Club Statement on Millwall Reports - from the Official Site

No formal complaint to be made to policeMatt Wright reports

Following reports of the racial abuse of Charlton players during Saturday’s match against Millwall, and subsequent consultation between the club officials, the police and players concerned, it has been decided that no formal complaint will be made to the police. Charlton are satisfied that Millwall are taking the issue of racism by supporters very seriously.

..............as someone who had the dis-pleasure of sitting with a bunch of racist, Millwall thugs in the Barry Kitchener Stand on Saturday, where the stewards/officials did less than nothing about monkey chanting for 90 minutes, the suggestion that 'Millwall are taking the issue of racism by supporters very seriously' is nothing more than laughable. Are we back in the 1980's?

  • There's nothing stopping you making a formal complaint to the police.

This, instead of coming on here and moaning about it make a complaint.
  • Against who? Call me a coward but a 46 year old Charlton supporting fan is not going to tackle Millwall racists in their own end. Maybe I should have but I didn't. The point of my post was to challenge the assertion that Millwall take racism seriously. Makes me laugh really as anyone lighting a cigarette would have been pounced upon as a social deviant. Sickening.
  • Ring up the Police and make a complaint.
  • After the Chelsea hoo haa, I can see why the club would be nervous about jumping on any bandwagon without hard, concrete evidence.

If you make a complaint the police will investagate it by looking at CCTV footage, speaking to stewards.
  • Sorry, I thought I was entitled to express my opinion on here for what I thought was an interesting topic for us given it's on our website and affects us! Sorry about that!
  • Carefully worded statement.

I'm not clear if they mean that MFC take racism in general seriously or they are taken these particular incidents seriously.

My fear is that by not complaining to the police formally this will be read by some as meaning the reports from Haynes and Frimpong were false or that they "played the race card"(sic).

Would be good to hear from Millwall FC on this.
  • WSS-agreed but my point is that the Millwall Stewards heard it/had the evidence and chose not to act. It's their responsibility in that situation as an official officer of that football club to deal with the situation.
  • Henry - my experience was that BWP got the worst abuse of the 3 black Charlton players warmimg up. The irony was that two of their subs were black too!

  • Totally agree.
  • I think Millwall take every accusation of rascism seriously and would be very surprised if they didn't. If the players felt that strongly about it they could report it to the police but they must not as they are prepared to leave it.

Mildrew 66 if you are that bothered report it, problem with these sort of threads are it just stirs up more problems with which is already a very heated derby.
  • On BBC Site........

    1411:
    FOOTBALL
Charlton's Danny Haynes and Emmanuel Frimpong have decided not to make an official complaint about the racial abuse they claimed to have suffered at Millwall on Saturday.

Both Addicks players took to Twitter to claim they were abused by Millwall supporters following the goalless draw at The Den.
  • What was actually said then Meldrew.

Please do it. The reason racism thrives is because people keep their heads down and do nothing about it.
  • I don't think the ordinary stewards are there to deal with this sort of stuff in the first instance.
There is a difference between the ones who are basically showing you where you sit and those who deal with asb. Why someone on, probably, very low money should be expected to front up to people doing this is a mystery to me. I suspect they are to report it to the 'special' stewards who then deal with it, or not.
  • Both the Stewards and Police ignored most of what was going on in home stand behind the dugouts. I suspect any official complaint would have gone nowhere and would have left us looking Chelsea-esque in the long run.
  • We don't know what Millwall are doing behind the scenes and as a club they do take racism seriously. The problem is that the stewards going in may cause more trouble as it all kicks off, there are only a few stewards to the number of fans look at the recent incident of Kirkland being punched by a fan who was then protected by other fans.

Not quite the same league as racism but a couple of years ago in the West Upper away fans were in the hospitality seats (I think Gillingham), when they scored these fans were over celebrating and complaints were made to the stewards who had been told by the security room not to take any action, even when it happened again and Upper West fans were foaming at the mouth with rage .

  • Look, i think we all know that Millwall Football Club is regulated by slightly different rules - it is indeed the filter that allows the rest of the football world to enjoy their saturday afternoons. It's a lot easier to have them all go there than to dish out asbos, bans and prison sentences. It's like an asylum. The experimental camomile medication in the drinks has clearly muted their stand behind the goal so once they start administering in their other two stands, it's job done.
  • meldrew66.......Perhaps they (the players) have been advised to stay quiet, no doubt there was some sort of abuse going on but maybe it shouldnt be footballers making a case. This is just an official line IMHO and maybe it has been dealt with quietly by those concerned.

  • Millwall have already released a statement, can't get it as I'm at work .. Something along the lines of ' we hoped players would go down the right channels before going to social media'
  • Following allegations of racial abuse made by two Charlton players via Twitter after Saturday’s south London derby at The Den, Millwall have been in consultation with Charlton Athletic and the police in regard to this matter.
The players concerned have made it clear that they do not wish to make a formal complaint to police, and in the absence of any corroborative evidence of racism we consider this matter closed.
Whilst, as a club, we are disappointed that once again players have sought to make assertions via social media networks rather than draw any concerns to our attention through the appropriate channels immediately, we are grateful to Charlton for their co-operation in dealing with this matter.
We are committed to continuing to work alongside organisations including Kick-It-Out and Show Racism the Red Card towards the eradication of racism in all its forms from football. This commitment has the full support of the vast majority of Millwall supporters.
In this regard, it is clearly necessary to re-state that there are codes of practice agreed by the FA, the Football League, the PFA and all clubs in respect to the proper procedures to be followed by any player who feels he is being subjected to unacceptable levels of abuse within a football ground.
These involve bringing the matter to the attention of the home club immediately, if necessary via a member of his own club staff or the fourth official, in order that action can be taken instantly.
It is in everyone’s interest to weed out individuals who may still wish to vent racist views within football grounds, but all concerned need to take their share of responsibility to ensure that this happens.
  • No need for the dig at Haynes and Frimpong.

Would like to know our club's thinking behind this one.

If the players were racially abused then a complaint should have been made. Even if it was not possible (following the complaint) to take further action in this instance, it could potentially assist if abuse reoccurs in the future.

Alternatively, if the players could not be certain that they were racially abused, why did they say they were.

Thare you go Meldrew. That's why you should've reported it.

The stewards did nothing at the time; Millwall will do nothing - their statement appears to place responsibility on our players for having the temerity to speak their version of the truth. You have a calculation to make as someone who has witnessed this event (which might be classed as a criminal offence) and a choice to make as to what course of action to take. It's a tough one and what I or anyone else on this board might do is not the point...

Perhaps you "re tweet" and add your views, perhaps you go down some channel with CAFC or the authorities, or as you have already done, bring it up on here.

  • As I guessed MFC now implying that DH and EF were in the wrong.

MFC are taking no action or putting any measures in place for their next home game but they say they take racism "seriously"?

Same old millwall. Always the victims, its never their fault.
  • That club really is something else.
  • we are disappointed that once again players have sought to make assertions via social media networks rather than draw any concerns to our attention through the appropriate channels
    ......

Are they more disappointed about this than the fact of the abuse itself do you think? Perhaps they should be a bit more proactive about something they know is a problem instead of waiting for complaints through the correct channels.

Appreciate they have a tough job down there, but they just look stupid moaning about the abused players.
  • One of my friends used to be a steward at Milwall and said this kind of thing happens pretty regularly BUT your 'normal' stewards are advised against taking direct action as odds are some neanderthal thug and his mates are likely to use it as an excuse to attack them. Official procedure is to note seat numbers etc and report it after the game. Whether or not this happened or was swept under the carpet I cant say.
