For me the point is not that man city and chelsea have bought league titles its the fact they had to spend so excessively to even challenge for the title. The knock on effect goes all the way down the football league pyramid. As for the comparison with the previous monopoly of man u, liverpool et al, two wrongs don't make a right. The old system didn't work but the new one is even worse. A club spending within their financial limits would most likely face relegation from the top two divisions. Over all though I'm most amazed by the stupidity of owners (especially those in the top division) in creating such a set up.
For goodness sake, stop all this 'Who's it going to be/ How much will we have to spend' conjecture. Do something positive; Join the CA Supporters' Trust for £5 and get ready for action in the new year.
Bolderhumphrey etc raised a good question I thought.
Winding neck back in also.
Thing is there are so many ways for information to get out of a football club. Going right back to 1989, we got hold of the fact Charlton had decided to go back to The Valley from the 16-year-old (I think) son of Mike Norris's financial adviser. Add into the mix that there are plenty of people still at Charlton with no loyalty to or affection for the current owners and it's not surprising there are wholesale leaks.

Never understood the stance of not wanting to be like Man City.
As a fan of Charlton, i want them to win. I want them draped in glory. I want them playing in Europe. I want them playing at Wembley. I want them to contain top class internationals. I want them to be the best team in the world.
I want to see all that in my lifetime no matter how it happens. Dont understand why people would wanna live their life supporting a team and not wanting them to get to the top.
My take on Reams of Verse is that he is definitely getting interesting info, but then overreaches himself. He claims that it was always the deal that Cash would invest in the Jan window if we were top half. Well, such a specific plan would be news to Richard Murray at least, and it would be kind of surprising if this bloke knew more about Cash' s intentions than RM does

To a point, yes, but if the post success consequences will be dire then I don't want it e.g. how many Portsmouth fans would trade their FA Cup win for a mid table Championship position and financial stability now? - I suspect a significant majority.

Agreed it's not the success I'm afraid of it's what happens afterwards because I want cafc to still be around long after I'm dead.

Which is where Pompey went wrong.
All the spending was on players but very little on long term infrastructure.
Fratton Park was never developed significantly and the new ground not built.
New or expanded grounds can be a problem (See Coventry who don't own the Ricoh) but along the coast Southampton also went in Admin but had a new ground with much bigger potential for match and non-match income generation plus a very good academy. Pompey have neither.
City are invested in infrastructure and also have a large supporter base so even without the Arab money they could still sustain success (if not to the same level)

Exactly, nothing wrong with having a mega rich owner, if they don't rip out the soul of the club which most don't and if they spend as much on the infrastructure of the club as playing staff, which clubs like Man City & PSG in the french league are.
I personally want to see the days of Charlton having world class players coming out at the Valley again and not just as opponents in the FA Cup but in the shirt of this great club we all love.

I know it's coming up for Xmas, but Santa's going to think youre just a greedy sod...I went for Viagra...much more attainable.
Yes just the £98m loss for last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So yes there well on target for there long term plan of financial stability as an established "big" club, just a shame they have to spend so much in the short term due to people allowing there neighbours among other clubs to "cheat" many years ago.
Not sure what all the fuss is about. The bigger the club the more they are able to spend. Man City are able to afford to spend huge even obscene amounts because their owners can and want to. They are not being irresponsible and spending what they don't have so not IMHO cheating. If as this thread suggests Charlton get new investment then no doubt we will spend not more or not less than any investors want. As long as they can afford to spend their money and not put the club into financial jeopardy then I'm very happy with that.

I seriously doubt Powell knows what's going on so how would a relative of a former assistant manager know?!
I'm appalled by this idea, that exactly what we've got is all we can ever aspire to... Such stagnation... There's no purity in poverty.
