team he wants, whatever, it is CP is the man for the job

  • Nothing cryptic there for me either, tom. But the response by KA was à bit disrespectful. No need to write things in such an aggressive manner.

SHG may have a different view but he isn't an idiot.

    No. I actually am.

Christ, I can't believe I've gotta teach some of you to read.

lost me a bit KA, where does it clearly state " we offered Evina a contract to the terms he wanted"

All I can see is - cut and pasted from OS statement : “We got very close last week and right at the last minute they changed it again. Ceddy is well within his rights to turn it down and his Dubai-based agent has advised him not to sign.” and to me there is a lot of careful wording and ambiguity in that official statement

lets break it down for even you to understand.

"We got very close last week" - the club ("we" being the word Chris is assigning to the club) got very close to coming to a middle ground for both parties

"at the last minute they changed it again" - at the last moment before signing "They" Evina's agents said "actually that's not what we want, we want more"

"Ceddy is well within his rights to turn it down" - he's well within his rights to turn down the contract offer that we have given him, just like he is well within his rights to turn down any contract from anyone.

"his dubai based agent has advised him not to sign" - Evina wants to stay, but his agents basically think they can get a better deal from the club, or another club.

I would hope Chris is spending his time thinking about pre season, formations, future opponents, tactics, potential signings, his kids, his missus and making sure his clothes are washed rather than putting together a very cleverly worded statement for the ever vigilant tens of thousands of fans that frequent the valley every other week that must surely post on Charlton Life to decode.

Of course i could be wrong and 9/11 was an inside job and the illumanati are bringing in a new world order because of a lyric in a reversed led zeppelin track.

    Ok ;0)

  • Turn it in chaps.

I may be wrong, but everything put out by the club is scrutinised before publication. Either this should have been made clearer at the edit, or it has been deliberately been left ambiguous

    It's the latter.

Carry on up the Ceddy this is becoming.

Also at the rate of signings currently we'll be playing the 3-2-1 formation this coming season!

The first time I read it I thought THEY referred to Ceddy's team and still do now. The turning down of the offer in the statement appears after THEY changed it but the statement doesn't proclaim it's a timeline, it could be referring to the original offer.
  • I don't think he is much of a loss based on what I saw last season. Wiggins is far superior without being a superstar himself. He wasn't sound at defending and below average coming forward so happy for him to go if he and his agent think he is too good for Charlton. We are bigger than any player.
  • I thought first of all it meant Charlton changed it at the last minute, but now I think it's as simple as his agent changed it, Cedric wanted to sign but was advised not to (by the 'Dubai-based agent), unless their brand new terms were met.

As AFKA said, no website/press statement would EVER go out with veiled digs at the board etc. If it was I would be very worried all round.

Is that an opinion or something you have heard ?

  • I read it as we came close to agreeing terms but then they (ceddy and his agent) changed what they wanted and therefore he turned the offerdown, which he is allowed to do. Powell believes his Dubai based agent has basically told him to hold out for more, but he really wants him to stay and asked him to come to Spain. Again ceddys agent said don't go so as negotiations continue he is training with the under 21's
  • 70 odd posts on whom "they" refers to. Only on CL!

Who really cares, he hasn't signed because one of the parties changed their mind for a reason we don't know.
  • Wouldn't be the first time 'they' ie TJ et al changed their offer at the last minute. Think you can ask Mark Gower for one about that.
  • Isn't TJ in court with the not so Wise one about changing the details of a deal
  • That wernt a they changed their mind large as they implies more than one

It was a singular person who changed his mind

  • 'They' means CE and his agent - it's crystal clear for Christ's sake!
  • Maybe it's over analysis like this that leads to concern over communicating too often ;)

It is definitely not 100% clear what Powell is saying, the way it's written can lead to interpretations either way. Its most probably just an accident in editing.
  • It's clear to me.

Powell wants him to stay, Charlton offered him a deal, Evina would've been happy to sign but his agent changed his mind and advised him not to sign.

It's clear to you. Enough for you to put your mortgage on it ?

  • The article is intended to refute what the agent came out with to sky sports. Considering that and the fact that he is referred to as 'Dubai-based' I'm pretty certain Powell is criticising the agent.
  • People will read the statement on how they view the club. Some will blame the player some will blame the board. In the end if he signs or doesn't sign so be it.
Not the end of the world either way
  • Absolutely hilarious thread. There's always been misprints and ambiguities on the OS - however in this case it is a quote. It's clear what was meant, is you want to have a ridiculous fantasy and believe that Powell was negotiating in good faith when Slater rushed in and tried to remove Ceddy's trousers before running out rippping up the contract, have at it. Clear from Powell's tone that he's not happy with the player's representation and failure to report. Suspect that Mr Powell is not one to be messed about, he's someone that puts great stock in his word. If Evina agreed to go on the tour and then didn't show then his time at the club is rightly done. Regardless of how fair or unfair he thinks the offer is. We'll have wasted money on flights and accomodation for him and perhaps another young player didn't get to travel to make a space for him.
  • ha ha KA ...."for even you to understand" ...getting a bit patronising aren't you?
If Cedy signs or not is between him and the club and as these matters are so often played out in the public domain - for obvious reasons - and this is a fans forum, for fans views, therefore the posters have a right to express their views and you have a right to disagree and voice your OWN opinion, which could POSSIBLY be right or Possibly be WRONG. you are quite entitled to disagree with my opinion, however, reign it in and don't get personal... 'for even you to understand'

Quite so: a wasted opportunity for one of the youngsters. I'm a bit surprised Powell is ostensibly being so kind towards Ceddy; his no-show at the airport is downright selfish and shabby.

  • Ridiculous of Evina not to turn up for the trip, without even making a courtesy call to the manager. Leaving aside what has gone on in the negotiations ( which we simply don't know ), this marks him out as a foolish young man. He and his agent need to be very careful not to overplay their hand.
